Wayne does an interesting version of this, although the Richard Harris original version from 1968 will always be the version that I like the best. Wayne plays around with his upper range here, which is fantastic....what a voice!
I will never forget his concert at the Frontier Hotel which was shown on Showtime. I taped it but the tape is worn out. Would love a new copy. Do we have to wait till he dies before we can enjoy his concert music?
As Wayne's former Bass vocalist I Nic Val still think there is no one who can out perform the CHIEF this video proves it to be so. I miss the stage with this ICON of music and cherish the experience deeply
@Bassclef50, I have to agree with you Nic. There will never be another Wayne Newton!! I have been going to Wayne's shows for over 32 yrs now and he is ,and always will be "Mr. Las Vegas", the one and only true Midnight Idol. I am quite sure you miss being on stage with Wayne. I cherish every show I have been to as well. He is a true ICON!!!
every great artist who sang this Jimmy Webb masterpiece, gave the best of his own talent and performance. every version has its own merit. and there are many many versions. some of them makes you feel blue (e.g R.Harris), another makes you feel groovy (Donna Summer) etc.
@vanorenstein Jimmy Webb didn't need this song for a meal ticket. He's written numerous hits. Donna Summer's version of this song was a huge hit, but Richard Harris' was one of the biggest hits of 1968.
i just want to say that wayne newton is a great performer and always will be remembered for that and that he will always be mr. las vegas. i have never seem him personally myself perform live but i heard he was great. i've always wanted to see him perform when he was over at the stardust in las vegas. cheryl
I totally agree with you WayneNo1fan. Wayne does this song better than anyone I have ever heard. He puts so much of his heart and soul into this performance. It is awesome when you watch it live. You can hear a pin drop. He captivates the whole audience!!!!!
Thank God, I have seen Wayne Newton perform this live three times. Each of the two times I saw it in Las Vegas, the number ended with rain pouring down from the proscenium arch. Honestly, I was so overcome with joy and wonderment that it is nearly indescribable.
I love to listen to Wayne when he had this power. I attended his concert in San Bernardino in July... he barely has a voice left. It's great to have youtube videos to remember him in his prime.
This is a great version, the performance, overcoming the absurdity of the lyrics, but I have one thing about your account, if its a tribute to Wayne Newton...home come you don't have a video of him singing "Danke Shoen"?
Still great job with all of these videos, keep uyp the great work
listen....wayne is no different than any other artist who's ever lived.....father time has just got him...nothing else needs to be said....he's past his prime as a singer, but he's still the consumate entertainer.....it's happens to the best of them....frank, dino, sammy, and wayne too....nothing to be ashamed of.....this man has nothing to be ashamed of considering the fame he has achieved.
You got that right!!!!! There was no other entertainer like him in these days, I can't hardly bare to think of him the way his voice is now, but he is better on some nights than others and no one can entertain an audience like this man.
MacArthur Park was written by Jimmy Webb. It was first recorded by Richard Harris in 1968. Donna Summer is also known for her version in 1978. Check out my Wayne Newton's version in a 1977 concert.
First it is not a ridiculously stupid song about a cake when you realize a cake getting rained on is a metaphor for a relationship gone bad. "I'll never have that recipe again," means they'll never be able to recreate a new relationship like the one just lost. It is a beautiful song about a lost relationship, getting over it and moving forward into the future.
WAYNE at his ultimate best--he poured his heart into this song! This usually was the finale to his Vegas shows! Wayne playing the Frontier Hotel, the Sands and the Desert Inn---all GONE! SAD! THESE were the days and Wayne was at his finest!
he number 1 in my books. He is very nice. I had the honor to meet him face to face. he even signed a picture for me.he like fine wine . he is not old just sweetest grapes on vine.

If it wasn't for Donna Summer's version, Jimmy Webb might be at the food stamp office right now.

@WayneNo1fan Love Harris and respect Mr.Newton but the best version of this masterpiece is the composer himself Jimmy Webb!

I accept that you like Waynes version more, but I prefer how Richard Harris sings it. Can we agree to accept each others taste???
