This was a good video guys. I want to say, I think many people lose their direction on education because they see all these celebrities who are a disaster and dumb, and they make millions of dollars being stupid. And mind you, if you live in America, majority of the peoples heads and hearts are only concerned about money. So you see, you don't need education for money, you can get money being stupid. And maybe people realize this. You have make up gurus on youtube. PLENTY of them.
@frichikendz Are these make up gurus necessarily smart? Did they finish school? Probably not. They just started with youtube, and started making money little by little. Education becomes now underrated because at the end of the day, in America, you still don't have enough money to fulfill your 'American Dream.' And that is why I believe most people struggle through it.
@frichikendz I had a study somewhere from my sociology class in which it compared 1950's I believe it was, and 2000's. 80% back then when to school to earn an education, the other 20% went to school to obtain money. Now, these numbers swapped withing a span of 50 years. Now, you only have 20% going to school to inspire themselves and learn. Now, again, I am not exactly sure about the dates or the percent rates. I remember the numbers where close to that. If I find the paper, I'll get back to you
Anton: I must have been mislead because the video description said On education.I was unaware is was specifically going to cover University education.I think the reason why students do no have a fervent attitude towards Universities is because the preamble to the University was filled with unnecessary diversions such as that French class you took or the Geometry class you spent hours in, only to find out you will never be an architect. I think at the preamble is where the change should start.
how about the video gamers metaphors: high school is easy mode, undergrad is medium, graduate is hard level, and real life is "brutal", "legendary" or "insane"
Interesting discusssion. I think often we ask "how should students deal with bad teaching" because we cant answer that other question: "how should faculties deal with bad teaching?" Beyond whatever review of teaching goes into the tenure and promotion process, there isnt much quality control. There are some egregiously bad teachers out there, and often the best a colleague can do is quietly steer his advisees away from them.
I hope this video isn't passed over by some because of its title. These metaphors, and even the discussion 'about' those metaphors, can be beautifully applied to life itself and our approach to being "enrolled in Universe". Loved this. Hope to see more of the two of you together here.
I think education, especially on this side of the pond, has become a means to an end, namely a cv improver, rather than an end in itself. There has been a 10% rise in university applications since 2008 due to the recession and since the late 70's the rate of pupils pursuing university life has risen from around 4% to 40+%. The plusses are an increase in the level of education among the young but this is tempered somewhat by a devaluing of degrees.
The girl showing off her legs while the guy is talking serious things, is distracting at best and disrespectful to the speaker at worst.

The missed opportunity theme seems to underlie your metaphors, even the prison one.
I would say it is kind of like Kafka's parable "Before the Law".
I could have been diverted by Dr Peterson's legs though.
