This is the rare occurrence that you will find Prince allowed one of his songs posted on Youtube. He is a great performer and I hope one day he allows them all to be played.
Prince is the only black man I've found attractive. Talent and uniqueness is a huge turn on, Prince is by far the most talented artist I've ever come across and so different
did he lip this? If you haven't seen "the Christ" formerly the cross and purple rain from rave unto the year 2000 it's worth it 2 of the best guitar solos ever! how does he do it? Him and Larry Graham made a perfect rendition of this and the solo in purple rain is like none you've seen before, how do I save this?
@Mizvision do you know how I can get a copy of "love sign" he did on the today show with nona gaye Bryant Gumble introduced him. it's much better then the album version and Mayte is looking quite nice. I think it was late 90's or early 2000

Tell him Ken!
This clip is both exhilarating and depressing at same time because the music that was being made by Prince and other artists back at this time was so ALIVE and INTERESTING musically (instrumentation, arrangements, etc) but today all of that sense of craft and creativity seems to have been lost or left behind. I was familiar with his material after Dirty Mind but never heard his second album until the late 90s and was blown away (such an amazing balance of pop, rock, ballads, and R+B). Genius.
To all you who thinks that Dez rocks on guitarr.. It´s a playback... And as you all know it was Prince who played all ther instruments on the first records.. So, sorry Dez lovers.. He didn´t play that rif.. It was Prince....
ahhhh bak when lip-syncing "live" was not frowned upon.... those were the days ;) I never noticed prince is kinda bow-legged before I saw this. Any compliments given to the band members in this performance are moot due to the fact that what you're hearing is straight from the studio recording where prince performed pretty much all the tracks himself.
@frankiestage ..he shouldve been much, much bigger. He needed to get a distribution deal that wouldve allowed him to do films as well...but what happened was that Madonna became the sexual star and was able to convert the dance music via videos...Prince completely could not get that image over...Jim Brown wanted a major deal to develop black artists, and was going to team with Richard Pryor to create Indigo, which wouldve been the Motown of Hollywood...Brown thought Prince would launch it.
@SuperOmnicron , uh dude, Prince had ten platinum albums and thirty Top 40 singles during his career. He won seven Grammy Awards,a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. I think people try to put him in a category of pop and he defied that. He also had a very different persona off stage , and was not considered ad friendly. He is a jehovah's witness, and has a much different group around him. I do know he got screwed by Warner Bros.
I'm not knocking, Dez, but I thought Prince wrote, arranged, composed and produced all his music back then...meaning, he wrote the guitar riff for Dez to play.
@kendpurest nah bro you got it wrong! watch Prince-the view interview and then tell why would prince anyone to help him with anything on any of his albums! The man is smart and needs no help as far as music goes. im just saying.
@kendpurest : About "Little Red Corvette" who can say for sure whether or not Dez had to work from a scratch track Prince played or if Dez was given space to do his own thing. I'd have to refer back to Dez's book "My Time Prince" where I'm sure he talks about it. I do remember that Dez's solo is comped from from 2 takes.
@majin32547 Prince usually does the solo at the end, but he broke his guitar at 0:51. He leans over to Dez at 1:38 and tell him to take the solo, Dez agrees. Fate!
@Mizvision how can you tell this (the guitar string) it sounds almost exactly like the album version, I know he's changed in his time but back in the day everyone (except maybe him) lipped their shtuff, on bandstand Mike
@Mizvision I didn't even notice that, I was too busy lookin' at Prince lol. I had to go back at see after I read your post. On a different note: Prince has always looked so good to me & has a speaking voice that makes me wanna drool. Even though he is short, he is totally proportioned. If he were a foot taller he would categorically be perfect.
@majin32547 --- Dez doesn't get much credit for this but he was Slash, before there was a Slash as far as black rock guitarist goes.................. so much for his new career in christian music and that was Andre in there too mixing it up
lol this is prince at his finest, when he was broke and still flashy did you see when his guitar fell off the strap i think he taped it with ducktape and glue he stole from the school supply
you should change this from live to lip synced no one ever played live on this show. you can hear the difference at the end when Bobby is banging on the drums . Live songs never sound just like the records. Done to many live shows in my time.Gotten to the point I don't like the polished album recordings anymore. Give me a live show anyday that's when real talent shines.
Do you have Prince performing "I Wanna Be Your Lover" from the same show too? I would so love to see that again! This is great video here, thanks for sharing!
Nice seeing this. I remember Dick Clark saying in all his years of hosting AB, this was the hardest interview he ever gave because Prince was so nervous and he only answered questions with head nods, one word answers, and fingers. lol
des left because he wanted to do his own thing. he released one album that i know of. prince, brown mark, des, wendy, fink, (drummer). Prince drops his guitar by accident and at 1:38 you can see him say something to Dez, probably 'Mime the guitar solo cos I can't'... Brilliant performance.
@kendpurest oh that's right i remember now. There was a documentary on Prince on his early years about how people in his band weren't comfortable with Prince doing a group prayer and then going on stage and performing dirty songs and raunchy performances, so they left for religious reasons, i guess.
Des found God about a decade before Prince and left the group. Wendy and Lisa then became the public image of the Revolution after Prince. The band can not reform for a reunion in large part because the girls don't want to hear Prince witnessing to them
@CateyGaGa Yes I agree with you that Dez was better than Wendy and Gayle was better than Lisa. Andre was better than Brownmark as well. This version of the Revolution was the best by far. I think some of the original members left on their own for solo careers or religious reasons and that is why they were replaced.
@reggie46404 I'm not sure when the name of the band changed. They were known back then as Prince and the Revolution officially. The Revolution was Prince's background band but Prince recorded all the music and played all the instruments on the recordings. Jimi Hendrix and The Experience, Sly and the Family Stone and KC and the Sunshine Band did similar things. Everybody knew that Prince, Jimi and KC were the real stars and front men of their bands.
@butterp7 -actually yes but not a lot if insight to Prince which is my only fault with the book. He didn't want the book to be a dish up about Prince or whatever but he could've included a lot more detail about his music style and how he evolved from when they first met. That's the only thing the book misses. It did touch on the infamous "leaving the stage when they opened for the Stones.
@CateyGaGa dez left because he got born again, and as a born again christian, he wasnt compable playing songs about sex, head, drugs, etc. also prine wasnt paying the bamd shit, never gave them credit for anything, prince was a asshole back then
