Cool.. I had a grandfather that was a deck hand on a ship in the north sea. He would talk about the storms. They used smaller ships. Back then. This gives a good perspective. he used to always talk about a time another ship lost all power during a storm and they towed it back to port. he said most of the time they towed the ship they didnt see it because of heavy sea's. They all made it back safely. Good vid..
This was a good job for us young men, I was 15 when I first went out in boats like this when I left school and we thought we would live forever.. we laughed at the harsh conditions!
Steel Trawlers out of Lowestoft 120 feet max, 10 day trips. Strange though I now live not far from Arbroath.. ...
I just ripped ass while watching this video and started laughing. But then I moved the laptop off my lap to see my mom going "eww oh my god thats disgusting" and my other brother coughing.
Good music & rough seas!! What's the AH for? Awww Hell it's rough weather again!! North Sea is bad, like the North Atlantic & the Great Lakes - shorter distance between the crests of waves, a higher wave frequency and that = pounding and troughing out in the bottom of a wave trough. Glad I am dry & a landlubber.
@BaranovV, Yes, the graphics are very good in the E. Hemingway video you posted link to. I was towed across a small inland lake by a large snapping turtle (maybe 75 - 100-pounds or so) or a large northern gar Pike (maybe 2-2.5m or so), never did find out what it was since my 20lb. line eventually broke. Search on Youtube for: 'Deadliest Catch' videos - crabbing on the Bering Sea, the vids. are wild as are the seas & the crabbers themselves are very brave & a bit nuts.
@BaranovV, PS: don't send me any more vids. because I start the cancer treatments soon, & am having an operation to put in a 'shunt' in my left chest that allows injections of chemical treatments & drawing out of blood samples etc. instead of always having my veins pierced by needles to do this. I will probably become somewhat sick because of chemicals & radiation treatment so I will have to rest a lot. I'll find out soon. You know, some of the largest waves ever recorded have been off Ireland.
@christof139 Give the God to you health. You the courageous person, do not lose optimism. Though you and not Orthodox pray to the God, that it(he) would forgive to you your sins, " the pagan you whether or not ", to you it becomes easier. Recollect mum even if you die you you will meet there expensive(dear) and close people. Fasten. Though words - not the best assistant in such situations. Know, that in far Russia know that you suffer, and the God especially.
@BaranovV, Brave? No, I am more disgusted at myself & life at times rather than brave. I made my peace with God many years ago I hope God remembers some of the people's lives I saved & helped saved etc. & some other decent things I've done rather than a few negative things I've done. Chances are I will beat the cancer with the medical treatments, but you never know, & if I go, oh well, is the way it will be & it doesn't bother me all that much because the world is a crazy place as I well know.
@christof139 The world became such after sin-fall. Men began to extract earnings in sweat, women began to give birth in flours (torments), animals began to devour each other and so on. These are the elementary trues of Christianity...
@BaranovV, After Adam & Eve ate the apple as suggested by Satan. Hence, the problems of mankind, the human race were born. So, it is a matter of choice wheter to try & be a decent person or not.
@christof139 Your idea is clear to me. On this idea the answer in Christianity for a long time is given. Believe - on everything, you are absolute on all questions will find answers in Orthodox Christianity.
@christof139 AH is for Arbroath, the boats port of registry. It is a town on the east coast of scotland between dundee and aberdeen. It once had a large fishing fleet but now there are only a few dozen creel boats working there. Most of the fleet has been sold or decommissioned like the June Rose in 1997.
@captainwull, Thanx for explaining the 'AH'. It is bad news that yet more people have lost their livelyhoods due to crappy economic conditions. I live in Detroit, Michigan, USA & we have been taking a beating for the last 30-years or so. Hopefully things will pickup all over.
@christof139 Politicians and environmentalists messing about with the fishing industry over here is what brought about its demise. When fish were scarce prices were good and the wholesalers knew they had buyers for their products.Everyone made money. Now fish are plentiful, the markets are over supplied, prices poor and the wholesalers have to cut each others throats to sell their products. no one makes anything.
@captainwull, Seems to be cyclic in nature, economics, supply & demand. However, if there were no fish there would be no fishing & fish frys & bakes, so the Enviro people do have some positive input & impact at times when they don't go to extremely whacky over a long term. Politicians; most are concerned only about themselves.
@bevarooo Nice of you to post post it Bev. Came across it by chance. Brings back a lot of good memories. Me and Joe are in the wheelhoose the time of Neil filming.
Ask Joe aboot the big wave we hit a few hours later......probably the biggest lump of water we ever saw. thought we were doomed.
Did this boat use to visit Lerwick on Shetland? I'm sure I have seen her there some years ago.. Have been there a few times to refuel or to deliver fish.. It's not so far from my homeplace in Norway. Nice video!
@UT740 Yes we visited Shetland many times. We also visited Norway many times when the weather was bad. Mostly Skudenshaven and Kopervik on the island of Karmoy and Egersund further south.
great wee video, i was on the Silvery Sea OB 245 about this time 20 years ago , brings back good and bad memories and makes me feel glad to be alive.. thanks
tanks for the updated info.. always sad to hear of the loss of another vesel and a man..the June Rose looks to be a well founded vessel in this video from 95,can't imagine why they would scap heer to years later...what's the tune???
The tune is the shoals of herring, but am no sure who its by, the clancy brothers springs to mind but maybe I am wrong.
The June Rose was a cracker of a boat but she was almost 40 years old when I decomissioned her. I was 35 at the time and she was never going to last me a lifetime at sea. I tried to donate her to a local museum and had sponsors set up to maintain her but the council did'nt want her so she was cut up. Shame really.
@captainwull A shame the June Rose is not with you anymore, a mighty nice looking vessel. My lobster boat Mithril is now 32 years old and has always needed a helping hand. Got to love wooden boats.
It was shot from the Seine netter Sharridale about 1995. We had just had a haul close to the Brae oil feild in the North sea apprx 120ml north east of peterhead for very poor and were shifting fishing grounds. The June Rose was built in 1961 and decommisioned in 1997.
A few months after this film was shot the Sharridale was sunk after being in collision with an oil supply vessel, one man drowned. It was the person who posted the video's brother.
Absolutely fantastic footage... makes my blood a little thicker just watching. Also Fantastic choice of tunes... I wish you could have gotten more of the song on the video. The Shoals of Herring is one of my favorite Makem/Clancy brothers songs, and this is a version I have not heard before.
