  • makes me proud to be Irish on my grandma's side, though I have never been there yet.

  • you guys are to serious... boobs

  • FUCK YOUTUBE ADS... good bye

  • @Googlypap get over it - it is what keeps the service free

  • @notamuggle4597 Bullshit, it's just yet an other shitty cash grab. And it's a new devolution from the scum at google.

  • van the man...the best!

  • Best memory was climbing the castle walls, wholly shite to think of it now! Great song as it always brings a tear to my eye, now and on the day we left what seems a hundred years ago! DRUNK, yes, for my feet have never really touched the ground, If y' know what I mean? Bless the music, the poetry, the art. the people...Aye, ya may leave, but ya never really do, do ya?

  • For the Irish must be mad;

    All of the wars are merry;

and all of their songs are sad...

Gods bless the Emerald Isle! You know, The Jameson family leased their land for their distillery, for 9000 years. That's right, nine-thousand years. That was a drunken Irishman that made that deal...

What is the most uselss thing on a woman? A drunken Irishman. I can tell that joke because I 'm Irish... My wife loves that one, I wonder why?

  • What a version of this song, Van is surely the Man!!

  • number 1 in the VANGUARD BEARS TOP 20 THIS WEEK

    well done van the man

  • If you were born in Ireland be it north or south or be you catholic or protestant, you my freinds are Irish so embrace it and enjoy it for many out there wish they were. Van is one of the best

  • If you were born in Ireland be it north or south or be you catholic or protestant, you my freinds are Irish so embrace it and enjoy it for many out there wish they were.

  • I have listened to several artist perform this beautiful song and imho I like Morrison's the best. It gets to you.

  • Loudon Wainwright made this song into an epic.

  • Lovely tune but Van is from East Belfast, Northern Ireland,(not eire or ireland)he can chant alright but what an ignorant miserable prick in concert

  • @ulsterthistle Lol.

  • @ulsterthistle

Yeah and a fine irishman he is. I think the whole 'miserable prick' thing comes from insecurity rather than purpously being grumpy.

  • @RonanD1989 He's from Norn Iron and most definately not insecure, just a pumpous miserable cunt :)

  • Van is Irish. Born in Bllomfield, Belfast. Many Scots/English are the descendents of Irish, Danny. Seems there is a lot of jealousy showing here, people judging as usual with little or no information.

  • A beautiful song and tune,.....this is one of hundreds of arrangements, not bad at all.

  • ill say no more til i get a drink,

i'm drunk today and i'm rarely sober.

  • have you heard.. bryan ferry ..do this...wonderful

  • @lennydylan ..........Ferry is so good at this song, maybe the best ever

  • its so awful D:

  • @Hoddwadd Why do you sign your name that way, original and truthful to the end, I admire that in a mange.

Your Spewdidity will always be welcome here, even when it becomes unbearable.

  • @davidoffon Refer to the above comment.^^^^^^^^^^^

  • nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    listen to your heart.

i am from Belfast,he is so up is own ass.

  • nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    listen to your heart.

  • The best version!

  • I wish I was Irish...

  • The first time I heard it was at John Kennedy Jr's funeral and immediately bought the cd and have never been sorry. I find it so haunting and I guess it's perception how your relate. But I'm glad it's up here . thanks for posting.

  • No one does this song better. The soul of the Irish where sorrow and laughter

run together. He is an Irish Chieftan of a world who has all a drop of the same.

  • @IsisofSophia this is one of the songs Van Morrison not should have done - try to listen to The Dubliners / Jim McCann

  • Amazing that the original Irish version of this song was as comedy, the American Irish version became tragedy, then that version becomes the Irish version. Incredible how songs evolve.

  • Van considers himself Irish. Many Irish are decedents of Scottish/English.

  • Van doing this song? Epic.

  • I first heard this song on the OST from Boardwalk Empire and just couldn't stop listening to it. It went straight to my heart.

  • And I'm rarely sober.....

  • Do you think Van Morrison considers himself Irish? I heard he is descended from Ulster Scots.

  • @Saintliked he was born in Erin...ergo he is Irish by birth. easy

  • @Saintliked well he wrote a song called one irish rover and this comes from an album called irish heartbeat. Its possible that he considers himself both, its highly possible as my father is protestant and considers himself irish.

  • I miss Ireland!!

  • van the man!!!

  • Somewhere in India, the song touches one more heart.

Interestingly, my 8 month old daughter sleeps to the tune.

  • This is so Beautiful...:-)

  • This song makes me think of my grandparents who both sadly passed away last year. I cry tears of happiness though because I had so many wonderful and happy memories of them. R.I.P. x

  • I do not know why this song means so much to me. I am not irish. I am slowenian and swiss. Love is universial. Love from switzerland

  • Wow...Slainte' Mhath...thank you

  • Absolutely beautiful. Can there be a better rendition than this?

  • Love you Dad, Bob Barry, A Bucky Gelder from Carrick, Stephen Madeline and the kids xx

  • chieftains and van the man, must be one of the best collaborations ever. jay-z and linkin park put to shame lol

  • Shame on you, gransoporo. There's enough hatred in the world without your ignorant, hateful comment.

  • God bless Ireland! (and God fuck Italy). I am atheist, but this music is God. I believe in this Music

  • God bless Ireland! (and God fuck Italy). I am atheist, but this music is God. I belive in this Music

  • Why couldn't I be born in a period where good music like this existed rather than awful pop?? This song is unreal!

  • I met Van in Ballyboffey way back when i was a wain along with my uncle Bill.Remember when first the song was released and Them and Van have been dear to my heart ever since.

  • Goddamn what sorrow in his voice

  • ~~~MAGICAL~~~

  • EPIC

  • he would melt a heart of stone

  • Love this song!

  • Love this song!

  • Only Van could do it so well ... and touch ones soul !

  • i listen to this as my granda lies in belfast breathing his last breathes.

  • @eibhlin17

Eibhlin17, eudail. Bless you and your grandparents. I am listening to this in honour of my dear Seumas Breatannach who left this life earlier this year. He loved his Celtic music. We heard Van the Man in Oxford a few years ago and pronounced him good. Seumas and you grandfolk live on wherever and whenever good Celtic music is heard. My heart goes out to you.

    mairiebheag

  • @mairibheagbreatannac Thank you, it is so difficult to be far away. God please bless his soul he passed last Tuesday. I long for the comfort of Ireland or of anything Celtic....thank you for your kind words it really is so hard to let them go...perhaps my granda and lovely Seumas Breatannach are havin a wee Guinness together! Slainte to them!!! Sorry for your loss as well! slan! take care!

  • @eibhlin17 I once spent an adventure on the Doolin coast one fine soft May. It is always in my soul. How I miss Ire.

Beautiful world there on the Isle.

    Lovely thought for your granda.

  • @eibhlin17

touching thank you! I sing each may 5th at my da's graveside as we once sang it together as we walked home from late work in the fields!

  • @eibhlin17

You made me bust out crying! A Toast to your Granda and yer da!

    Sláinte!

  • Well, I've got my money's worth from Van and the Chieftans, so if he wants to remove it, I can't complain. I've listened to this CD hundreds of times over the years and this is the one of the most moving renditions of an Irish song I've ever heard.

  • @annamarie1863 agreed

  • this is awesome, love it when you hear some awesome tune you had no idea existed on a soundtrack. this is imo the best version.

  • Boardwalk Empire introduced this beautifully haunting song to so many

I was lucky to have heard it sung in a Tipperary pub over 30 years ago - by a young american tenor visiting his family's ancestral home - the locals were so gracious and appreciative

thank you for posting - Van really captures it

  • so it on boardwalk empire

  • Nice!

  • Love this Album he did...with The Chieftains..

    Beautiful Magic!..:-)

  • @davidoffon Van doesn't live large, deserves every dime.

  • I remember when JFK Jr died, one of the major tv stations did a tribute to him

with Van's version playing. "My childhood days bring back sad reflections...."

"my boyhood friends and my own relations have all passed on....."

    It was absolutely heartwrenching.

  • Absolutely brilliant! Simply love Van the Man

  • Soooo beautiful. Great to hear VM singing songs from his heritage. This whole album is AWESOME--"Ragland Road" being another amazing performance. Thank you for the post!

  • beautiful.

  • The best!

  • The saddest song I ever heard.

  • @emilebradford

Only by Van .........so well done

  • Sorry to say this was the first time listening to this song....but I want to say, it is beautiful !
