Firstly I suggest you look at the amount of money spent on the moon mission! It is MUCH less than the amount the USA spends or the ESA spends. Feeding people is understandable but you need to realise feeding a country of a billion is no joke. If you do not wish to contribute to Indian charities that is entirely your choice and descicion!
India earns revenue from launching sattelites for other countries! This is obviously used for bettering living conditions.
