Whenever someone holds food in their hand, the odor of the food remains. Maybe that is what the chipmunk smelled when the food was offered. It happens quite a bit. Especially if someone is feeding pidgeons. A old lady in a park I went to once wore a rain suit to the park & was feeding the birds. One bird managed to poke its beak into the plastic of the rain suit, and ate all of the seeds she had put under it. Birds & other animals can be quite smart.
