The excellent book, "The ancestor's tale " by Richard Dawkins has an interesting chapter 'Axolotl's tale' which explains about neoteny or progenesis, the evolutionary consequence of which is called paedomorphosis. The axolotl is just an extreme among salamanders. Many species seem to be , to some extent, paedomorphic, others do other heterochronically interesting things. there are other subspecies in the lake of patzcuaro (michoacan) too, but again, they're very threatened due to pollution, I've never seen them in any pet stores around here in michoacan. I'd love to have one or 2

Nonnative fish such as African tilapia and Asian carp have also recently been introduced to the waters. These new fish have been eating the axolotls' young, as well as its primary source of food.[2] The axolotl is currently on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's annual Red List of threatened species.[3] Post this on all videos about Axolotl if you care :(

To all the people whining about how awful it is to keep an endangered animal as a pet, these animals are not taken from the wild. They only exist in two locations in Mexico, and all the ones people keep as pets are captive bred. Isn't it better to preserve a species in captivity than let it die out altogether?

everytime someone asks "where or how did you get it" they're is never an answer. I want one but maybe its through the black market or something.. they're a "protected" species native to mexico, mexico. (mexico state) but somehow people have it in this country and they are hard to find and you don't see them in fish stores catalogs. I want one but I don't want to go to mexico to get one cause it's a federal crime now ;)

@Bamchikibam i think that you can have an aquarium at least bigger than 10 gallons. and if you want to set him with a snail, you might want to wait a while cuz he might eat them but he won't when he's at least7 years old or something

@Snowpoint1 Thanks, you are correct. It's a species of Tiger Salamander that keeps it's gills. Mudskippers are fish, Mudpuppies are a different family of salamanders which look similar. Axlotls originate from Mexico.
