What your friends see: A splodge of pixels.

What you see: Massive torrent of underground water crashing furiously through the walls of the fortress, while the miner dwarf who unleashed the fury grabs tight to the walls of the place to avoid being crushed under the massive pressure. The water flows rapidly into the magma, turning it into obsidian which can be later used to forge new weapons. A fire imp living in the caverns also took it in the ass, which is good.

You can get a lot of 2D tile graphic packs that other players put together to replace the ASCII. I just started DF with graphic packs and it becomes so much more playable for me.

@Jarelk Basically, there is 1 block between the high-pressure water and magma. A dwarf is on the magma side, and mines the block. Stuff happens.

Yeah, Dwarf Fortress is an incredibly in-depth and complicated juggernaut of a game and Minecraft has you stacking blocks like an infant.

@stevensonbak awesome game, it's called Dwarf Fortress, way better than Minecraft in my honest opinion. Yes, the only thing that prevents you from liking it at first glance are the graphics, which can be confusing, but past that it's a great game. It takes a while to see, but once you know what you are looking at... endless fun. =D

Gotta funnel out a single layer of lava out to a pool, then pour water over it for useful obsidian! You can dig it out normally, and then cut through the last obsidian wall separating the magma pool from the now empty single layer lava pool.

Dig out a wide single layer pond, and connect it to the magma vent (use diagonal spaces to connect the vent and the pond so your dwarves can still walk across it). Once it fills up with magma, pump water over the pond, and dig it up as obsidian. When you want to do it again, dig up the last bit of obsidian to open the magma again, and repeat. Make and sell sweet obsidian swords!

Holy Mecha Jesus, how much pressure did the water have? You don't seem to have extraordinarily high FPS, so you probably build a water tower all the way to the sky.

You start out with seven dwarves (with selected skills and items of your choosing if you want to, up to certain cost of points) and have fun. Build your fortress from scratch, train legendary warriors from childhood, defend your fort from beasts and hostiles... Each dwarf is unique with it's own character and likings, and each world is generated uniquely, with 38 billion tiles, not counting height levels - and the game is only in it's alpha stage.
