The D lock part looks only about a hlaf inch thick, what is the material used in that?

@sonofhendrix We pulled the part from our warehouse to measure it for you. You are correct. The U part is .55 inches thick and the part that inserts into the lock (tip of U) is .472 in thick. We also called our contact at MasterLock for information on the construcion of the U-Bolt. It is constucted of high-securety, harded steel.
