They started off as 3 or 4 different genre's, Hardcore, Trance, House and Techno (yes, it's actually a sub genre, not a genre).

Obviously some of those are older than others. Techno and Trance being the oldest, drawing their roots back as early as the 70's.

Hardstyle is an evolution of trance, though you can barely hear it now.
