I dont know too much about SVOs, Im a 5.0 kinda guy but I assume you just keep the rpms up to deal with the lag. So is there no torque off the line? What rpm do you get full boost at?
@mikeman882921 Do you realize this is a 4 cyl also? And an Evo 8 will put down about 205whp on a Mustang dyno and weighs like 3100. This car put down over 300whp on a Mustang dyno, and is gutted and weighs around 2800lbs. It wouldn't be a race.
Gas mileage would be a toss up too, I know I only get about 20-22mpg mixed in my Evo, but it isn't stock.

@mikeman882921 Uh, this video was taken on the drive home from the dyno. Search for "Greg's Ford Mustang SVO Dyno" and you'll have your video. It has a Kenny Brown Cobra IRS with LSD, and he has 275 Hoosiers on all four corners, traction is not an issue for him.

I had an SVO, i give this guy credit for keeping his going, they are nickel and dime machines, non-stop, always something to fix. Stock though they really are not that fantastic, they were OK but my buddy had an 86 Celica GTS and he would walk me in every way possible. Curves, or in a direct run. But now he has a mazda speed3 and i have a Blown 439WHP mustang, so payback is a bitch..

There were turbocharged Mitsubishi Lancers long before the Evo was made the Galant vr4 was around before the evo too!And the Lancer Ex2000 turbo made for rally was pretty much an old version of the Evo,one version made 276 hp similar to Evo's today sales were low because of emission regulations in Japan.
Apples to oranges from the factory. 100HP difference. A modded 2.3 turbo is every bit as bad ass as an EVO. You can see the videos on here for proof of 1/4 ET's.

@dib07ce hey fool, #1 hitting 300 rwhp in a 2.3 is easy to do and does not require a new turbo, a new header/manifold, or a ported head. #2 these motors will hold 500 RWHP reliably on the STOCK bottom end, and when built, will hold 1000+HP on the stock block and crank. #3 they're cheap as hell to build. #4 when your POS honda was still carbed and putting out 50 horsepower, this motor from ford was fuel injected, turbocharged, and intercooled making 200 horsepower. who the hell cares about honda?

You're comparing a newage DOHC motor to a 70's-80's SOHC motor. Anything with DOHC will make more power when boosted, the heads flow better. But the fact of the matter is that the 2.3 Turbo fords are known as being one of the best turbo engines, because they produce massive amounts of power with little modification.
How about you compare your corolla motor to a DOHC 2.3? 15lbs of boost with the Volvo head produces over 400whp.

@dib07ce Actually on a stock SVO/turbocoupe block you can run a holset GX35 @ 18psi with a ported upper and lower intake manifold, tubuler exhaust manifold a 3 inch pipe is good for 445 at the crank which is around 379 to the wheels. The achillies heal of the lima has always been with the cylinder head, but esslinger can fix that as well as a B234f head. The CVH head flowed less than a ported iron head aswell as the older 4 cylinders around the time of the 80s, so rly this engine aint bad.
@kingcobra101z . this engine has two good points. it comes with a turbo and it's made out of iron so you can throw as much boost into it as you want. but to say this engine is bad ass is ridiculous. you said it yourself, the head is shit. SOHC with only 8 valves??? now i know you can "just" swap a volvo head on. but that's like me "just" adding forged internals in my corolla. cost aside.

Again this motor is not expensive to build, I see one in almost every car show and you can find in any ford forum people who have done the build. I do not see to many turbo corrola yet I am not dumb enough to say because I hav't seen any that there are "few and far between."
@dib07ce Firstly, know what your talking about before downplaying something. The 2.3L Ford is one of the best 4 cylinder powerplants ever designed by anyone, and they are a 40 year old design. Yes it has only 8 valves, but unlike almost every import ricer, they will never bend a valve if the timing belt breaks. The turbo versions come with stock forged internals capable of around 500hp. Jon Huber, Jon Blair, and many others have pushe the 2.3 into the 4 digit power numbers. So yes, badass

Has anyone ever "backdated" an SVO by dropping in the Boss 302 V-8? Originally Ford had wanted to use the Boss 302 engine but demurred because of the 2nd oil crisis of '79.
i'm sure someone has because he thought that by doing so he would "re-establish the muscle car title to the Mustang". no doubt he was frowned upon by the SVO community. Besides, a 2.3 turbo with injectors, at the time, was innovative and revolutionary. Taking the original engine out and replacing it with any other kind would be, in many SVO fan's opinion, an abomination to what the SVO truly was meant to be: european tech crossed with american style.
Those SVO's looook SICK i love the single head light. But I've heard those 2.3's aint much to work with in the power department. Is this true? Those cars are dirt cheap but wondering if it is worth building the 2.3 or dropping in a 5.8?

dont be so sure i have seen plenty of wrx and evo at the track run mid 14's stock i have also seen a stock 85 svo go mid 14's so it could be a good race. Either way i think its a great car keep in mind it was a 2.3l 4 banger from the mid 80's and it came with ajustable shocks so it handled well to.

Nobody hates on my SVO in real life, lol. I get nothing but props from everyone especially the import/tuner crowd. They are fantastic cars that you really cant fully appreciate until you sit in and drive one. Everyone who drives my SVO falls in love with it. If Ford could build this same car again today they would sell like crazy; it just wasn't appreciated back in the 80s when V8s were still king for performance.

you call this inovation??? all the work done to this 2.3L monster, and it only pushs 290whp. a stock 4g63 (2.0L) makes well over 300whp @22psi. b18's are capable of 400hp at 22psi.
this is an IRON block, with EIGHT less valves and 0.3 liters more then it should. this is the worst 4cyl engine that i have yet to see. how does the NA SVO make the same power as the 1.5L civic DX? this is inovation? put enough boost into anything and it will make power.

@dib07ce hey fool, #1 hitting 300 rwhp in a 2.3 is easy to do and does not require a new turbo, a new header/manifold, or a ported head. #2 these motors will hold 500 RWHP reliably on the STOCK bottom end, and when built, will hold 1000+HP on the stock block and crank. #3 they're cheap as hell to build. #4 when your POS honda was still carbed and putting out 50 horsepower, this motor from ford was fuel injected, turbocharged, and intercooled making 200 horsepower. who the hell cares about honda?

Comparing a diesel to a gasoline engine, different engine, different powerbands, your point is moot.
HP is calculated by TQ and RPM.
A low HP engine with high TQ means it has a very NARROW powerband (IE: Diesels).
Hence why any car with a large turbo makes more TQ than HP (the powerband comes later in the RPM range)

You're comparing a newage DOHC motor to a 70's-80's SOHC motor. Anything with DOHC will make more power when boosted, the heads flow better. But the fact of the matter is that the 2.3 Turbo fords are known as being one of the best turbo engines, because they produce massive amounts of power with little modification.
How about you compare your corolla motor to a DOHC 2.3? 15lbs of boost with the Volvo head produces over 400whp.

Who said anything about innovation? It's a 70's turbo motor that was originally in a pinto.
The fact that they still exist today and can hold massive amounts of power (something Honduh's can't do) is what makes them good.
650whp on a stock block, more than enough to put you in the 8's.
450whp on stock internals and you will be running 10's. Oh yeah, and it's cheap as hell to get there.

@dib07ce Actually on a stock SVO/turbocoupe block you can run a holset GX35 @ 18psi with a ported upper and lower intake manifold, tubuler exhaust manifold a 3 inch pipe is good for 445 at the crank which is around 379 to the wheels. The achillies heal of the lima has always been with the cylinder head, but esslinger can fix that as well as a B234f head. The CVH head flowed less than a ported iron head aswell as the older 4 cylinders around the time of the 80s, so rly this engine aint bad.

Again this motor is not expensive to build, I see one in almost every car show and you can find in any ford forum people who have done the build. I do not see to many turbo corrola yet I am not dumb enough to say because I hav't seen any that there are "few and far between."

@dib07ce Firstly, know what your talking about before downplaying something. The 2.3L Ford is one of the best 4 cylinder powerplants ever designed by anyone, and they are a 40 year old design. Yes it has only 8 valves, but unlike almost every import ricer, they will never bend a valve if the timing belt breaks. The turbo versions come with stock forged internals capable of around 500hp. Jon Huber, Jon Blair, and many others have pushe the 2.3 into the 4 digit power numbers. So yes, badass

Has anyone ever "backdated" an SVO by dropping in the Boss 302 V-8? Originally Ford had wanted to use the Boss 302 engine but demurred because of the 2nd oil crisis of '79.

i'm sure someone has because he thought that by doing so he would "re-establish the muscle car title to the Mustang". no doubt he was frowned upon by the SVO community. Besides, a 2.3 turbo with injectors, at the time, was innovative and revolutionary. Taking the original engine out and replacing it with any other kind would be, in many SVO fan's opinion, an abomination to what the SVO truly was meant to be: european tech crossed with american style.

Only the 1985-86 specification model 2.3 turbo with its 205 horses is considered to be the most advanced.

Those SVO's looook SICK i love the single head light. But I've heard those 2.3's aint much to work with in the power department. Is this true? Those cars are dirt cheap but wondering if it is worth building the 2.3 or dropping in a 5.8?

the svo's were amazingly quick when they came out.
but top end not so much
but idk anyplace where ur gonna go over 100 in the us

I've always hated that car...A good chance we don't see too many on the road ! Mustang 4 and 6 cylinder suck. There's no replacement for displacement. A Pony must have a 8 cyl, stick and coupe. POINT !

But the funny thing is at the time it was sold (1984-1986), it and the lower-cost Turbo GT both cost more than the 5.0 Mustang.
