That's my problem with Clapton, he always plays so sloppy, you can hear him make all these little mistakes in his licks, but because of the 14 megatons of distortion it's hard to hear... Nah, not for me....
@tjrtherocksponge I would have loved to see Gilmour with the Who, to have played on The Wall and then Quad live, the two best concept albums of the 70's would have been remarkable. I know Joe Walsh was under contract in case the guitarist from the '89 tour had not worked out. Steve Boltz Bolton did some good work though. I know Pete has said Walsh is one of his favorite guitarists.
@korgri The reason I posted my last comment to you was because I thought you were disrespecting Phil Collins as a drummer/ artist, which would not make sense to me, but my guess is that I either misread or misinterpreted your post, so exept my apology if that is the case. I usually don't comment on YouTube at all,but I can get really annoyed by the amount of trash talk and I think ppl who do that should find a hobby or watch and listen to music they DO like.
Did Phil get to sing some Genesis songs, or some of his brilliant solo work, like that gem "Sussudio"? Phil Collins throws in some cute attention-getting fills, thinking the audience is gonna notice: wow, that's Phil on the drums, whoa. Clapton looks at Knopfler: "ah well, it coulda been worse." They could have had whiz-wunderkind John Mayer show up; he saunters out like he expects these guys to rip into 'Gravity' or one of his other very memorable songs. Then McCartney saunters out. ah well
@frankmontis for your edification, mr smart-guy, I invented a brand of synthesizers that brought me wealth, fame and the accolades, admiration, and respect of bouncers, noblemen and ladies fair from here to the lonely hills of far zanzibar.
Leaves me lots of free time to sit around making snappy comments on youtube. Now that takes up all my efforts, and that cure for cancer is waiting on the back burner, thanks to me having to type out replies to the likes of you. Mind if I get back to work?
@korgri Phil did produce an album or two for Eric back in the 80's and toured with Clapton as well. Clapton has played with a wide variety of people over the years. I saw him once and he had this keyboard player that went into left field with a solo that had a few people looking around like WTF? and not in a good way.
@DasGoldenBoy Phil's been in a bit of a pickle lately with some health problems, too. Having trouble holding drumsticks, hope he gets it back. Still has his obsession with the Alamo going strong, so he's got that to keep him occupied. Charlie Watts has a similar thing for the American Civil War. (not kidding about either) Ringo's nub is the Battle of 1812; when the Brits burned the White House.
Any Beatles nut can tell you about him cruising DC at night, trying to picture it all in his head.
@korgri I did not know about any of those drummers obsessions. If it's not a drug or sex related thing it rarely will make the news. I saw something about Phil not to long ago that he was doing some drumming on an album of motown covers. I'm not a huge Phil fan but I hate that the guy is having any physical problem. Abacab and some of the early to mid 80's Genesis I still like.
@DasGoldenBoy the drummer obsession thing is kind of funny, as both Phil and Charlie are so seriously involved in these interests of theirs. Charlie has amassed a huge collection of memorabilia on the Civil War, sometimes you can find pictures of him with all his stuff, it's amazing. I was reading something recently about Phil's other issues, and the article touched on just how deep he takes his Alamo interest. I don't think he's in serious money trouble, lives in Switzerland.
@korgri John Entwistle had some unique hobbies. toy soldiers or something like that. Hey if it keeps a person sane and it isn't illegal. Charlie and Phil have had addictioin issues, so if it keeps them healthy and sober, why not?
The (great) DVD is "Music for Montserrat", you can find it everywhere. Note there is a DTS sound version worth to go in if you have a decent sound system ;-)
Both are freaking great. I've being listening to Clapton & Knopfler for years and they are in my top 5 guitar players but I have to say that Knopfler is better. The best in my opinion: Al Di Meola.
Sheeeeet, you cant even spell his name pinwheel. Look, you've got Collins on drums, plus Mark & Eric giving a masterclass. Just shut up sniping from your abiss of obscurity and enjoy 3 muscial journeymen pouring nectar in your ears at zero cost to you
but what is the definition of a good guitar player then? is it someone who knows a lot of chords and scales or someone who really can touch you and make an impression with his guitar playing
@DasGoldenBoy I guess Pete Townshend really made an impression on Abby Hoffman when Pete 'touched him' with his guitar at Woodstock as Abby tried to interrupt the Who's stage time with some 60's rant. Seeing as how Pete also knows a lot of guitar chords and scales, I guess that puts him in both categories. Maybe similar to how light can be perceived as having the characteristics of both waves and particles simultaneously. Maybe that's what made Pete 'a star'?
@korgri Pete is a great songwriter. He was in a band that could cover any inadequacies he may have had with a guitar. I love The Who but there are better guitarists out there for my money. Some musicians couldn't write a song to pay the rent like the rest of The Who for that matter, Perfect symbiotic relationship.
Respect to Mark Knopfler - the temptation to let rip must have been huge...but he didnt...and thats the sign of a great musician, knowing when to stay quiet...
Different people - different Music. Have You ever heard song ''Meet me''? Same chords going over and over again. Only in the end Clapton start to sing. That's all song. And I like it.
would'nt you rather hear some chord changes? This is the type of stuff beginner guitarists listen to because someone told them clapton is god. At one point I guess I have played like this, but then I moved on
haha wtf?!?!? i think you moved on too soon. as a jazz player, i like to play lots of chord changes, but if you can make a vamp sound good, you can play music. complex is super fun, but simple is harder.
hardly gets any better than this
