  • While doing some research of the person who gave that TED talk (Clay Shirky - you can access his Wikipedia page today!) I came across the Shirky Principle which I found interesting.

"An institution will seek to perpetuate the problems to which it provides solutions."

How do you think that informs the redesigns at YouTube? (teehee!)

  • @nddulac Great point!

  • I really hope SOPA and PIPA don't pass, the last thing the internet needs is restrictions on such freedoms. They have good intentions, but I just think the way they're going to go about it isn't quite right.

  • @TheL1ttleGuy Me too. The problem is the entertainment lobbyists put so much money into the politician campaigns the politicians almost feel obliged until their constituents start writing and telling them they'll vote them out of office.

  • My favorite point made in this talk comes at the beginning - that when Domain Name Servers fail to point you to the right address, you can always use the IP number. think about that. Because the next swipe by the media industry will be to gain the right to launch Denial of Service attacks on any site they see as being out of line (while of course complaining if anyone launches such attacks against their own sites.)

  • @nddulac You know, I thought about that. I'm sure that'll be in there when they try again. We need term limits so badly in this country.

  • Unfortunately I don't think most Americans are paying attention to this and eventually SOME version of these bills will get through :/

  • @ChristopherMast Yesterday seems to make a big impact an a lot shifted to no. They'll trry it agin, I'm sure.

  • I watch so much on TED, it's brilliant!

  • @simonissostreet Thanks, Simon. I watched your video, btw. It was amazing! Great job on CBBC

  • I had just watched that TED video and forwarded the link to my father. I was trying to explain why SOPA and PIPA were such a bad idea and he wasn't getting it. I hope after watching it he will understand...but I fear he won't. That's just him.

  • @realspacemodels All you can do is share the knowledge.

  • My Dad and I were talking a lot about this yesterday and I saw something interesting. Old politicians are trying to control free speech on the internet where a lot of my generation flourish. They're also trying to stop college students from voting in Wisconsin (I think). So... what did my generation do to the old politicians that pissed them off so much?! Just a thought.

  • Normally good things don´t come from Germany, but here is what we do:

If someone claims copyright infringement they have to sue the person or company and a judge will decide what to do based on copyright laws (that I am sure exist in the USA already, you don´t need a new bill for it).

Then the copyrighted content has to be taken down, NOT the whole website or service.

It works here, most videos on youtube with copyrighted content are blocked but NOT the whole youtube website.

  • @Nightyyou The entertainment industry needs to develop a new way of doing things. They are no longer the only people making new content.

  • Thanks for pointing this out!

And, yes you are right, TED Talks are amazing. I'm going to TEDxRheinMain (Frankfurt/Germany) in two weeks - already totally excited.

  • Without due process, SOPA and PIPA will both result in allowed uses (Fair Use doctrine) being squashed as much or more than outright theft and fraud. Big Media just wants a cheap and easy way to build a protected monopoly.

  • @ProFriend Yes. That is the fear. Well said.

  • We're in a mashup culture now. The genie won't go back into the bottle. But the big media companies will spend millions of dollars buying politicians who are willing to try to stuff it back in.

Yesterday's internet blackout did an unexpectedly good job in mobilizing awareness and action. I"m actually surprised at how many Senators changed their minds. The war isn't over. Big Media will keep hammering on this.

  • @mickeleh That is so true. I was glad to see so many participating. The entertainment industry needs to understand that they are not the only people making content anymore. It's not 1970. (And we need term limits)

  • Bill, thanks so much for pointing to this talk. It is by far the very best and clearest presentation I've seen. Clay Shirky is smart and right. He talks about the background and the future of this attack on the internet and on our behavior. The ending of his talk is really chilling. (NO SPOILERS) Everyone should take the time to click through and watch the talk.

  • interesting and worrisome. The media companies need to realise that a completely different approach to distribution is necessary, rather than trying these more and more desperate measures to control what people do with their stuff. It's already gotten to the point where illegally obtained content is better in many ways.

  • I'll watch that vid as soon as I get the chance.

On the bright side, as of Wednesday the 18th, more & more in congress are dropping their support.

The best thing we can do right now is DEMAND our state representatives to REPRESENT our views!

They say "SOPA & PIPA are to only for stopping piracy & (c) infringement. I stand behind that."

Yes, as some1 who knows a few indie film makers & musicians, I understand & support that.

BUT, these acts' are too vague, can AND WILL be ABUSED against freedom!

  • @Shaggy72 You hit the nail on the head. These acts have the stated intention of preventing piracy - but that is already illegal. So there must be another (unstated) point. And that point is to protect an industry against competition. And that is why it will be abused.

  • @nddulac "against competition" is EXACTLY RIGHT!!

When a studio puts their OWN ARTIST on the blacklist simply b/c his personal website generates a lot of traffic (50 cent, promoting his music), u KNOW something's not right.

You know when a studio has no problem spearheading a potential law that puts a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD BOY like Justin Beiber in jail for a minimum of FIVE YEARS (hey! he's made them their money already) simply for making & uploading COVER songs, you KNOW they're f'd up!

  • @nddulac There are ALREADY laws against (C) & piracy. They need to AMEND or make new laws FOCUISSING on THOSE SPECIFICALLY.

ENOUGH of this 700 to 1200 page B.S. (in which majority of congressmen admit they don't even read it). Get it down to specifics and go from there!

  • @nddulac I think that's right. They want to crush any competition. What they should be doing is working on new business models that include the internet. They don't know any more about the internet that their representatives.

  • all i have to say is FAIR USE LAW 17 U.S.C. § 107

  • @code187copkilla It seems to me that SOPA/PIPA are a very clear attack on fair use. It's disgusting.

  • @nddulac NO no no.. it is CLEARLY a means to STIMULATE the American economy in it will CREATE MANY,. MANY jobs in which workers build prisons and jails, and employ MANY Jailers, for the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of honest Americans who will be (and, retroactively, have broken) breaking the new laws.

It's a GENUIS move for stimulating our economy!!! Albeit the consumers will mostly be imprisoned, so that could stifle it later...

    ;) haha
