The right to assisted suicide is a fundamental part of self-ownership. @nick21sammy I was just talking to someone about this-I didn't realize it was legal in Switzerland. That's a good, humane and progressive thing. If someone is terminal and sufferring with NO chance of recovery, just laying there drugged with morphine and is out of it mentally anyway, that is a decent thing to do. I know Gov'ts worry about abuse but it should only be used when it's clear there is no alternative as happens in your country. Maybe the rest of the world will catch on some day.
That doctor is seriously retarded. He said the same thing Craig Ewert said in the documentary, but what if Craig was one of those that wasn't going to have a peaceful death because of his condition? I say that if someone chooses to end their life, so be it. I actually saw this..It was a beautiful presentation...He made sure in his head and heart and soul that he was ready, and once you get yourself straight you should be allowed to do what you will with YOUR life. It was on PBS about 3 months ago here in the US. It was heart wrenching to watch, but it was also difficult to watch him struggle literally for every breath. May God have mercy on his soul.
If you don't wish to be put on machines to keep you alive in the event of a catastrophe or sudden eminent fate of death, make sure you have DNR orders in effect for yourself. In fact, it is best to keep a DNR card on you as well because once you are put on a machine, you cannot be taken off until either you don't need it anymore or you die.
I agree, these poor ppl have been through sooo much, much more than most of us can imagine and if it comes to a point where a person can't breathe, walk, talk, or do any of the other million things ppl do in their everyday life without having extreme pain, let them go & let them go THEIR way, a dignified way. Euthanasia is a right that I think every person should have, if they become critically ill and are no good to themselves and are only becoming worse, then it is their right to wish to die. @nick21sammy I was just talking to someone about this-I didn't realize it was legal in Switzerland. That's a good, humane and progressive thing. If someone is terminal and sufferring with NO chance of recovery, just laying there drugged with morphine and is out of it mentally anyway, that is a decent thing to do. I know Gov'ts worry about abuse but it should only be used when it's clear there is no alternative as happens in your country. Maybe the rest of the world will catch on some day.

It's interesting how, as Americans, we are fed all those lines about 'freedom' and yet we aren't allowed the freedom to decide how we want to expire.
Maybe your preference is to suffer, and make those around you suffer, and that's fine. But not everyone sees it that way. So the choice is to have a physician assist you in your death or take it in to your own hands. Like many do every day.

I actually saw this..It was a beautiful presentation...He made sure in his head and heart and soul that he was ready, and once you get yourself straight you should be allowed to do what you will with YOUR life. It was very breathtaking and interesting. I appreciate being able to look at life with a better understanding after seeing someone else point of view. Makes me understand why my grandfather didnt fight the cancer. And if it makes just one person get it, then its was worth making.

If you don't wish to be put on machines to keep you alive in the event of a catastrophe or sudden eminent fate of death, make sure you have DNR orders in effect for yourself. In fact, it is best to keep a DNR card on you as well because once you are put on a machine, you cannot be taken off until either you don't need it anymore or you die.

The minute tv channels are prohibited from airing such material we should all throw our tv's out the window! No channel should be censured for having the courage to debate such subjects,& this programme was in no way a 'ratings grabber' nor was it 'sensationalist'.Our government has already 'nannied' us into quiet sumbission in many areas.Being able to choose what we view is one of the few areas where government really ought to butt out.We have the on/off switch on our tv,that's all we need!

I think Dr. Kavorkian imo helps people who need it... He kills people who want to die I think that if you want to die and have a vailid reasion such as a painful terminal illness you should be able to have yourself killed in a humain way...
Its more cruel to keep a burn victom who will ultimatly die in the burn center alive for 8 months to suffer... Or a person suffering with cancer etc etc... Or how about people paralized waist down... Its evil to let them live.

Euthanasia is a right that I think every person should have, if they become critically ill and are no good to themselves and are only becoming worse, then it is their right to wish to die. Denying them that is cruelty of the highest order, how dare anyone tell these people who are in so much physical and emotion pain that they aren't allowed to die.

I never understood the argument about how suicide is selfish, you have no idea what any person is going through when they think of such a thing, they are already in another state of existance for that thought to even occur. are they selfish, or are you because you would rather them suffer (mentally or physically) so that you will not miss them? Hell is probably not real, but pain certainly is.

@LostProphet03 exactly, people who have decided to end their own lives because of mental/physical pain and the complete absence of hope are expected to suffer so that friends and relatives can have peace of mind...
suicide is seen as a sign of weakness, and a "permanent solution to a temporary problem" by people who like to make generalisations so that they can feel safe...
they fail to see that the world is a complicated unpleasant place, where pain comes in all shapes and sizes...
