To tippngthevelvet: Thanks for the info. Upon reading up on Canada's political structure a little more, I have to admit I wasn't aware that Queen Elizabeth II serves as a ceremonial head of state over the Commonwealth Realms that include not only the U.K., but also Canada, Australia, New Zealand, et al. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know that.
Nevertheless, the elected prime minister is the ostensible chief of state, right?
And regardless, "cops = monarchy" is still absurd.

I do feel a little uncomfortable answering a question on Canadian Executive Government as I am not Canadian. The original statements were just patently so ridiculous.
Nevertheless, The Queen is Head of State, represented by her Governor General (chosen by Canada). If you look up the Westminister System of Government, that will answer your questions better than me. It is a very stable form of government, with a lot of checks and balances against the excesses of executive power (seen in the US).

I have not checked where you're from, but I am about to post you an Official Canadian Parliamentary link that really does spell out that Canada is indeed a CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY.

Re the continuing question of Canada being a monarchy: What I meant in my previous comment is that Canada is not a monarchy in the sense of being ruled, authoritatively and on a daily basis, by a hereditary head of state like a king or queen (in the way that, say, Saudi Arabia is). No one ever talks about "the king of Canada" or the "queen of Canada" -- there is no such thing. But yeah, I'll check out that link to see what's meant by "constitutional monarchy."

Funny coincidence that we're talking about this. I have a physical therapist who's from England, and we've been chatting about the U.K.'s govt. and Queen Elizabeth II for a couple weeks. I asked her about this today, and she said that England basically 'cut loose' Canada, Australia, New Zealand and some of its other former territories once they became capable of sustaining themselves w/o Britain's direct involvement and financial support. Since then, the Queen's role has been ceremonial.
