Well, I have been singing this song a lot this week, since I do have a rat in my kitchen that is way to smart to walk in the trap...so what am I gonna do...haha
@ donjah, so what is supposed to happen once the originators of this kind of music have passed on? Let the music die with them?
Or should all new artists give some of their earnings to a fund for the originators and their families? You see the artists that you mention below wrote their own music as well as a few covers no doubt.
Things move on, things progress, people make money from a variety of things that years ago did not generate a wealth. That is life I am afraid.

this is a case of hijacking music, UB 40 are an embarrasment to reggae. they have done exactly what the likes of eric clapton , keith richards and co.etc have done to blues music. they are an embarrasment to blues as well. they all did well at the expense of the originators of these forms of music who lamented in poverty ,especially in the case of blues.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@donjah You are not only wrong, but quite naive.... No one suffered because of this music being copied to a certain extent by white, whites are more intelligent and more resourceful than blacks generally so they had the brains and money to go mainstream with the music. If it was left to blacks, there wouldn't even be any music instruments or recording equipment with which to record this music, let alone distribute it.... think again and get that chip off your shoulder!!
well ... I have to disagree, then. Ali G sings a whole different kind of music, though.
It's like comparing apples to martians.
The likes of you trying to define what is good music and what is not are the ones who are wrong the most, though. So I guess your ignorance serves as a good excuse for you. Fine by me. One less person I get to talk to. I don't enjoy talking much ... to people, anyways.
Yes UB40 that gig was awsome, that night i bought a wrist band i played it now and then in South East London, also Kent,on personal comptuer, plaese UB40 when r u coming back 2 O2 with Ali Campbell @ north greenwich, i would love to see u back there in the futrue.

@Spiderwebsider everyone has different opinions. some hate her some love her. I feel that unions for one was the reason why British industry was obliterated. They made it uncompetitive and poisoned it with red tape and lots of rules etc. Most of them were costing more to keep going than they earned. She clamped down on them and made uk competitive at that time
I lived through this, did you? It's easy to blame the unions, but poor management was just as much to blame. British companies didn't innovate, they just knocked out the same tired old stuff on outdated machinery (i.e. Leyland, the motorcycle industry). Was that the fault of the unions? What was needed was reinvestment and restructuring without the violent confrontation. All she did was shut everything down. A 5 year old could have done that. That's why she was such a poor PM.
@Dinlochavo yes i lived through it u was right about the poor management as well especially with leyland but the unions encouraged that culture. The soviets were happy with there plan. I enjoyed it when she just closed the mines down puting them bone idle poor northerners on tut dole. I am a sadist at heart :) Music was pretty good back then though
So let me get this straight. She shut down British manufacturing and closed all the mines, leaving Britain to rely solely on the finance and service industries. How is that working out for you by the way? Have you forked over enough dosh to bail 'em out yet? So it's not OK to partially subsidise a few working-class jobs in the interest of social cohesion, but it is OK to spend billions bailing out useless failed bankers? How's your current account deficit looking these days?
@Spiderwebsider she never closed anything that didnt need it. She closed the pits but they were communists loosing money all the time and its dirty fosil fuel anyway. She got rid of Leyland as it was loosing 2 million a day back then BMW found to there cost nomatter how much money u throw at it its a lost cause. She didnt kill manufacturing. We simply ouldnt compete with tiger economies who are cheaper and not run by militant unions.
@Anglichanen I am gutted we dont make much anymore not happy. I don't blame Thatcher though one bit. I look to the unions for the desruction they caused but people cant see it. unions have strong ties with communism which was our enemy at that time. The Russians were smart enough to cause much damage to us without droping a single bomb by infecting us with this ideology.
@Anglichanen banks screwed us over, yes but it was under a labour gov when brown deregulated them to do what they like. It made them greedy and look for short term profit commision when the investment is bad. they traded lots of crap bonds and toxic mortgages knowing they are volatile but hey they get there commision. Thick labour voting northerners though always just blindly blame magie for there own downfall
The Blair/Brown NuLabour Party is a pathetic excuse for a party that has sold out its old constituency in favour of a neo-liberal, free market ideology. Deregulation is a fundamental tenet of neo-liberalism, which also happens to be Tory ideology as well. Banksterism happened in the US too, under both Democrat and Republican parties. It's called greed and it walks hand in hand with the free market. You are drawing a bit of a long bow to blame the northerners for that!
Most union members I worked with were not communist at all. Just decent people trying to earn a crust and get a fair share. If there was a problem with communist union LEADERS and an over-regulated economy then surely that could have been dealt with without the enormous social and economic dislocation. It's called leadership and it's something she didn't have.
By competing with tiger economies I take it you mean working for lower wages because that is the only advantage they have. All that succeeds in doing is starting a race to the bottom.
@Spiderwebsider And since we dont make anything anymore labours answer is to create 3 million more public sector jobs + there pensions that were never needed and it has to be paid for eventually by evryone who puts something into the country again making UK less competitive again. I think she was not brutal enough. We would be in less mess if they allowed her to really destroy the unions properly.
What you are doing here is drawing a false dichotomy between 3 million useless public sector jobs created by NuLabour to swell labour votes, and proper trade unionism. If NuLabour was so enamoured of the unions, then why did it allow millions of foreigners in to take union jobs?
If you destroy unions altogether then you have no balance in the economy and we all become slaves to the boss. Again, you need real leadership.
@Spiderwebsider But I agree in the end she did go too far. She became arrogant because she had been in 2 long and power goes 2 there head which is why in the US they put a maximum of 2 terms in governemnt. We get Thatch/Blairism. We will never be a great manufacturing country again unless we get rid of the union culture and we are infected with it in this country.
To be a great manufacturing nation again we need investment in machinery and people. We need to convince our best and brightest to study engineering and science, not law, MBAs or media studies. We need proper dialogue between bosses and workers, not just bloody-minded confrontation. That would be a start.
But I'll tell you this, if we don't start large scale manufacturing again we're finished in the long term.
@Spiderwebsider I doubt you will agree with me though but i respect ur own beliefs. I like Russian life/history and they admit themslves they planted brainwashed clones in western uni's to brainwash the next generation with socialism and thats why so many teachers etc are soc. Thatcher understood this and tried to break the unions. She didn't so we're all in a mess today
@Spiderwebsider and i like UB40 but dont like muscicians as people as they tend to think they are politicians or businessmen when they are not! If ali or whoever wrote this song was so clever they would have had a job and not be on UB40. Spose thats a good thing as they wouldn't have made music otherwise. U2, paul Weller etc are also hypocritically stupid
I guess we've hijacked enough of this post. Obviously we are poles apart in terms of political and economic ideologies, but I respect your beliefs and you argue well - except for the "thick northerners" jibe which was unnecessary and a bit Alan B'stard.
I heard this song during traveling through Breat Britain when I stopped to put petrol in my vehicel..

If ali or whoever wrote this song was so clever they would have had a job and not be on UB40. Spose thats a good thing as they wouldn't have made music otherwise. U2, paul Weller etc are also hypocritically stupid

@Anglichanen
I guess we've hijacked enough of this post. Obviously we are poles apart in terms of political and economic ideologies, but I respect your beliefs and you argue well - except for the "thick northerners" jibe which was unnecessary and a bit Alan B'stard.

A strange band. I used to love them period 1980/81 but their cover versions alienated them for me.
