They use a low gear so it's not hard to go uphill so of course I go faster than them to maintain my rpms. Sure "real" road bikers go faster than me, no doubt about that. But they ride for another reason and they are nowhere to be seen when it's snowing...

I feel a bit safer on them in traffic(with platforms, not my SPD's) since I can ride on the top of my bars, get good vision, and not have to change positions to brake lightly. For around town use they're amazing(high speed/acceleration, decent turning[better with the spd pedals), but light weight for carrying into the apartment/house/etc), but on country roads...well that's why I bought the Fargo.

I have yet to have a fixie pass me and my 24-speed up; this guy looks alot like one of the fools I smoked the tires off of on my way through downtown Denver. Just like with a car, you gotta' have gears if you want the best performance; autos just don't cut it in the car world just like fixies don't cut it in the bike world.

@crashercrusty101 It's not about being fast. I ride singlespeed because I grew up riding BMX and derailleurs are just a pain. Switching to a lower gear and spinning my ass off is just so much more boring than having to nut up and climb in the only gear I've got.

If they had to be on the road for 8-10 hours every day in all weather conditions, like I do, they would be in trouble more often than me though. Gears fuck up sooner or later. If you are a bike messenger, you don't want to spend time and money on gears. If you live in a flat city and use clipless pedals, then you really don't need gears. It's just a hyped up way to be lazy.
