Wow. If I didn't play this piece before, I'd have absolutely no clue of tempo. Just shows how dramatic conducting styles change from person to person.
song of the blacksmith is really confusing for the trombones... we don't have anything that matches up with the other pieces till the 'hammer' comes along at the end.
You guys have some killer clarinets. We're playing this song at my high school right now so I know it, sounds really good! You took movements one and four way faster than we are, though. But hey, there's no right and wrong in music :)
From what I've heard of other orchestras, and from what we do in my university band when playing this song, the tempo in this version is just a little too slow, barely. But, they made it work fine.
Agreed. In the band I'm doing this with, he said it's supposed to be a little bit faster. My conductor brought in a sung version of the song. ^.^ funniest thing ever.
I agree. By no fault of the musicians, this piece did seem a bit too slow. It's not all that uncommon though to take this movement a little on the slow side. Many conductors believe that "The Blacksmith Song" should be played at a slower tempo because of the blacksmith's slow and deliberate speed of work.
Fourth movement, first greensleves melody, euphonium needs to come out mondo mas. trombones and such can quiet down until the low octave dargason, but all in all good work euph.
It's played at a significantly slower tempo than the original composition, and your low brass section could have used a bit more practice, however it was very good as a whole.
It's marked Allegro Moderato, so it's open to interpretation. I've even heard faster recordings of this movement. I guess it really depends on how well the solo alto sax player can set the tempo and how lightly the band can tongue.
Anyway, this is a great performance of one of the greatest pieces in all of band literature!
i agree, it is a very fun solo, i am playing it now. i cant say i think its that high though...... it kinda depends on the player themself i think. i have a good high register but a very suckish low register.... but it is still a more difficult solo.
You all did a great job on this piece! I am playing the solo clarinet part and even though I have played several times over the years, I know how difficult this piece can be. You all sound great and the clarinets really are very refined on Dargason. Keep up the great work.
the "anvil" sound should be more refined and not so splooshy. i don't know how to describe it. the ending chord could have been worked on more. good job though, its a super tough piece, and your articulation, especially on those trumpet parts is fantastic!
the 4th movement sounds like greensleeves because it is greensleeves... or a variation of it. I'm a euphonium player and this is by far may favorite peice ot play.
Not a bad performance. I thought the 1st and 2nd trombones were very good but the bass trombone could be a bit stronger. I would know, I played that bass trombone part my junior year. It was still a good performance, better than my band on average.
Wow ur low brass can relly kick some names and take some ass! but ya that i do agree with zootsuite that blacksmith shuld be faster (at least thats wat my band did) nice solos (i played the sax 1)
I recall the song being a lil faster when we played it, but then my band had a tendency to rush. And we had a real nice sounding railroad spike hit. But, still a good rendition.
well all i have to say is that my high school band does not even try to attempt the 2ed movement and that was great honestly keep up the god work!!!!!!!!
On Song of the Blacksmith, the last chord wasn't together. On Fantasia, once again, the drums overpowered. They're a good percussion section instrumentally, but they need to learn to blend with the band. The trumpet section sounded especially good on Fantasia, and the Alto Saxes/French Horns were incredibly good on Song of the Blacksmith. Tuba got a bit flustered at the end of Fantasia, but the Piccolo player was excellent. Overall, good.
wah!!!! This is the only thing I don't like in Second suite. TOOO MUCH FLUTE RESTING AND ANNOYING COUNTING!!! But you guys were awesome. Great job!! But I agree with robotluvr. Way brighter buddy.

If I remember correctly the Third Clarinet part for "Fantasia of the Dargason" is surprisingly hard 'cause it goes over the break a lot.

song of the blacksmith is supposed to be slow...it is supposed to imitate the sounds of a blacksmith's hammer striking the anivil, heavy and powerful

Blacksmith way too slow. needs more separation on movement 3. euph was covered a little bit in 4, but nice playing. end of 4 was a little rough.
Kaloray 3 years ago
Hm. Song of the Blacksmith could have been a bit faster. The tempo for Dargasson was about right though I think.
silvofithrade2759 3 years ago
For the sake of that poor tuba at the end (and a few others too for that matter), I prefer to play the fourth movement just a tad slower.
drmbeaufort 3 years ago
3rd movement can be played a little faster, adds intensity and contrast among movements

It seems like the euphonium had a little trouble with the high note at 3:43. I would too after that many solos...

I disagree with everyone that mvmt. 3 should be faster. Does a Blacksmith hurry through their work? It should sound a bit labored.
