my God this takes me back, my ex wife and myself + 2 friends ( cassie & jason sup guys if you come across this some age in the future!) - God this was an amazing show- Tomahawk ( mike patton's horrible band at the time ) opened for them - goodness this show was amazing ..
no disrespect to mike patton but that showing in Denver that night was shit.
damn I haven't heard this in probably 8 years. I had a burnt CD of live bootleg tool shows (remember when we used to burn cd's?) it had tons of stuff including this which to this day I have yet to find on the internet. this brings me back.
I'm pretty sure that Bruford is a huge influence on Danney Carey as a drummer too and Maynard did a cover of 20th Century Schizoid man so I mean it's obvious that they were all influenced individually but, I dunno I feel like the band as a whole was probably more influenced by Bill Hicks or Black Flag or something i dunno. It's definitely not even worth my ramblings to even talk about it either. Tool is one of my favorites of all time and realy popped my musical cherry or@least ushered in an era
@yehigota5inchtaint bill hicks and black flag? i mean bill hicks was a comedian who befriended tool and i see a lot more prog rock/crimson influence in tool than a black flag influence.
@phishman706 well, yeh tool and king crimson have the prog connection but, as far as the vibe and subject content it's the angryness of the band [in their earlier days, like undertow-which rollins is on] I would say I hear more of hicks or black flag. But, if you were going to just listen to the music and break it down by the genre than you could say cimson. Trust me I like Crimson a whole lot more than black flag. In '98 I went to my first (and only) King Crimson concert in B.A. Been a big Fripp fan for a time already. A concert like not one else. I would say to my friends that an UFO landed, the band came out, played, went back in and left. Didn't even tried to explain or describe what happened in stage, during the concert.
And yes, there Fripp was with his Fripptronics, creating soundscapes.
its obvious they've been inspired by Crimson but Tool still has its own style and you can't blame them from having influences, every musician has it,including Fripp
@lateralsx7 Tool is Great. King Crimson is great. Robert Fripp is great. I would say not one is born, raised and lives in a bubble. I don't think there's a single british contemporary musician that doesn't recognizes or feels indebted to american roots rock and/or folk music. To recognize influences is nothing to blame about or be ashamed of, looks to me more like a modesty and reality check
Fripp does his thing, you either get it or you don't. I don't care if you are on either side. I get it sometimes and not others that is the purpose of art. What I find compeling about Fripp and Crimson as well as Tool is that I keep coming back for more. I don't get everything they do but if I did they would become boring and I would have to move on to something else.
adam jones is a wanna be fripp art student whos guitar playing really doesnt compare to fripp , dont get me wrong i dig jones and what he does with the guitar is very creative, but his lead work has much to be desired. i would like to see him try the bridge in 21st sichzoid man or larks tongues in aspic part one.
@maxinedal lol, yeah right. AJ plays as a unit of a band, not as a lead guitar player. His playing is almost always directly related to what Danny Carey is doing, in that aspect his playing is genius, the polyrhythms and sound textures they create together are brilliant.
@MikeyRGuitar Yeah, you nailed it, man. In that regard, they bring together some of the best aspects of jazz (ensemble playing, with the guitarist fitting into the drummer's riffs), prog (polyrhythmic playing), and punk (no "guitar hero" crap).
adam jones is a wanna be fripp art student whos guitar playing really doesnt compare to fripp , dont get me wrong i dig jones and what he does with the guitar is very craetive but his lead work has much to be desired.
@mikedrud oh yes love the fripp influence to a already famous band [ tool ] best of both worlds , who said you cant have your cake and eat it? . . . this is pure heaven , its expanded my already bulging king crimson portfolio, russell the wizzard on myspace aug11 2010
That is a cool piece of music. If you like it, check out Sunn 0))) & Boris playing 'Fried Eagle Mind' on the 'Altar' album - it's a similar kind of thing.
This video is clearly underrated. Robert Fripp is obviously a big man in prog rock history, but we can't blame the mass to not know him. Frippertronics looping is what we hear here.
Point of distinction: Frippertronics was what he called it when it was tape-based. When it got more digital delay based, with guitar synth and other effects thrown in, he dubbed it Soundscapes.
fripp is the master gunius here...........tool learned just about everything from fripps music....it was all done 25 years before tool existed............this stuff goes back to late 70,s soundscapes fripp introduced......
@drumcatf8 Yea, and you can hear a lot of influence on Tool's music from what Fripp did in the early 1970's with Bruford, and Wetton also! I am starting to wonder if everybody new King Crimson would they start to question themselves if Jimi is really the greatest guitarist ever?
@DavidKinner ya i love king crimson..fripp and belew ..some very cool stuff, tool has been influenced by them big time..as for the greatest its kinda like colours..we all have a favorite but there is no greatest of best..its all beautifull music
@vonclod123 I just think with King Crimson it's so amazing how many different sounds they can change, and produce definitely one of my favorite bands, but then again their only constant member since their beginning is Fripp, so it's a lot easier to change your sound when you're surrounded by different musicians every time. I cannot wait for their new album! probably going to be a return to the Jazzy sound with Mel Collins, and Jakko.
@DavidKinner a new album thats cool, i think the belew lineup really clicked the way the guitars would intertwine in the rythms, when i first started listening to them it was that lineup so i guess its what i like best, i will for sure check out the new one, any member of kc is gonna be a true solid musician..what do you think of rush?..an influence for tool as well i think
@vonclod123 Rush is fucking awesome. I wish they would have done a few more albums like Hemispheres, 2112, Farewell to Kings, but I don't think they have put out a single album that wasn't solid. I don't know if Maynard ever said it, but I would not doubt it if Zappa may be an influence also. He is my favorite artist of all time. Do you like Zappa?
@DavidKinner haha i was gonna mention zappa... i,m nore familiar with apostraphe, joes garage, shiek yer booty and i like the guitare oriented stuff he did...great stuff its sad he's gone
@vonclod123 He was definitely amazing, it's soo bad he died he probably would have ended up making close to 130 albums he already released like 70 when he was alive, and close to 30 after he died. I love his older stuff with The Mothers like We're Only In It For The Money, Uncle Meat, Lumpy Gravy(solo but in the same vein as the mothers),Absolutely Free, and I love all his guitar stuff to like Hot Rats, Apostraphe, Joe's Garage, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, and Overnite Sensation, but Idt he has any
@DavidKinner Dave: is that conjecture that Fripp is re-uniting with Collins or has news of that been posted somewhere? i looked, couldn't find any reference outside of them playing on The Bruised Romantic Glee Club CD. It would be welcomed. While I wasn't a huge fan of the 80's KC through a new-wave filter group, the Belew-Fripp pairing has had it's moments of excellence since. That being said, such an abrupt change of Collins and Jacko IMHO would be good.
@petergrenader Look up A Scarcity Of Miracles. It's their new album it's definitely true i have had it preordered for a month already also type Scarcity..... Into here, they have the song up it's amazing.
@DavidKinner Thank God... King Crimson finally not trying to prove they're heavy. This will definitely be refreshing. Thanks for the tip, Dave. I saw that band in '69 at the Whisky!!!
@drumcatf8 I love them both equally as much but, don't think Crimson played as big a part as you think. I don't even think they are even much alike. You make it sound like if there weren't ever a crimson there wouldn't be tool and I don't see that. And I've heard that King Crimson is Carrey's bigest influence but, I haven't heard the rest of the band second that.
It's really cool that they put the genius guitarist Robert Fripp to open the Tool set. I tried to see King Crimson & Tool together (in L.A.) in 2001 but the tickets were sold out in 15 minutes!
that set list can't be real, it's too long for tool, it only has one song from 10,000 days (if Wings wasn't there it might be more believable and 3 guests in one set? I mean, it would be badass if it was real though!
It's from the Lateralus tour. That's when they toured with Tomahawk.
Before Wings for Marie was completed as a song, the opening guitar part was used as a segue in live shows. I have a recording of on Oklahoma City show where it's used in the same way.

Not really when you consider that the intros and segues are numbered separately.
01. Fripp
02. Tuva/Sober (Intro)
09. Schism (Intro)
11. Parabol
13. Eon Blue Apocalypse
16. Intermission
20. Positive Speech/Wings For Marie (Intro)
All tracks that either do not involve the band playing, are just intros, are short and never played without the following larger piece, etc.
Still an awesome setlist though, better than their current ones IMO. What a great band.
