I'm thinking of getting some dwarf hamsters. Basically i want a small fury mammal pet. I had mice when i was a kid but remember them smelling a bit. I want a rat but they need a much bigger cage than i have room for so i opted for the dwarf hamster.

My only concern is how "pet-able" they are? I want a little pet i can play with and stroke etc, like a syrian hamster or a rat, can anyone let me know if i'll be able to play with them or will they just run off if i get them out of the cage???

dwarf hamsters are very tame and can be handled quite easily once used to you.

as you r looking for one that you can have a lot of interaction with i would reccomend the chinese dwarf hamster as they are extremely cute and are slower than other sorts. however, dont get a robroski dwarf hamster as they are very quick and are not the best to handle. also, male chinese dwarf hamsters prefer to live in pairs or groups, but females tend to fight and prefer to live alone. up to you how u do it. x x

Dont listen to iluvs56789, cotton can kill a hamster, since they tend to eat it (which they can choke on it). And no, I dont think the hamster will get hurt, but you need to turn in the male, or put them in seperate cages. If that happens, then get another male for the male hamster so he wont become alone (same for the female if you plan to give the babies away).

I've had two brothers for a year since they were five weeks old and they've got on fine, even though one is much bigger. When they were small they used to both run in the wheel at the same time; though not always in the same direction. Chinese dwarf hamsters will fight, however, so keep them apart.

in order to raise the dwarfs together, you really need to make sure that you find a petstore that has hamsters that are under the age of 10 weeks. They don't have to be brothers, but that would help. They need to be young enough so they aren't reaching sexual maturity and feel that they have to be dominant with each other. As far as fighting, there will always be behavior that looks like wrestling, it's a natural part of their growing, but not if there's biting and blood involved.

on and by the way, my 10 year old daughter and I are hobby breeders. We have 63 currently. You're also best looking for local hobby breeders. You really want hamsters that have been handraised. The hamsters you will find at the big chain petstores are older, usually at least 12 weeks, and they haven't been handled by people at all. That's how dwarfs get the reputation of being horrible biters. Find a locally owned petstore and speak to the people there, they can help you.
