Dude Diesels in Rangers are pretty rare. You ought to just keep it and put it in car shows. I like regular 4 cylinders really, 'cause it's American. Diesels came from Japan.
The 4spd in these trucks is worthless. Not sure what Ford was thinking (they werent) at the time. But in 1984 a 5spd was a little known extra cost option that most people didnt get sad to say.
the 5spd was great to have with the v6 and maybe 2.3l gasoline I4 but it would almost never if ever go into 5th with the 2.2l and probably 2.3l diesel.
Trust me the 2.2 diesel needed the 5spd and most never got it. Thats why most Mazda diesels blew up in Rangers because they screamed at 70 MPH in 4th. Ive owned Mazda diesels in both trucks and the 5 spd makes a world of differance on the highway.
ACTUALLY that engine is all MAZDA built under license from Perkins. Ive had 25 years experience with them and it was one of the best damn 4cyl diesels ever built. I drove an 83 Mazda 579,000 miles with one of them in it.
ChaChiVooDoo is correct. These little oil burners last FOREVER. A friend's dad had one that had close to 400,000 miles on it when he sold it recently. Wish I could have bought it from him...

that buzzer sounds like my 1986 Ford Mustang LX hatchback, but twice as annoying.

this is a damn shame when Ford stopped making the Ranger Diesel. They should make a Power Stroke version of it.
DieselMikey084 4 years ago
it sounds like a Japanese diesel engine but it's not. This is a Ford 2.2-liter 4-cylinder in it.
DieselMikey084 4 years ago
The ford 2.2l diesel was actually bought from mazda for these trucks. Mazda did not build the motor themselves either, they were built by perkins.
tutheck 4 years ago
It depends on the year of the truck, if it's a 1985 or newer it has a 2.3L mitsubishi turbo diesel.
Deadlywindex 4 years ago
83-84 was Mazda and 85-87 was Mitsubishi but that engine sucked badly compared to the bullet proof Mazda.
