These comments that speed is not proof to be equal or better or has no equivalent "emotion" "Feel" to it is plain ignorant. Think about what your saying and grow up. Sure some of those people just run scales fast and its average joe, but surely you can figure out that someone play lead regardless of the generalizes of it being fast can be just as soulful. Look up steffen Schackinger. He put in time and beauty in the carefully selected and times notes he hits. They are fast and slow and soulful.
@KritterMusicFuneral1 On top of what I'm saying this video shows time and emotion, but don't assume that someone else playing fast has any less. If your good you put in your "10,000 hours" If anyone even has any idea what that means and some people learned expression and love for what they play regardless of what is generalized in. Of course this man has more than and of course many others do as well, but god damn...I hope someone understands that anything you say is meaningless.
@KritterMusicFuneral1 Anyone can be soulful with speed or if its done right as well as going slow. Some people just suck at telling the difference and some people suck at actually playing fast and ruin for those who are good at it. I'm a slower player myself, but I keep an open mind. You should too.
Epic is the word for David Gilmour's guitar solos. (Too bad the kids use it to describe everything from a thirty second conversation to a belch.) ;-) Seriously, though, as a guitar player, Gilmour reminds me to focus on the essential.
They played this in 1977 in Philly, at the Spectrum. I was 17 and I was stunned ... the Animals tour. How incredible... Roger Waters walked off the state (rarely told story) because the Philly idiots were being idiots, as usual. (That's why I love em...but, hey, English guys have a thing about people screaming, I guess.) He came back and the concert was incredible (two nights I think)...
i've had thepleasure to see this cat live a handful of times and he is just a total badass. he's classy, like a statesman or something. nobody bends like david.
i play, and after seeing him i always have the feeling that i should just sell all my gear because it seems pointless since i'm so far below him. but i keep trying.
dude's a total stud. too bad him and roger can't stand each other.
Young adults my age have a problem with expand their horizons on music. I grew up listening 2 Floyd,Zeppelin and ACDC. Then I migrated 2 the heavier stuff, but I never 4get how I got there.
There is somthing about this great mans playing. He doesnt show off. He is there to feed you musical notes picked right out of the air. 100% perfect notes. Perfect. David Gilmour is the absolute best guitarist I have ever heard.
i like david gilmour and all, but c'mon! if you want to hear something unique, listen to django. the pentatonic scale is something every mediocre bluseman learns in infancy, and gilmour was never able to wean himself off it
@jarcho123 It's not because pentatonic scale is easy to learn that it is easy to play. This guy is a freaking master, who cares if he is using pentatonic. I mean, just listen to the freaking sound man.
The quality of this song takes so much emotion to write, I don't think there will be any other guitar solo ANYWHERE NEAR the aspects of this song within now and a billion years.
I love how David Gilmour always seems like he's playing at about 90%, and that he's got a secret stash in his back pocket that he saves for later. He almost looks like he should be sipping a cup of tea and reading the paper between notes.
This is pure feeling. All of you lovers of hypertecnical shit trying to cover the soul of this great man, The Lord of the Strings; you who say that they are better than him... you just make me laugh lol
Untouchable; no one even comes close to saying what David says with such economy of notes and depth of feeling. His bends and articulation are a master class on blues-based rock lead guitar - it should be mandatory instruction for every aspiring guitar player. Thanks for setting the bar so high, David!
out of all the guitarists out there, i feel the most emotion from david gilmour's solos. it doesn't matter how fast you play, it matters how much feeling you put into it. just my opinion.
@kdouglas24 Feeling is the key. Perhaps one of the others that would compare would be Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits. The live performances are flowing with feeling and emotion.
He's using EMGs pickups in this guitar. On their website there's a part called EMGTV where there's an little interview about the guitar .. that's how i got to see this ;)
@sbandat90 You are the biggest idiot here! Respect my opinion! your mind must be so empty that you have no brain to discuss anything! you need to say your ideas have offended others. Have brains, man!
@william1theguitarwah true his one note can speak 1000 emotions which even 1000 notes of shredders malmstein, joe, or any metal detath..whatever players can't do
I promise anyone that this solo is equally hard as a Metallica or Dream Theater solo. Trying to play it with as much soul as Gilmour is next to impossible. Just because a solo has only a handful of notes doesn't mean it's not hard to play... David Gilmour stands as a testament to that.
@Jinkzy123 If by dragging you mean getting behind the beat, then thats just his jazz influence. That's what sets him apart from most generic rock guitarists. If you listen to most jazz they'll pull the tune around a fair bit. Otherwise it sounds a bit too mechanical or unmusical without a bit of anticipation
