I think he was the only one that can pull off just one guitar in the group he played such a monster rhythm guitar and lead at the same time would have love to see him live.
it's lucky that this great live recording was made. It's better than the studio version. I really wish this one, would have been captured on video as some of the other songs in the set were.
Technically he's in the key of F, but when you tune your guitar a 1/2 step lower across the board, then physically you're in F#, a great guitar key btw! ;)
@zeppelinrocks100 that's an interesting point. i read once that one of his roadies picked up his guitar and said 'shit man, it's so out of tune'. apparently he only needed the guitar to be approximately tuned and then he'd bend the strings to the right pitch. he must have had a fantastic ear.
@zeppelinrocks100 Great ears and mastery of string bending. Apparently Jeff Beck used to deliberately go onstage with his guitar out of tune when he was bored with the yardbirds, just to make it more interesting. Also, on most guitars, certain chord shapes and parts of the neck will be in tune when others are out.
This is incredible! One of my fave tracks off his debut album. With the overdubs on the record i wouldnt have thought it could have been replicated as well live but fuck me Jimi's playin is amazing here. He could do anything he wanted. And yes Vai and Satriani, as good as they are, will never play guitar as raw and magic as this...
Lol I love how all of his bootlegs start with "I'm out of tune give me a minute". I guess its what happens when you rape the tremolo arm on each song.
@Rebel4evermore Getting busted going into a trip is no fun! I got searched and questioned by the cops coming up on 2CB (Which is like Acid and Ecstasy combined) it fucked my whole trip up and made me paranoid as fuck. Psychedelics are only good if you know no bad vibes are gonna take place within the duration, like at home or at a trusted friends house. In the right setting they're the best intoxication known to mankind.
@6402680 This sounds like his Monterey Pop Festival set in an actual movie film shown in 1968 and or 1969. It had the burn your Strat scene with the crotch rubs grinding the Strat into the speakers, then he lit the sucker up with lighter fluid. Mama Cass was sitting in the audience slack jawed like everybody else. This was actually in a movie about Monterey when I saw it.
Hendrix was a force of nature! His guitar playing has the smouldering power of volcanos.... the rumble of oncoming storms..... the soaring quality of an albatros blasting over ocean spray!!!
hendrix on lsd, stoned and drunk could play better than sober cunts like steve vai. i wonder what steve vai would look like if he dropped acid just before a gig, i think he'd be so scared he wouldnt even be able to pick up his guitar
@ynkysrbest Acid behaves differently on each person. I dont have any trouble playing on acid, and Jimi didnt have either, as we can confirm on many of his famous concerts. It gives me a kind of illuiminated fluency and opens new ways that Id never explored before on the guitar. Have you ever tried it? The only thing that doesnt work for me to play is psylocibin.
@gypsysunerainbow i have tried it, i couldn't play very well, i couldn't concentrate on one thing, everything intrigued me...i plan on doing it again and recording myself playing and see how i do this time around..also plan on doing peyote in the near future
@gypsysunerainbow I agree with you I can I almost play better on acid. I think the only problem with playing on it is sometimes you kind of get your mind blown by other things going on in your plane of view if you take enough, haha.
this song is more heartfelt & biographical then most realize.written in his hand to mouth days ('65-'66)in the village. he knew then his mind/talents was sitting on a fountainhead that no one & i mean no one could touch. yet, alas out all alone w/ no contracts & only food dimes. stop & imagine your self w/ prophetic musical/lyrical vision as such yet walls all around u. get that & get a glimpse of heart of this song. hence the volcano of emotion in this 1st breakthru performances to the masses.

Reply | Spam it was a joke, becuase he was so damn smart that people never understood him, so they thought he was always on drugs, but he wasnt
Being 'smart' has nothing to do with it, per se. Jimi Hendrix had a very atypical way of articulating his thoughts...it's very difficult for me to describe...but it was really cool.
I think the reason why they didnt release the video of him playing this song was cause they used it for his intro in the monterey pop film... kind of a big bummer, if you ask me
how could you not film jimi in this song... if i was a camera man, i wouldn't stop filming jimi until he gets in his limo and drives away... prolly would chase him too...
This is the best version of Can you see me.Up tempo feel really gives it an edge over the studio version.Pity it's not on the Monterey video.I wonder if it's available anywhere.
"Fire" live at Winterland is another ripper track that springs to mind.I think Jimi was ay his best playing live."Like a rolling stone" at Monterey is yet another killer song.
this dude lives on here on earth I wonder sometimes is he stuck here on earth and can't go on his trail to be with his mother and dude may the creator be with you on your trail.
I wore my album out. You're right its definitely from Monterey Pop. I just finished watching Jimi Hendrix, An American Landing on WLIW and it was his set at Monterey but I was very disappointed that this was the only song that they did not show. Although his performance of Wild Thing is legendary, I would rather have seen the video of Can You See Me.
It awesome just listening to the guitar-tuning! wicked lol...

this live version is way cooler, and faster than the studio version. the few seconds at 2:05 are so awesome.
