  • Classic problem with Gibson trying to be innovative

    Good idea, horrible execution

  • imagine this guitar with an edge 3 tremolo....

  • I have the "original" version of that guitar (1985 model) and yeah, with a Kahler or even a Floyd, you need a locking nut. Mine is surprisingly light compared to other Explorers and definately doesn't have the tuning problems you were having... It's a shame that some 'quality control' and design issues slip by on an otherwise great guitar.

  • That's Something I Don't Get!!! If Gibson Make So Called "Great Guitars", Then Why Would They Put Kahler Tremolos On Their Guitars Without A Locking Nut??? Obviously They Have No Idea What They're Doing!!! XD

  • @DylanBStringer91

You can't judge a guitar by what's written on the headstock =)

  • 2:18 it sounds like "YOU BITCH! WHY DON'T YOU CUM???"

  • Awesome Post , Fabulous sound & Great playing ty.

  • Kahler Tremolo's are cool, but Floyd Rose Originals (Double-Locking; once at the nut & once at the Saddles) Float like 3 steps, so u can pull the Whammy-Bar UP & it goes higher pitch, but u gotta do it GENTLY or it'll break a string, & U CAN NEVER pull it up either while bending a string or pulling the whammy bar up then bending the string(s)...or strings will break REALLY EASY; that's what happens to Jack Butler (Steve Vai) at the end of the Head Cutting Guitar Duel from the movie Crossroads...

  • i have this guitar and its totally fine without a locking nut

  • having no locking nut is what attracted me to the Shred-X. I have a strat with a floyd Rose, maybe I'm too aggressive with it, but I'm always tuning it. When I've bottomed out the micro turners, out comes the allen wrench. I hate that.

  • Black Explorer + EMGs + TOM Bridge = Legend!!

Black Explorer + EMGs + Khaler Bridge - Locking Nut = Pile Of Shit

The only guitars that Gibson does great are the Les Pauls.

Wanna buy an Explorer? Go for ESP

Wanna buy a Flying V? Go for Jackson

  • @EldubeG25 why dont you come back when you actually know what you are talkinng about.

  • why wouldnt you just fucking put locking tunes dumbass

  • I was looking at one of these and it looks like you can just can take the Kahler off and put a Tone Pros on it.

  • i was thinking of getting the shred x should i?

  • @vM3TALLICAx wouldn't recommend it. The kahler has no lock nut and the locking tuners are terrible. Get ESP, cheaper and better.

  • @vM3TALLICAx Get it and google Sta-Tuned Locking Nut. You don't need to cut into the guitar or anything it just fixes around the strings behind the nut :) It is a great guitar...I have one ;P Imo ESP Explorers sound no where near as good as Gibson

  • @vM3TALLICAx i would recommend it. i have one and love it despite its imperfections

  • man Gibson really has a thumb up their ass lately don't they? i mean seriously... no locking nut? how much does a locking nut raise the price by? 20 bucks? COME ON. ITS GIBSON. if you want a Gibson you're supposed to be prepared to spend shitloads of money, so why does Gibson skimp out to save money when they're gonna overprice it anyway? and they've been in the business for 50 years... why can't they make a neck that can have a proper shredding action?

  • No clean ?

  • wtf no lockin gnut?? wat were they thinkinggg, and is there an epiphone alternitive to this/ i want an explorer with a trem

  • @ravenshield56 Epiphone has a series called the Prophecy series that includes an older model of the Explorer body known as the Futura. It's similar but it has less fret-access because for some retarded reason, they put a neck heel on it which just blocks off the last 2 frets because you can't reach em.

but it has a Floyd Rose tremolo and an EMG 81/85 set. only problem is, the Floyd Rose is not in a recessed cavity, so you can't really pull up that well, and the Futura body limits fret access.

  • @AirgunAddict256 thanks alot that was helpful :) I will try it out, is it available in shop or is it discontinued?

  • @ravenshield56 it's not discontinued, i know that. it should be available online for a lot of stores, including Guitar Center. if you're lucky you should be able to find it at a local Guitar Center.

btw, if i were you, i think i'd rather consider ESP's option, the EX-401DX. it has a Floyd Rose with a proper recessed cavity, the real Explorer body (with sharper edges to avoid a copyright violation) and has EMG 81/60 pickups instead of the 81/85.

but it's all personal preference. both are great.

  • @AirgunAddict256 thanks again :) im going with the ESP, im gonna see if there are any on Ebay :)

  • so fucking good.!

  • i have one of these and im only 14 :P there was only 40 of them made limited edition with emgs and a 2200 bridge

  • @heavymetalforever996 Wow you must be a spoiled brat. When I was 14 I had a $200 guitar.

  • I just love that music you use in the beggining.

  • quick question, what was your reverb setting/etc for your solo section at 1:15? i like the sound but i cant get it like that, i know you have some delay in there but how much?

  • So does kahler have a locking tremolo? Or are all of them just use tremolo with locking tuners

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980 Most guitars with floating bridges have locking nuts, it's very uncommon that they don't have one.

  • @murmelswe Gibson is evidently cutting corners in terms of productions, and as demonstrated here in all the wrong places. Kahlers per se are great. It's beyond me why Gibson can't be bothered to spend extra $ 20 - 40 to buy and install an afternut stringlock and even out the action, so there's no buzz. Considering the RRP on that thing, that is the least one can expect from a Gibson at no extra cost to the actual price tag, really.

  • I use to be a gibson guy. No longer.

  • WTF?.. floating bridge without locking nut oO.. that is kinda insane

  • You mention that it is a heavy guitar -- which is something I like. Do you know exactly how much it weights?

    Cheers,

  • could u put a locking nut on it?

  • @arehormeus Yep, Kahler make locking nuts, always have, they are $ 10 - 12 - unlike Floyd Nuts they are not a nut replacement, but rather an "after the nut - lock" based locking nut, which means that it can be fitted on ANY guitar without doing any structural damage to the fretboard/neck. They've got two types of nuts - either the kind you would see on old Jackson/Charvels (a lá Model 6 (aka Jackson Soloist)), except with hex screws instead of straight edge, or a Finger-Tite (aka Bill Edwards).

  • @BeardyAirways but is it as effective as a floyd rose locking nut?

  • Now is it better to put replace one pickup with the new X series or just replace both?

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980 i think replace both

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980

you dont need to do that

itll just be a waste of money and time cause you already got the pickup in there

there both the same thing except the x doesnt need soldering

  • if you look at every gibson with a trem none of them have a locking nut and they never have had locking nuts

  • Not quite right:

I own a 88' Flying-V90 that came stock with Steinberger trem / locking nut and a 84' Flying V with kahler and locking nut.

  • @davhil2 Well, they recently started making a Gibson Les Paul "Axcess" with a deeper cutaway, and a full floyd rose, completee with a locking nut. I'm happy for that.

  • Explorers are heavy, this is not a problem, it is a good thing.

  • how much did u pay for that thing?

    its my dream guitar:P

  • its all preferance... the shorter scales seem to have a more pure, and bigger sound

  • your dream is for it to go out of tune?

  • I was amazed of 3 things: 1) This guy is really good!!!

    2)That amp sounds incredibly good.

    3) That guitar is a piece of shit. One of the most poorly constructed guitars ever.

  • @nothinghappens1 ya this think can stay in tune worth of shit on E standard tuning. my friend owns one. but tuned down to like drop c or C standard around that area it stays in tune just fine , especialy with good locking tuners

  • @nothinghappens1 Why is it the most poorly constructed guitar? Im thinking of getting one. If you could tell me then I would probably change my mind. Im not being sarcastic. As in what are the problems that you think should be addressed. Thanks man.

  • @joshua9312 Well man, is obvious that a major flaw is that this guitar does not have nut locking, and you know that a guitar with kahler or floyd rose must have locking nut. Another thing is that gibson started, for some reason, to be sloppy on their quality control and you can see cracks and poor finish on their guitars. But, if you want a cool explorer you should stick with the classic explorer, and if you want a modern explorer you should try the vampire blood moon explorer. Cheers man!!!

  • @nothinghappens1 Thanks man! Yea, that IS true about the guitar not having a locking nut. Thats pretty stupid of them hahha. And it its true about their quality control. I have a Gibson SG GT and the quality is pretty bad. I paid 4k for that and its not what I expected to get from. Anyway, what guitar would you suggest that has a floyd rose/ kahler for metal? Thanks.

  • @joshua9312 Well man, i truly recommend ibanez guitars, specially with zero resistance tremolo (which allows you to keep playing even after you broke the E, B or G high strings); after that, i´m very impressed with DEAN guitars thta sports an original floyd rose. I can tell you that my top 3 of guitar makers are:

1- ibanez 2-Dean 3- LTD (esp) . Try to avoid EMG pickups, they sound awful; but if you want active pups, seymour duncan blackouts or any active duncans. Cheers man and keep it metal!

  • i guitar with a kahler of floyd with no locking nut is absolute @$5#%

  • you really hate gibson metal guitars don't you.......lol same here I prefer Ibanez and Jackson.

  • how about the gibson m3? I had one, sold it and regret it.

  • you're an idiot, he is doing a demo of the sound and tone with the gibson. He isn't trying to create a song or masterpiece here.

  • @devax1986 regardless, it does sound fantastic. :)

  • Are you fucking stupid. talk about the biggest hater ever. Watch his other videos, he's amazing.

  • thick strings?

  • hey man ever think of getting a Line 6 pod, vypyrs are great amps from what i heard but say an X3 or XT Pod guitar processor and you can take over the world.

hopefully you had a great weekend you rock!

  • you really should get a new amp man, like roland cube or peavy vyper, your such a good player, but to be honest you could get a much better tone from one of those two.

anyways, the guitar LOOKS cool, and sounds pretty cool, but i'd never buy a guitar with a kahler or floyd without a locking nut.

  • why did u buy it ?

  • i would never get a guitar that includes a tremelo without a locking nut

  • just but a locking nut then or get really REALLY light gauge strings and it wont go out of tune

  • ya but then your strings snap easier and anyways, i think that thicker strings give a meatier crunchier tone good point though and thnx for that idea.

  • see what i do is then i bought eerny ball skinny bottem heavy tops so when i play heavy stufff on top its super heavy and thick and when i solo on bottem the strings are skinny bendable and comfy so......try that out ?

  • sounds beautiful despite the aforementioned problems lol

  • gibson guitars really arent that great for metal are they?

  • Ever listned to metallica lol

  • metallicas my fave band- they didnt just use gibson

  • yeah metallica is my favourite band by far! Kirk and James tend to use ESP's now.

  • they didn't?

  • Jesus christ i was looking at comments-kirk and james used flying vs and james used explores by gibson. IM SUCH AN ITIOT!

  • Listen to that tone. You tell me. :D

  • yeah but not technically designed for it, jackson is a better bet

  • I would love to see you review a Musicman Petrucci model to see what you think. It has a great tremolo without a locking nut and stays in tune wonderfully. I think you would like it.

  • glad to see youre making some more videos, theyre very informative

  • how is this guitar for rhythm playing?

  • Funney that one of the "best" guitar manufacturers makes such terrible mistakes.

  • no locking nut? wow.

  • I think gibson simply dont care about they're heavy metal guitars focusing on les pauls and SG models? because after all thats where they make 90% of there cash..

  • you really should use a tube amp for good reviews. . but this was really good anyway, i was thinking about getting one of these

  • What is going on with gibson ?!

  • 0.58 was beautifull, you should use that on a song.

  • someone has a signiture guitar without a locking nut , ypur only ment to use it for lighr vibrato

  • yeah this is rediculously stupid on gibson's part

it doesnt even have a locking nut

    oh gibson :3

  • I like your boxers.

  • pretty sure those are shorts...? Anyways, awesome explorer. Id much rather prefer a floyd for my trem though.

  • Given the fact that an expensive guitar shouldn't require a lot of work to correct problems like these, how difficult do you think it'd be to correct the problems? Say if you got a really good deal on one through an Ebay auction or the like? A Kahler locking nut wouldn't be hard to install, but the neck issue has me worried. Was the buzzing due to the neck's shape, or do the frets need work?

  • roentgen its simply a problem with most gibsons that they have buzz like that.

really if you want a guitar in a similar shape get a jackson kelly, besides its a guitar actually made for heavier metal

  • or you can get and ESP ex

  • It must be a recent decline in quality control at the factory or something... I have two Gibsons, both 1970s era RD Artists (one bass, one guitar), and both are fantastic.

  • That's too bad about Gibson....Up until now, I've been after a Gibson, but now this video changes my opinion....

Thanks for the demo, DMO :)

  • lol you're videos are so informative. I'm just gonna stay away from Gibson guitars now. lol. But i freakin love the x-plorer shape, so im just wondering if the ESP EX or FX are any good.

  • i dont understand why you would keep buying kahlers?

  • This is a video I had made last year. I reuploaded as I have been updating my channel again. It's the same guitar I had last year.

  • okay sorry i just meant why ever buy them when dont you mbend on a guitar i bend as much as i tune

  • I thought you sold this guitar due to it not having a proper locking nut?

  • He returned it. (as said in the side bar)

  • Ahh i misread that thanks for the correction

  • no prob

  • dude it doesnt even have a lockin nut, just a regular nut that u would have on a guitar with a tun-o-matic bridge

  • And what are your comments on Gibson's shody quality control? You have the first comment, you must have SOME insight right? Or is the only thing you can do is count to 1?

  • Well I was going to put this in but something got over me. Their quality control is terrible, because they didnt put a locking nut on a guitar with a Floyd Rose, plus the fact that you can see on other models that there are paint chips on the body, etc
