@HorizonRCdotCom does this model have reverse? Also if i was to but this truck what is the first upgrade you suggest for all round performance? I plan to run everything from a motocross track to pavement and gravel to sand ect.
@HPIEfirestormht You don't need to spend a lot to get a good brushless system. Check out the Dynamite Fuze 5800kv and 6800kv systems. You can get the combos for either, motor w/ESC for under $115.
hello man good video nice truck i'm getting for myself but i have no idea what the best truck is ? i'm thinking the ( Losi High Roller RTR Truck ) or the dessert one ? thanks man !!!!!!
@dylanmabbott The Desert Truck will handle better on prepared surfaces due to it's XXX-T heritage. The HIGHroller has greater ground clearance so it's easier to go more off-road places.
How do i get these wheels on my desert truck just got 2 for the rear and it has a hex got my buggy hex and put it on but the screw that you put the nut on is to short what do i do to put these on.
@johnwo1 Those won't work. They're designed for the AD2/XXX-T CR that feature the quick change hubs. You'd need to totally retrofit the rear end of your truck with XXX-T CR parts to make them work
I wanted to get some RPM Revolver rims for my Desert Truck, but they are all for either Traxxas or Associated trucks, will any of those fit the Desert Truck correctly?
hello horizon hobby... I have a desert truck with a venom 6-Cell 7.2V 4200mAh NiMH Battery and prophet sport charger..... my problem is that the charger doesn't charge the battery, after i connect t and press the start button the charger beeps 2 times and the light starts to blink.. when i use it the truck i goes really slow as if the battery was low... what can i do?
I brushless in my desert truck and every time i hit full throttle rite away in my desert truck it makes this loud nosie like somethings jammed but when i go a little slower than full throttle it is normal is there any thing i can do to stop this and is this because my slipper is to loose,
@johnwo1 Thought so. What it's doing is called cogging and its a problem pretty exclusive to sensorless systems. The ESC can't always keep an eye on where the rotor is in relation to the poles and this can cause problems. What ESC are you using?
@HorizonRCdotCom I am running a ezrun 60AMP and a venom 5.5t motor and the motor keeps stopping because the esc had over heat protection when im off road it over heats what pinion should i use for it to stop doing that what gear should i use to gear it down.
@johnwo1 First of all that's a really insane motor. I don't know that I would run one that hot in this truck. That being said I would go for the largest spur gear you could find, LOSA3993 is the 90T Spur and probably put like a 16 or 17T Pinion on it.
@HorizonRCdotCom Thanks for that. It is high for off road but the transmission is so tough i have owned the truck for 1 year and run 3s lipo 5000mah and only striped a idler gear form doing donuts in the dirt.
Will the high roller body fit on the desert truck with a few mods and is there any way to extend the chassis to make it longer and perform better than it already is and is there any other truck body's that will fit the desert truck.
@johnwo1 You'd need to come up with a totally different body mounting setup than what the truck comes with. The only way that I know of to lengthen the chassis would be to do something like install the CRC Short Course Conversion (CLN7700). For other bodies, if you remove the rear "cage" then any body for the XXX-T will fit.
Is this truck waterproof? I am just wondering because I am really interested in this truck and when i clean my r/c I like to be able to do it with out taking out the receiver, steering servo, and esc.
You can put 8.4v in the stock ESC just need to watch out so it dont get to hot and make sure you change the connectors to deans cause mine stated melting and it was bubbling this is the most durable i have ever owned and driven i have put brushless into it 5.5t and a 60amp esc and a 3s lipo 5000mah and it flys i hit it off a 2m ramp got more than 4m high and i laned it on the roof one wheel A arm nose rear every thing and i have owned it for atleast 1 year now and put it threw hell neva broke.
@HorizonRCdotCom I only did that because the next week i got my brushless not telling every one to go off run 8.4v in their truck i just wasnt having good top speed with my wrecked 7.2v packs so i tryed it but true it would void warranty.
what are the smallest tiers i can fit on this truck are they the road weapons cause i am looking for smaller tiers for road so i can do a few tricks you can only do with smaller tiers.
Today I took my my car down to the track and I had a losi Strike ESC, Motor and a 5200mAh 2s lipo and when i was landing jumps my bumper kept falling off becaus all the 4 screws in the skid plate a slipped out on the fron end.
Can you please help me so I can stop this happening because I don't want to hurt my Desert Truck.
I Recently got a 5200mAh 7.4v 2s lipo for my dt and also a strike esc to handle it but Today I was running it and after about 15-20 mins it stopped. i found out how i happend. the souldering came off the motor.Could I tru a cooling fan. do you have any other way i can make my electronics run cooler without spenting over $10. thanks
I think I have two choice and I'm really stuck which one I should get. I was thinking of getting a Stock xl-5 Stampede or a Stock 1/16 e-revo with a brushed motor ( Does about 30 mph ) .
@Icywolf44 I have the Xl5 stampede, have had it for 2 years. It is by far the best bang for the buck RC in my collection. Very durable, handles great, lots of fun. In 2 years I've replaced 1 motor and 1 esc, the shocks and the front bulkehed, but I bash it hard at the skate park, and the shocks I could have rebuilt. The esc was the old non-waterproof design and I think I may have killed it as I ran into a snowbank in the parking lot.
I have a traxxas slash and im wondering if I should a Traxxas Stampede, Hpi Brama 10b, hpi cyper 10b, or a losi desert truck. Im only getting one. Any suggestions.
@Icywolf44 The Stampede and Slash would share many parts and the Stampede would have the most ground clearance of the vehicles you list there. The Desert Truck would probably be the fastest and best handling out of the box.

I got a losi desert truck for christmas and one problem i have had so far is the souldering is comming away from the motor. my dad just soulders it back on and it comes off again. Could it be the terain or the motor getting to hot and melting the soulder.
That's a heat issue. How long into the run is it coming un-soldered? Your motor should not be getting that hot. Check the gear mesh to make sure it's not too tight and bound up. That will certainly cause the motor to overheat.
I got it last christmas from America and have only had it for 2 days. I checked the gear mesh and yer nothing is wrong with it. I took it to my local hobby shop and they are going to get a new motor in for me and if that does not work im getting a whole new car.
My Battery is a 2400mAh 7.2v lastes about 15 mins but it depends on how well you maintain it. I had trouble with mine because i took it threw sand and got my bearings dirty and my brother did not and he got longer run times. And dont go from Nutral to full throtle imeadietly it takes alot of power.
i know you have to push losi products probably because they gave the thing to you guys to test and keep, but at least be honest and tell ppl to piss the tamiya connectors off and replace them with some high current connectors.
tamiya connectors are just a meltdown waiting to happen.
We test the vehicles as they come out of the box, including connectors in most instances. If you check out the SC10 RTR review we just recently posted we addressed the connectors there. I did not have any issue with the connectors out of the box.
what would I be expecting to pay of the net and in the local hobby shop .thanks
oh and great video.
Thank you sssssssssooooooooo much.
and do the break often caus I herd they are pretty sturdy trucks. and i race my buggy all the time and every tine it breaks so all i want is a good sturdy truck. could this one stang racing or not
i got one and it goes shit fast on concrete and asphalt with stock motor and 7.4v lipo and soon im getting a 13.5t motor with 60 amp esc from hobbywing
If you're looking at out and out speed then check out the Losi Speed-T. It's a little over you're $250 budget (It's $299.99 on the Horizon Hobby Website) but it's designed with speed in mind. From what I've seen of them the Desert Truck and the Slash are pretty similar in top speed with maybe a slight edge going to the Desert Truck. The 18R is neat for a little truck, meaning you need specialized ESC's, motors and batteries. I don't know anything about the e10, sorry.
They're really 2 totally different trucks and 2-different performance rhelms. The Slash features a higher CG, narrower tires, longer wheel base, molded composite shocks and shock caps, 27mhz Radio System and it can handle up to 7-cells with the stock ESC. The Desert Truck has a lower CG and stance, shorter wheel base, working lights, wider tires, aluminum shocks and it comes with a Spektrum-equipped radio system as well. They're both awesome trucks and a ton of fun.
Steel Turnbuckles allow you to change the front and rear camber settings along with the front toe in. They offer better adjustability than fixed plastic camber and steering links which offer no adjustment. Years ago some manufacturers would just include threaded rod for camber and steering links. While better than the fixed links anytime you wanted to make a change you had to pop a ball cup off. Not very efficient nor precise.
I've owned 2 losi desert trucks, and loved them both, my current losi DT has a castle mamba max esc and 5700kv motor, pushin a 3 cell lipo... over all the truck is a lil to light for high speed runs, the truck likes to lift up off the ground and fly off...
Only small flaw I see with the LDT is the MIP CVDs in the rear, after going brushless i bent both of them, like Cs from the power, and also snaped the pins inside the CVDS.
All three trucks that you're talking about are really different classes of trucks. I am not that familiar with the E-Firestorm to make a judgment there but it looks to be more of a budget racer than a backyard basher. The Slash is also more of a spec-class racer as well.
how tough is the truck??? i've got an xcelorin 6.5t brushless system waitn to go into something and i can't decide between traxxas slash and the desert truck...any thoughts!!
Awesome truck for the price. I think it should be available as a roller, or with a brushless system because I would just toss the stock stuff anyways. Ive had a few mini-t pros and a xxxt-cr and I have no doubt this desert truck would kick ass with lipo and xcelorin.
is it normal for the truck to sound just a little bit scratchy after driving it a few times? i had just gotten a new motor, even though it sound that way, it still works fine, but it did flip over a lot in the sand wen i was driving it. do you think there might be somthing wrong with it?
Check the spur gear and pinion gear. The motor can shift if you flip it hard enough, affecting your gear mesh. You could also have a small rock or something between the teeth on one of your gears.
The Stock ESC does not have a LiPo cutoff built into it so I would not recommend it. I haven't measured out the actual range, but I will say that I never had any range issues during my testing.
Absolutely. You'll need to pick up a different pinion gear (or a few actually) to experiment with the gearing with the new motor system. The transmission is rock-solid thanks to it's racing-heritage design.
With the stock motor and ESC I wouldn't recommend it. The ESC is rated for 4-6 Cells only. With an Xcelorin system, as you were talking, I'd say it wouldn't be an issue.

There's a few things you can do:
Loosen the slipper clutch
Move the rear shocks out one hole on the A-Arms
Move the rear shocks in one hole on the shock tower
Increase the rear toe-in
Reduce the amount of throttle you're using.

My Measge to you,
1. Keep the desert truck clean and maintaind
2. dont go from Nutral to full throtle imeadietly

i know you have to push losi products probably because they gave the thing to you guys to test and keep, but at least be honest and tell ppl to piss the tamiya connectors off and replace them with some high current connectors.
tamiya connectors are just a meltdown waiting to happen.
obzelite 2 years ago
We test the vehicles as they come out of the box, including connectors in most instances. If you check out the SC10 RTR review we just recently posted we addressed the connectors there. I did not have any issue with the connectors out of the box.

RCBuggy100 2 years ago
The Desert Truck is based off of the XXX-T which is a very durable truck.
I don't know about your shop but the Desert Truck is currently $229.99 on the Horizon Hobby Website

Would the Dynamite EP4600 be just as good as the battery in the video?
bmx65 2 years ago
They would be very similar, yes, but the Dynamite EP4600 has Tamiya connectors where the one shown here has EC3 Connectors.
HorizonRCdotCom 2 years ago
speed-wise would it be the same?
bmx65 2 years ago
Yeah, I'd say you should see about the same speeds with either.

thx man, youve been a real help

If you're looking at out and out speed then check out the Losi Speed-T. It's a little over you're $250 budget (It's $299.99 on the Horizon Hobby Website) but it's designed with speed in mind. From what I've seen of them the Desert Truck and the Slash are pretty similar in top speed with maybe a slight edge going to the Desert Truck. The 18R is neat for a little truck, meaning you need specialized ESC's, motors and batteries. I don't know anything about the e10, sorry.

Just don't have the time with all the other projects. Trust me we'd love to review just about everything that comes out.
HorizonRCdotCom 2 years ago
I kinda doubt it.
HorizonRCdotCom 2 years ago
They're really 2 totally different trucks and 2-different performance rhelms. The Slash features a higher CG, narrower tires, longer wheel base, molded composite shocks and shock caps, 27mhz Radio System and it can handle up to 7-cells with the stock ESC. The Desert Truck has a lower CG and stance, shorter wheel base, working lights, wider tires, aluminum shocks and it comes with a Spektrum-equipped radio system as well. They're both awesome trucks and a ton of fun.
HorizonRCdotCom 2 years ago
Yeah, It looks really good and losi LM -32k motor ( shared with losi highroller truck ) appears to be powerful enough for a 2 wd truck

What is the purpose on steel turnbuckles....... Do you prefer them
stampedevxl 3 years ago

ThEPuP4x4 3 years ago
All three trucks that you're talking about are really different classes of trucks. I am not that familiar with the E-Firestorm to make a judgment there but it looks to be more of a budget racer than a backyard basher. The Slash is also more of a spec-class racer as well.
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
Would you prefer this or the traxxas slash or hpi e-firestorm in terms of overall speed, features, and offroading such as grass and/or dirt

HOW FAST ???

did u not watch the video
hdhproductions7 3 years ago
how tough is the truck??? i've got an xcelorin 6.5t brushless system waitn to go into something and i can't decide between traxxas slash and the desert truck...any thoughts!!
s2j00b5 3 years ago
got the truck now its wicked, check my vids
s2j00b5 3 years ago
Awesome truck for the price. I think it should be available as a roller, or with a brushless system because I would just toss the stock stuff anyways. Ive had a few mini-t pros and a xxxt-cr and I have no doubt this desert truck would kick ass with lipo and xcelorin.
BuglyAstard 3 years ago
it should be brushless ready, i hear the tranny sucks nuts...

gday just wondering how well a 5400mah trakpower 2s lipo would go with the desert truck cheers.
rsmarr001 3 years ago
is it normal for the truck to sound just a little bit scratchy after driving it a few times? i had just gotten a new motor, even though it sound that way, it still works fine, but it did flip over a lot in the sand wen i was driving it. do you think there might be somthing wrong with it?
bmx65 3 years ago
Check the spur gear and pinion gear. The motor can shift if you flip it hard enough, affecting your gear mesh. You could also have a small rock or something between the teeth on one of your gears.
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
well i know its not the sper gearor the pinion because i checked it and it looks fine, where do you think a rock could be and how can i get it out?
bmx65 3 years ago
Is it suitable to use with 7.4v lipo? and what is the range of the radio?
Cherokee15676 3 years ago
The Stock ESC does not have a LiPo cutoff built into it so I would not recommend it. I haven't measured out the actual range, but I will say that I never had any range issues during my testing.
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
Hi, what is the lowest turn motor the stock esc will handle?
Cherokee15676 3 years ago
The stock ESC is rated for down to a 12-Turn motor.
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
You can look up the price on google. There is no nitro version either.
Artayes 3 years ago
hey i'm getting this truck with a losi brushless system, will the truck be able to handle it running with a 5000mah ni-mh battery? thanx alot
PinePicker87 3 years ago
Absolutely. You'll need to pick up a different pinion gear (or a few actually) to experiment with the gearing with the new motor system. The transmission is rock-solid thanks to it's racing-heritage design.
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
can it handle a 7 cell stock?
PinePicker87 3 years ago
With the stock motor and ESC I wouldn't recommend it. The ESC is rated for 4-6 Cells only. With an Xcelorin system, as you were talking, I'd say it wouldn't be an issue.

i just got one of these for my birthday its all stock right now but i got a 4200mAh VENOM battery. any suggestions?
ADAMSLAYER1995 3 years ago
Extra battery packs, 'cause you're not going to want to stop :)
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
how long of a run time did you get out of it?
bmx65 3 years ago
With a Losi 4600mAh, while I didn't have a stopwatch going, I'd say we got abuot 10-12 minutes out of a charge easily.
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
10-12 mins then it was dead?
bmx65 3 years ago
No, we never ran a pack completely out in the truck. We swapped packs before they went soft during our testing.
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
ooh, thank you, not many channels on youtube likt yours would reply back
schutterbug 3 years ago
Anytime, we aim to please :)
HorizonRCdotCom 3 years ago
how long did you run it before changing packs?
and what is the retail price?
also do they make a nitro version?
