First of all, this is a great speedrun, hands down. But I don't believe you this can be performed on a NES console without using tools. Many piranha plants should have killed you, for examle that one at 3:26. Level 8-4 has several disputable scenes, for example the disappearing piranha and the jump over Bowser. That one hammer hit you, no matter how slow I watch it. In level 4-2, you don't reach the warp zone thourgh a pipe and in 8-4 you use the wrong pipe to get in the underwater part.

@sinkopower The fastest TAS is about 4:54 using the same timing as this.

There are some very minor things that Andrew still can improve, about 40 frames faster can be done.

@ABumInABox The amount of coins you grab doesn't change the score counter at the end. It only depends on the amount of seconds you have left which you can only effect by delaying seconds, and that is a lot slower.

@Xcab7 cuz In the emulator the timing is set by default at 50 (Its like 50 hz from PAL) and in his console must be NTSC, you listen the music more fast cuz the timing set on the console is 60hz (full speed = real speed of game)

@Xcab7 They are both possible and it was all done in one video. You should read his FAQ in the description that explains the things going on.

It is NOT made with an emulator. The change in music speed may be because you are used with the PAL version or something like that. This run is made on the NTSC version on a real NES in real time, one take, without hacking or cheating devices.

@Xcab7 I'm just a "random" person who knows a lot about speedrunning this game as well as the runner. Because of his speedruns of this game, he was part of an event for the 25 years anniversary of Mario where he played through this game in front of a lot of people, including Shigeru Miyamoto (Video on his channel).

I have seen him play in person and during live streams and I know that everything of it is genuine. That's why I defend his runs by answering such comments about it.

@DruidVorse The TAS timing is slightly different. The timing used by Speed Demos Archive, which this run went by, the time starts from you get to move Mario in the first stage. While TASes start from powering on the game. This adds about 3 seconds for the TAS.

I've waited a long time to see 5:08 be broken. i argue that TG should update their rules to except all glitches or none at all. the only other option would be divide the minimal speed run into two catagories, with and without glitches. 5:08 to this day is the record without glitches. you deserve credit for what you have done but so do they

@andrewg1990 I only argue the point because they don't allow other glitches. as for score, you dont need a glitch to do what i have described. tg's rules limit the amount of times you can die therefore you can't do that for the world record(i've already got the highest possible score that way). i argue any glitches or no glitches, a simple all or nothing. maybe they should divide the miinimal speed run into two classes. understand i say this out of my love for the game

This run has been verified by Speed Demo Archive, who spend months verifying speed runs and are the most respected non-TAS speedrunning website on the net. It is NOT fake. Andrew G recently completed a 4:58 run that is now in the verification process. This man has even performed a speedrun of this game live in front of Miyamoto himself. Please get you facts correct before you make such accusations.

4:38 is nuts, that catch to get the pipe is nearly impossible. I remeber watchin a friend try'n get a speedrun in for 5m, and he'd get there flawless, miss that pipe and have to restart.

also i remember he'd go under bowser rather than through the hammers. just as quick and a bit easier. also remember him swearing that hitting the flag bottoms saves time but i guess you think not.

amazing run, to hit all those bugs correctly in one go is insane, must've taken a great many fails. kudos.

TAS timing always start from powering on the game and in this case it ends when touching the axe.
