As long as you do drumming for yourself, and not to show off. I hate drummers who are so insecure, they spend hours everyday, putting themselves through grueling speed exercises just to impress everybody. When any musicians do that , they've missed the whole point entirely of what playing music is all about - its about having fun!!!! That's why i never listen to guys like malmsteen - mindless shredding!! All guys like that think about are to be faster than everybody else!!!! Pathetic.
Mr. Appice was impressive in his day but is now boring. So many double bass drummers out there just stretching the double bass concept far beyond Carmine's reach. A wafer? Who the fuck needs needs that? Vanilla wafer maybe. Can I get a glass of milk with that wafer?
I saw Mr. Appice live when he played for King Cobra. He played an amazing solo and left the crowd in awe. Upon the completion of his solo the crowd stood and gave him a standing ovation. It was fantastic!
And so the idiot commenters come out to play again. Lest we all not forget Carmine was the man who got Bonham his first Ludwig kit, and it was a double bass kit originally, but he only used one. Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple said that anybody who was anybody was going to see Vanilla Fudge in the late 60's early 70's, not Hendrix like the common misconception. Carmine and Ginger Baker are the GODFATHERS of Rock drumming. Nobody did it like them first. End. Of. Story.
I like the East Coast Palookaville, Chicago-style hot dog drum sensibilities. "Yo, Vinnie, where's the pizza pie for Joe Schmoe?" Hey, go out to Coney Island and order a pop and big cheeze pretzle wif Snookie ya' big schlameel!" New York Port Authority is coming with their union thugs to make your a Hoagie sandwich with some Jersey Shore "situation" hot Pastrami grooves. Hey, yo, yo, raise your hand and order a bagel dog & some pizza pie off the New Jersey Turn Pike. Where's Frankie? Yo, yo!
all modern rock drummers comes from those three: Appice, Paice, Bonahm.
Appice come first and he's the master. If you listen Ian solo "the mule" you should note that most of the patterns come from Appice (Vanilla Fudge epoch). I don't know if was Ian to copy him but...
To those a**holes who yawned, said it was ugly and boring beats, u should know who this guy is and his contributions for the drumming world, he's been an influence for great drummers like Dave Lombardo, Neil Peart, Tommy Lee or Phil Collins. Your comments reflect your utter ignorance.
Carmines Rock legacy would probably be better if he stopped trying to take Credit for bringing us Bonham. even if Bonham did hear and use something off a VF album guess what NOBODY REMEMBERS YOU DOING IT CARMINE!!!! Cause Bonham will always rule... and you can't stand that can you... Oh and your bro owns you too!!!
its funny, this guy is a super drummer, i have an old tape from him at a clinic where he goe's through steps on independence, just opened up my mind, and love working on those, his playing was super on blue murder album, but tommy aldridge in my mind, is a better rock drummer, listen to ozzy speak of the devil, and pat travers live go for what you know, and in ways tommy is not near as schooled as carmine, both great,, though
Seeing him scream, "YOU READY TO ROCK 'N' ROLL" coupled with the lights shutting off and the laser sticks coming on had me conclude that this is probably the most depressing gimmicky clinic I've ever seen in my entire life. Some good rock drumming though. Oh yeah by the way the clinic-host-dudes shirt totally doesn't fit him, despite what he says.
Carmine, his brother Vinny, Tommy Aldridge, the late John Bonham, Alex Van Halen -- the five heaviest drummers I've heard in ages. When they beat the drums, the earth shook!
This man is a true teacher, most everything he is explaining is stuff that he devolped back in the late 60s and early 70s every drummer of that era looked up to this legend...carmine changed drums he did it before bonham...
LOL at 4:40 when he explains the paradiddle he says: "Right, Left, Right, Right, Left, Right, Left, Left, right?" ...Now there's a challenge guys! Of course I know the last "right" was just a matter of speach but it actually inspired me to try this nine-stroke pattern (RLRRLRLLR)... And it sounds friggin' awesome, especially when you alternate between different drums, including kick(s) and cymbals.
The great Carmine Appice taught us a great lesson without realizing it. Thank you Mr. Appice!!!
learned to play and read drums with Carmine's book and square record inserts. saw him and Vinny at a drum clinic in Regina Saskatchewan of all places! r-l-rr l-r-ll...paradiddle indeed!
I used to take lessons from Carmine back in 1975, out in Long Island NY. Was anyone else on board then? He had a rented house with drum sets in most of the rooms, and while you were waiting for your lesson, he had a video machine you could check out Buddy Rich's hands in slow motion as another way of learning stick control. I always drove home with a head full of new things to practice.
@ter50 Sorry that is not true! Although Carmime is a under rated drummer but he is not in the same league as Bonham, Paice, and Ward.. The biggest problem with Carmine is his bad attitude. Don't mention Ozzy around him! I do not intend too stir shit just the truth. I hope Carmine doesn't read this LOL. Naw, he is a good friend he will just challenge me to a drum off. LOL
@ElectricHellfire Appice may not be as good as Bonham, Paice and Ward, but what's that got to do with anything? He taught them most of their stuff. That's like saying Richie Blackmore does not play in the same league as Yngwie Malmsteen and Vinnie Moore. :-) (I was going to say Jimi Hendrix, but he's dead so Blackmore is a better example).
He did one particularly douchy Modern Drummer interview in the 80's. He came across as kind of bitter or maybe even insecure. Strange. The guy is a great drummer. I prefer the Brit drummers of his era though.
I love musician comments. I bet half of the people here talking smack can't even keep a straight beat or be in any serious band. Let the professionals do their thing, if it sounds simplistic to yo than make your own video or start a band and then you can compare.
@ceramiclion I hate this shit. "You don't have a right to your own opinion until you've made a video!" Who cares if any of them can play. If it's a valid complaint it's a valid complaint. That's such a cop out.
Hey, I swear on my life I'm as good as him (which isn't a big deal, thousands of drummers are) and I don't have the luxury of paying my bills my whole life with it. If I were in his position and looked around at the competition I'd kick myself in the butt and not rest on my laurels. If anyone is smug and arrogant, it's him for doing just that. Nonetheless, his instructional book is great. I just hate to see people get complacent.
He opened for Zeppelin in December of 1968 here in Denver with the Vanilla Fudge. His was horrific in a band called Blue Murder where the kit was as big as the stage and he had a few blonde midgits on guitars...it was one long drum solo. His best gigs were with Rod in '79 then Rod fired him for becoming bigger than him onstage.
A Carmine Appice "clinic" is good to go to if you're about one year into playing drums. However, he hasn't improved in 40 years. Virgil Donati blows him away. You wouldn't want to bother going to see Carmine after seeing Virgil, believe me.
Everytime I hear slingerland drums played by professionals they just sound incredible. Carmine Appice performed the best at the chicago vintage drum show. A true master on the drums. The rest of us were just students.
"Talking and playing is pretty cool. I can't do it." I know what your sayin..kinda like maintaining a clockwise circular pattern with your right foot and simultaneously

ok,, but i think he is so stuck in his era, drummers need to grow in time and expand, it seems a bit stale and young drummers are probably falling asleep hell with the crazy drumming as of late!!! thomas pridgen, tony royster jr, u no guys like that just melting the drums down
Carmine is the original "rock" drummer. In the 60's he was the guy coming up with all the cool, now classic rock licks. Other drummers of that era played jazz influenced licks, grooves. Bonham stole a lot of Carmine's shit.
I own a set he used at one of his clinics in 2006, Slingerland Studio Kings, broken in and autographed by a true drum ledend.....thanks, your the best !
you gotta love Carmine.....What people dont realize is that he brought a lot of the jazzier Max Roach and Elvin and Chico Hamiton drumming ideas into heavier rock contexts .....so what looks dated now was state of the art then...the guy is a legend and doesnt get the credit cause he is still alive...people suk that way...not to mention....every single thing he shows you can use on the gig..metal or rock ...without gettin fired or even to power the band . not the same with some of the new ideas
He`s a good drummer--and his brother should take some lessons at him--coz Vinnie`s drumming is so boring--don`t know any reason why Iommi play with such a worse player--
Enjoyed the video but the whoever recorded it could use some instruction on how to record sound. Carmine is a good drummer but not a great drummer. Ian Paice is a great drummer!
I've always thought he had one of the best styles in rock, also a lot of theory behind him,...I'd like to know what he thinks of these "metal" drummers now days, like tomas haake, I think his style SUCKS
he's a good drummer. his drumming just reflects his personality. consistently brutal to my ear, but not a bad drummer by any means. I choose not to play that way . but it seems to work for him.
I saw him at a clinic at the music store I teach at May 9th. He literally is one of the best drummers I've ever heard in my opinion. He is diverse and responsive to music theory. Of course there will be other drummers who are superior at different things, but I really enjoy Carmine's style.
Buddy knew TONS of rudiments,he didn't read music, but had a terrific memory..he was shown rudiments and played them in such interesting patterns, not to mention speed, power,an stamina.I've studied this dude over 40 years, saw him close to 20 times....he knew ,big time!
Buddy was beyond rudiments. Trying to teach Buddy Rich rudiments wold be like giving Mario Andretti driving lessons. He can already do it better than any prescribed technique.
That is basically a lampshade. He was playing an actual lampshade prior to Sabian creating a "prototype"- it's not cast, just cheap pressed brass. Contact Rob at Rebeats if you're interested in getting one.
This is great! Please just Stop being so fucking cynical all you people who are not worth the air you breathe....if you are a REAL musician, you would never in a million years be so negative towards a great musician like Carmine who is respected by so many .......
was this seriously in 08? I cannot believe he's going on about paradiddle beats and hhf hhff combinations. Is this at the drum show for people who have never played drums before? Talk about basic AND he plays it so sloppily. This is terrible.
i think the sloppiness you hear has a lot to do with the sound quality of the recording. he's a professional and he knows how to do everything there without being sloppy. also before you complain about the "basics" he's teaching lets remember this: he invented these "basics" and he's doing a clinic which is for drummers of all skill levels.
i guess i'll break the seal and post the first comment here...
i love carmine to death, but this has to be the LEAST inspired clinic i've seen him do. maybe the crowd was just not into it, but i think instead of unveiling his "stick dribble" as his new move, he should have unveiled the "time check" as his new move considering how many times he was seen checking his watch...
sorry, carmine. i still love you, but i guess we ALL have off days from time to time.

Well, paradiddles are basically drumming 101. At some point it is good to know the language.

I've always thought he had one of the best styles in rock, also a lot of theory behind him,...I'd like to know what he thinks of these "metal" drummers now days, like tomas haake, I think his style SUCKS

Im goin 2 see him on the 14th he seems awesome any one know what his gigs r like?

he's a good drummer. his drumming just reflects his personality. consistently brutal to my ear, but not a bad drummer by any means. I choose not to play that way . but it seems to work for him.

lol, why so sensitive, girly man ?
JimiJaamz 2 years ago
Because playing music is a sensitive matter Jimi.

I saw him at a clinic at the music store I teach at May 9th. He literally is one of the best drummers I've ever heard in my opinion. He is diverse and responsive to music theory. Of course there will be other drummers who are superior at different things, but I really enjoy Carmine's style.

it's funny that buddy rich , possibly the greatest drummer to ever walk the earth, didn't know know any thing about rudiments!
bendinggreenvans 2 years ago
Buddy knew TONS of rudiments,he didn't read music, but had a terrific memory..he was shown rudiments and played them in such interesting patterns, not to mention speed, power,an stamina.I've studied this dude over 40 years, saw him close to 20 times....he knew ,big time!
buddy92585 2 years ago
he might've played them but he said in an interview that he couldn't tell a paradiddle from a ratamacue.
bendinggreenvans 2 years ago
Buddy was beyond rudiments. Trying to teach Buddy Rich rudiments wold be like giving Mario Andretti driving lessons. He can already do it better than any prescribed technique.

What kind of cymbal is between his toms?
craftyrobot 2 years ago
That is basically a lampshade. He was playing an actual lampshade prior to Sabian creating a "prototype"- it's not cast, just cheap pressed brass. Contact Rob at Rebeats if you're interested in getting one.

was this seriously in 08? I cannot believe he's going on about paradiddle beats and hhf hhff combinations. Is this at the drum show for people who have never played drums before? Talk about basic AND he plays it so sloppily. This is terrible.
zildjian66 3 years ago
That was NOT sloppy!
DrMorbid 3 years ago 2
i think the sloppiness you hear has a lot to do with the sound quality of the recording. he's a professional and he knows how to do everything there without being sloppy. also before you complain about the "basics" he's teaching lets remember this: he invented these "basics" and he's doing a clinic which is for drummers of all skill levels.

i guess i'll break the seal and post the first comment here...
i love carmine to death, but this has to be the LEAST inspired clinic i've seen him do. maybe the crowd was just not into it, but i think instead of unveiling his "stick dribble" as his new move, he should have unveiled the "time check" as his new move considering how many times he was seen checking his watch...
sorry, carmine. i still love you, but i guess we ALL have off days from time to time.
