Awesome video! Thanks for sneaking over so we could get a peek. It's so creepy. @InvictusPrayer I was thinking the same thing, it's like alternate disney world.
I would also like to know how the heck you were able to just walk on over there to take a close look when it is closed off, fenced off, and security driving around? Can you say lucky you didnt get nailed with trespassing and have the vid taken from you as well...
To answer your questions on What happend here and why it is not finished... After Sept. 11th Disney put a hault on all opperations going into the building of the resort, and put the money into a chairty fund to help with 9/11. After some time they then would get the ok to go ahead and resume building. However a new plan was proposed that they make it an all new resort called Art of Animation. It does look very cool and will be able to walk from it to PoP across millenium bridge.
Just and update for everybody- I too was sitting in my hotel room at pop century and i spotted these buildings with the 00-40 and became EXTREMELY curious. this video was amazing for something like me. but it is no longer being left alone, it's going to be renevated into a brand new hotel, which i will be staying at. Disney's done it again!
I went before 9/11 and I remember them building this, I remembered it one day and looked it up. It's a pitty. I would have LOVED to book my stay at that part of the hotel. After 9/11 though their visitors dropped a bit. Too much to finish the building. =(
Disney released a press release years ago that due to the 9/11 attacks, there was a drop in tourism and they decided to abandon the project. The Legendary years is now being converted to Art of Animation
They have already started construction back on it. It is going to be a separate resort called the Art of Animation and will be featuring the Disney classics with Themed rooms to match.. Can't wait
I stayed at the Pop Century just last November 2010 and They were constructing this...and when I saw it up close in this video it's just crazy to see it. It's kinda like behind the scenes.
@Nailsdewed I said I heard that you can get arrested for 10 years. The fact of the matter is ive heard diffrent times you can get arrested for. Ive been over there and got caught they gave me a warning and said. "If you go over there again we will have to kick you out" My guess is that after they kick you out you get arrested.
@Nailsdewed That's awesome. Would you be able to send me a message? I can't get to your page. I have totally wanted to work at Disney for years, and I'd love to find out how to go about doing that.
This project was put on hold due to 9/11, and it was never resumed. NOW they are changing it into the Art of Animation resort!!! So exciting~ It will be a value resort, with Little Mermaid, Finding Nemo, Cars, and Lion King themed rooms. Sounds awesome, doesn't it?
I'm a bit confused - with a HUGE franchise like Disney, how did this happen? Was it too far from the park? Was it not sanctioned by Disney? Did it not get enough press? It is creepy, whatever the reason. And what an extreme waste of resources!
@Nailsdewed they just announced this new resort like last month, so I doubt they are going to finish it in 2 months which is really all that is really left of 2010. It was posted on Disney Parks Blog (Disney Parks' Official Blog), and it's listed on the website for Walt Disney World as a upcoming resort. Construction probably won't begin right away since it was JUST announced, but at least it's going to happen. It will be nice to finally have a completed resort there.
They are finally going to demolish them and build a new resort. It was just recently announced as the Art of Animation Resort. If you navigate to the WDW website, you can read more about the newly planned resort.
@wrather Apparently, there is something wrong with your brain; but you probably don't want to see a psychologist either, so I'll leave you to yourself.
wow, close up. cool. I stared at these bldgs from the bridge during our last visit. I thought the 10, 20, etc was for the 2000's. I thought they were on hold for future expansion. Super creepy to see them empty. Thanks for the close up!
@Rayic30 From what I understand, they just never finished it, I think it had to do with the slump in travel after 9/11. A funnier thing about this place, it is built over a small airport that was used by Ultralights (no, not the STOL-Port near TTC that was used for commercial flights to and from WDW), the FAA never received the notice that it was no longer used and to this day is still listed on FAA Sectionals as (Pvt. EPCOT CENTER). Look it up on a site called skyvector.
The Pvt. EPCOT Center that you see on the sectional is actually referring to the helipad which is located in the backstage area of EPCOT which is used for VIP's.I do know there's some construction going on in the back of Pop Century right now.It makes me wonder if perhaps they'll finish those buildings.
@LOTIL62 So this was supposed to be finished a decade ago, to be part of the All Star Resort, but they decided to not finish it? Its so weird to see something half finished like this, and sit for a decade! So this hotel was never opened and used? just never completed? its like a ghost town! LOL It would be interesting to see what Disney has planned for this ad-banded, unfinished hotel!
The legendary years are becoming the new Art of Animation Resort!!! Those existing buildings are going to be Little Mermaid themed!! They are going to build new buildings also that will be family suites!!! Lion King is one..I forget the rest!
The Legendary Years side of Pop Century was never completed because of 9/11. After 9/11, tourism dropped off they couldn't justify finishing this resort.
@TheOnlylatefate i think it's not true... in school i had to make a investigation about those years and for me... that i hate thing who are that old... was intresting... The people have to return to meet the past, specially in something so pretty as it is disney world
@MasterChief2627 He does that area is manifested with snakes and some crocs. Also if a disney employee catches you you can get arrested for about 10 years i heard.
wow its soo creepy looking, although hard to possibly create a full theme for these older eras...the whole art of animation idea at least i guess still goes with the time period....i guess...seeing Disney's cartoons were early 1900s...like 1920s coulda been mickey...
I'm not sure it was just the economy that killed this;sure, the 1920s became famous for its fads and fashions---but what about the 1900-1909 building? What gargantuan catchy slogans do you put on the building? What toys or technology do you blow up to mammoth proportions and put on display?
I'm certainly not saying we started the previous century as a nation of hicks, but I'm not sure pre-WWII America was something that could be represented in this manner.
i was there yesterday on vacation and these buildings were \knocked down except for on. there are sewage pipes being laid out and its under construction now.:)
@whoisstingy when i was there only one or two were gone, when you look on the bridge you'll see one missing in between a building and the hall with the 10-40's signs
Disney's Pop Century resort was intended to have two sections dedicated to the pop culture of the 20th century - The Legendary Years (1900-1940), and the Classic Years (1950-1990). Classic Years has been open since 2003, while construction on Legendary Years was halted in 2001 and never completed, leaving the ghost town shown in this video. Now Disney has decided to build a new resort on that location, but with "Disney's Art of Animation" theming. So the Legendary Years theme has been abandoned.
I dont mean 2 sound stupid i dont quite understand could some one enlightin me from first reading i though the pop century was being rethemed to the disney art animation hotel but now im starting 2 think is this footage of what was meant 2 be a new hotel but the idea has by the looks of things been abandoned some what?
Was there some sort of end of the world I did'nt know about! I stayed at the Pop Centery resort in Disney World FL. like 6 years ago? It can't be abanoned already, it was one of disney best and cheapiest places to stay
@MoonPrincess20 Pop Century is still open and operational and not going anywhere. This footage is of the unfinished legendary years (1900-1950) side of the pop century resort. On May 12 2010 disney reported that the land that these building sit on will become a new value resort called Art of Animation Resort. I stayed at pop century in march and I do agree it is the best value resort.
There is only one Disney World, which is in Florida. There are many Disney Parks - Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Resort Paris and of course the original Disneyland. FinalFantasyFan92 is correct, perhaps you should apologise.
they are re building the place now! It will now be called "disney's art of animation resort". It will theme Cars, Finding Nemo, The little mermaid and more.
I wish they had kept going with this. I would have liked to have seen how it would have turned out. It would have been really cool to have a whole century wrapped into one place.
@leggomyweavo This was planned to be another Pop Century hotel dedicated to 1900-40's (I think), but they stopped building it after 9-11. The building hasn't been used in a while, so I doubt they'll be adding it too soon if they ever try to work on it.
@pychoshow From what I heard on Dis-Boards, the attendance went down after the September 11 bombing, and after that it was economy problems. I guess they're spending more money on movies and merchandising than building more hotels.
They could theme this as the 2000's as part of the Pop Century Resort. No need to fix it up. Put up a lot of "Foreclosed" signs and "Bank Owned" signs. Some beat up SUV's would also work.
This incomplete section of the Pop Century resort will be built upon and reopened in 2012 as Disney's Art of Animation Resort. Construction will begin sometime this year.
Disney is opening up a new resort with Family Suites next to POP Century in 2012! It will be called Disnet's Art of Animation. Finally, it's about time they did something with those buildings that were supposed to be Pop Century: The Legendary Years
Disney is opening up a new resort with Family Suites next to POP Century in 2012! It will be called Disnet's Art of Animation. Finally, it's about time they did something with those buildings that were supposed to be Pop Century: The Legendary Years
They were going to go with 1910 though to 1940 on the other side of the lake however plans were halted as Disney decided to leave that area empty for expansion into the 2000s! Give it time and we will see 2000, 2010, 2020 and so on over there as the years go by and disney needs to expand!
how did you get access over there? there would be disney ppl over there to stop you from going over there. wouldn't there? this is actually kinda scary.
I know this is an older video, last time I went to pop looked about the same over there. Any changes to it's state? Aka are they actually doing anything with it?
Not yet. From what I hear, they planned on waiting until the economy improved before continuing with such a large project when there are others to work on.
Interesting. I always thought this was a strange idea. The 50s -- sure, lots of fun, the 60s -- groovy, the 70s -- far out. But the 10s? Or worse yet, the 30s? Doesn't exactly sound like a fun-filled family vacation.
hey everyone the economic situation started in 2008 NOT 2007 whitch is the year this video was posted so why is everyone saying that its not finished because of the economic situation when this is 1 whole year before the economy crisis!?!?
@JmillerTV This was halted after 9/11 in 2001, if I recall correctly. Disney took a huge hit in attendance then and is just now getting back to where they need to restart expanding.
all i have to say is when i just booked a stay for me and my family last week i asked about hte family suites and the disney cast member said witch ones i was not aware that there was more then one set and she said that you mean the ones at the allstars
I saw this in 05 and it looks no different now. What a shame. Isnt this prime real estate in Orlando? Arent they letting it go to waste?? Whats the story? Why would disney just dump it??????????????
one question though, how do you get there?Me and my wife only saw it from the bridge over the lake....don't remember seeing a pathway continuing over to that side of the resort...
Don't ask me how I know this, but if you follow the lake path to the north, you could work your way around the fencing just as the pathway ends into the parking lot. It's a trick but you should be able to do it. But I'm not saying you should do it. I'm just sayin.
hmmm interesting..."im not going to do it" but it would be fun to explore...what are they gonna do?Kick me out because it's not fenced off properly?LoL
@Nicklepa23 construction was stopped sometime after 9/11 when tourism slowed down. right now there isn't a need for them to continue construction, and would likely have to be rebuilt considering how long it's been un attended
Idk if you havent noticed but they need the extra hotel space. They have been pretty full over the past year and even built 3 new resorts, bay lake, and the ak villas jambo house and kidani village.
They'll eventually be finished but it would be as family suites.
@sfkkonline huh? first, those three hotels you just mentioned are strictly for DVC holders, so not open to the public.
The only reason they're able to sell out the hotels is because of the major discounts they have been offering the past year or so. if they weren't doing that the hotels wouldn't be filled anywhere near what they are now.
@sfkkonline one more thing, did you notice the entire framework has been put up? what's there now are not just family suites. that means they'd basically need to tear down the whole building to do what you're claiming... and yea, if you stay at a disney hotel for 5nights they give you a $750 gift card. they're not hurting..?? they're begging you to book at their hotels...
Are you just ignorant or what? I didnt see the All-star's resorts torn down to add the family suites. I mean if your going to start on that subject then please check the facts. And no they arent strictly for DVC holders. If they was alot of rooms would be empty. When we was doing our recent trip we almost reserved bay lake and we arent DVC.
Nevermind you just dont understnad anything related to business. at all. follow this up in a new comment.
@sfkkonline you sir, are an idiot, and can't write comprehensive English. check up on your facts, because you obviously don't know. you think you know, but you really don't
Well obviously WDW doesnt need those deals. They offer discounts sure but they've always done that. And why not? Its perfect business sense. The customer saves money theyre more likelyt o buy stuff int he park, more likely to make dining reservations, and get longer park hoppers and other added amenities since they are saving money. Yet they still make money off this stuff. Same reason theres discounts on store items; people are more likely to buy more of it.
@sfkkonline do you live in America? are you aware of the economic situation right now? let me simplify it for you. Bad economy means people aren't going on vacation, which means Disney doesn't have the attendance they once did, which means they need to offer deep discounts for people to come back. simple bus 101 my friend
Maybe you didnt check your facts again. Disney reported increased attendance, Six Flags reported increased attendance and Cedar Fair reported an increase. Maybe your just oblivious to the truth. And yeah i do live in the states, and i got to disney every year. I know my facts, and i ahvent said anything that isnt supported by the truth. Apparently you didnt keep tabs on the family suite idea at the All-star resort a few years back.
I agree,we went last year and they looked the same....don't think they have any plans on finishing that part of the resort anytime soon...going again Mar 2011,ill let you know lol...
wow they were working on this when i was there in 2005 and one of the employees said that it was going to be the pre 50s side. i was thinking that surely by 2010 it would be finished so i came looking...thats disappointing.

wow its soo creepy looking, although hard to possibly create a full theme for these older eras...the whole art of animation idea at least i guess still goes with the time period....i guess...seeing Disney's cartoons were early 1900s...like 1920s coulda been mickey...

So creepy...and sad.
shadowplayer1980 1 year ago
I'm not sure it was just the economy that killed this;sure, the 1920s became famous for its fads and fashions---but what about the 1900-1909 building? What gargantuan catchy slogans do you put on the building? What toys or technology do you blow up to mammoth proportions and put on display?
I'm certainly not saying we started the previous century as a nation of hicks, but I'm not sure pre-WWII America was something that could be represented in this manner.

i was there yesterday on vacation and these buildings were \knocked down except for on. there are sewage pipes being laid out and its under construction now.:)

@Pilsberrydoughboy11 You're on crack. I was just there until August 11 and all of these buildings were still there.
whoisstingy 1 year ago
@whoisstingy when i was there only one or two were gone, when you look on the bridge you'll see one missing in between a building and the hall with the 10-40's signs

I stayed at Pop century a few years ago and remember seing these buildings 'under construction' , its a shame they were never finnished

Was there some sort of end of the world I did'nt know about! I stayed at the Pop Centery resort in Disney World FL. like 6 years ago? It can't be abanoned already, it was one of disney best and cheapiest places to stay
MoonPrincess20 1 year ago
@MoonPrincess20 Pop Century is still open and operational and not going anywhere. This footage is of the unfinished legendary years (1900-1950) side of the pop century resort. On May 12 2010 disney reported that the land that these building sit on will become a new value resort called Art of Animation Resort. I stayed at pop century in march and I do agree it is the best value resort.

There is only one Disney World, which is in Florida. There are many Disney Parks - Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Resort Paris and of course the original Disneyland. FinalFantasyFan92 is correct, perhaps you should apologise.

did this used to be an actual hotel owned by disney or is it a unfinished construction project soon to open?
leggomyweavo 1 year ago
@leggomyweavo This was planned to be another Pop Century hotel dedicated to 1900-40's (I think), but they stopped building it after 9-11. The building hasn't been used in a while, so I doubt they'll be adding it too soon if they ever try to work on it.
CheshireCatForever 1 year ago
@CheshireCatForever why did they stop building it? are they stupid theyd make so much money!
pychoshow 1 year ago
@pychoshow From what I heard on Dis-Boards, the attendance went down after the September 11 bombing, and after that it was economy problems. I guess they're spending more money on movies and merchandising than building more hotels.
CheshireCatForever 1 year ago
This is actually gonna be a new resort.
Called Disney's Art of Animation.
metroid567 1 year ago
They could theme this as the 2000's as part of the Pop Century Resort. No need to fix it up. Put up a lot of "Foreclosed" signs and "Bank Owned" signs. Some beat up SUV's would also work.

Aka are they actually doing anything with it?
carnini 1 year ago
@carnini
Not yet. From what I hear, they planned on waiting until the economy improved before continuing with such a large project when there are others to work on.
chitoryu12 1 year ago
Interesting. I always thought this was a strange idea. The 50s -- sure, lots of fun, the 60s -- groovy, the 70s -- far out. But the 10s? Or worse yet, the 30s? Doesn't exactly sound like a fun-filled family vacation.
ebateman21 1 year ago
@ebateman21 that's exactly why it's still empty. they are working on a different theme.

hey everyone the economic situation started in 2008 NOT 2007 whitch is the year this video was posted so why is everyone saying that its not finished because of the economic situation when this is 1 whole year before the economy crisis!?!?
JmillerTV 1 year ago
@JmillerTV This was halted after 9/11 in 2001, if I recall correctly. Disney took a huge hit in attendance then and is just now getting back to where they need to restart expanding.

one question though, how do you get there?Me and my wife only saw it from the bridge over the lake....don't remember seeing a pathway continuing over to that side of the resort...
TheMadness323 1 year ago
Don't ask me how I know this, but if you follow the lake path to the north, you could work your way around the fencing just as the pathway ends into the parking lot. It's a trick but you should be able to do it. But I'm not saying you should do it. I'm just sayin.
bruhe 1 year ago
@bruhe
hmmm interesting..."im not going to do it" but it would be fun to explore...what are they gonna do?Kick me out because it's not fenced off properly?LoL

when will it be open? I can't find anymore info on it then this video
Nicklepa23 1 year ago
@Nicklepa23 construction was stopped sometime after 9/11 when tourism slowed down. right now there isn't a need for them to continue construction, and would likely have to be rebuilt considering how long it's been un attended
vistaway3008 1 year ago
Idk if you havent noticed but they need the extra hotel space. They have been pretty full over the past year and even built 3 new resorts, bay lake, and the ak villas jambo house and kidani village.
They'll eventually be finished but it would be as family suites.
sfkkonline 1 year ago
@sfkkonline huh? first, those three hotels you just mentioned are strictly for DVC holders, so not open to the public.
The only reason they're able to sell out the hotels is because of the major discounts they have been offering the past year or so. if they weren't doing that the hotels wouldn't be filled anywhere near what they are now.
vistaway3008 1 year ago
@sfkkonline one more thing, did you notice the entire framework has been put up? what's there now are not just family suites. that means they'd basically need to tear down the whole building to do what you're claiming... and yea, if you stay at a disney hotel for 5nights they give you a $750 gift card. they're not hurting..?? they're begging you to book at their hotels...
vistaway3008 1 year ago
Are you just ignorant or what? I didnt see the All-star's resorts torn down to add the family suites. I mean if your going to start on that subject then please check the facts. And no they arent strictly for DVC holders. If they was alot of rooms would be empty. When we was doing our recent trip we almost reserved bay lake and we arent DVC.
Nevermind you just dont understnad anything related to business. at all. follow this up in a new comment.
sfkkonline 1 year ago
@sfkkonline you sir, are an idiot, and can't write comprehensive English. check up on your facts, because you obviously don't know. you think you know, but you really don't
vistaway3008 1 year ago
Well obviously WDW doesnt need those deals. They offer discounts sure but they've always done that. And why not? Its perfect business sense. The customer saves money theyre more likelyt o buy stuff int he park, more likely to make dining reservations, and get longer park hoppers and other added amenities since they are saving money. Yet they still make money off this stuff. Same reason theres discounts on store items; people are more likely to buy more of it.
sfkkonline 1 year ago
@sfkkonline do you live in America? are you aware of the economic situation right now? let me simplify it for you. Bad economy means people aren't going on vacation, which means Disney doesn't have the attendance they once did, which means they need to offer deep discounts for people to come back. simple bus 101 my friend
vistaway3008 1 year ago
Maybe you didnt check your facts again. Disney reported increased attendance, Six Flags reported increased attendance and Cedar Fair reported an increase. Maybe your just oblivious to the truth. And yeah i do live in the states, and i got to disney every year. I know my facts, and i ahvent said anything that isnt supported by the truth. Apparently you didnt keep tabs on the family suite idea at the All-star resort a few years back.

wow they were working on this when i was there in 2005 and one of the employees said that it was going to be the pre 50s side. i was thinking that surely by 2010 it would be finished so i came looking...thats disappointing.
