actually, monaco was closer to italy than to france. it was surrounded by the kingdom of piemont and the ppl speak a ligurian dialect ("monegasco") beside french. but with the cession of the nizzardo to france in 1860, monaco came under french influence. ironically, italy had to "pay" the home region of garibaldi and the one of the savoias to france as price for the french support of the risorgimento
