Great, great tune. Nice promo film. That is one groovy "Luncheon Vouchers" sticker on the cafe window ! Very retro. It even tops the brief glimpse of a Sheffield United mug in one of the other films. Is this St. Etienne's remake of "La Dolce Vita" ?
Just discovered this group. Fantastic. So sick of commercial radio. What other bands with similar sound should I look for. Need to fill my ipod with new stuff
@819home when you discover a band that you like and you want to find more of that kind of music ... just try the popular well documented website .allmusic.com ...
you write the name of the band that you want to know more information ...and then you will find a lil' list of some other more or less similar bands
One of my favorite things about Saint Etienne is their ability to carve well-fleshed stories through their musical styling, if that makes any sense. It's rare to find such atmospheric, quality pop music.
This track is off of Foxbase Alpha. Lately, I've been listening to the version from the Richard X updated Foxbase Beta. The bass in the Beta version is even more pulsing. It is also good to hear the end of the sample from the beginning of the song. The sample goes: "what you have been waiting for..." at the beginning. On the Beta version, it is completed with "bingo time" --- which I find immensely humorous.
This song is so awesome it almost has that 60's and Abba sound of innocence combined with it, ahhhhh so happy and brings such happiness to ones soul! I am so greatful to have lived in the 80s'such a magical time. I too was born in 64, year of the Dragon :)
Ditto on Starfish 05's comments--ahhhhhhh, my sentiments exactly. The song--and the mood of the video, too--take me straight back to the liberty and adventure of college days (UC Berkeley), looking at San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge from my apartment and dancing around the room with my roommate. Sweet.
I love days like these, days out, laying in the flowers, clear, warm sunshine, cafe food, grapes in the park, feeding the ducks, dancing to all those tunes that play forever in your head, singing along with Sarah Cracknell and the boys while she sings out sweet inspiration in the back seat.
@lynzrossmw Try searching for the album 'Fox Base Alpha'..if you like the 60s summer Hammond funky drummer sound you'll like this track too: Spring..here's a mix of it : watch?v=WtMKMAB31mw (put the you tube prefix in yourself) The album vocal is nicer in my HO...poptastically megamungus mate!
@lynzrossmw Found the album on a site called lavamus. Search on their homepage for: Saint Etienne Foxbase Alpha. You have it on my tried and tested basis (if that means anything!) it's a trusted site, good mp3 quality and ridiculously cheap...
I was living in Paris when 'FOx BAse ALpha' came out...Good times...misty eyes...Alas nothing is more detremental to finding that same happiness again than the pursuit of it...nostalgia sucks! Still I'm grateful for it happening at all!! Thank you for the up! ....On with the show and time for todays countdown conundrum!!
Just read an article about the album this track came from which asked why is it so overlooked and forgotten.... it was a real beauty.... i'm looking for Avenue and Railway jam somebody please upload if they can!!
Great tune that has stayed fresh sounding. Love the vid a first time view for me, they were all about quality weren't they. Northern soul samples aplenty. One is 'time is right for love' anyone know the others.
you know that old mixtape that you had way back then, when you'd take out your future wife to be on a sunny sunday afternoon to a country pub, in your triumph spitfire, hood down, hedges flashing by, and it sort of encapsulates a care-free period of your life before mortgages and kids came along?
well, this track was the 1st track on that mixtape, with massive attack's "be thankful" being the 2nd track...
I hate to ruin it for you, but has anyone really experienced what you're describing? I'm 21 and I don't think I'm living a carefree life just because I have no kids or mortgage... rent and tuition though...
@starfish05 totally agree - sunday afternoons when all you had to worry about was "have i got enough Rizla's for the rest of the day" with my girlfriend ......at uni....student days ....aaaaah :)
@starfish05 No mobile phones, no internet, crackly tapes in dodgy answer phones, no caller ident if people forgot to leave a number, grotty photo-copied fanzines, a fortune spent printing fly-posters to generate a "buzz". It seems like more than 20 or so years ago in lots of ways (!)
