I bought this record in a box of 7"ers from the car-boot about a year ago (the box was a fiver), it was only when this single sold on ebay for about £20 that I checked it out for the first time here on youtube, and I've wished I'd kept it ever since. Top tune.
This record just SPELLS The 60's in one and every memory one has of them in under 3 minutes (The Beatles, The Stones, Dr Who, Thunderbirds, 007, Twiggy, The Avengers, Carnaby St, Radio Caroline, Red London Buses, Smiths Crisps with a little blue bag of salt, and of course proper warm 'real' Christmas's with our Mums and Dads and families).
My Dad also loved this track and I see his 'Image' every time I hear it.
I never thought that I would ever hear this song again the last time probably being 1967. The memories just came flooding back. Thank-you so much JimmyTheFerret. I always listened to Caroline North with Baby Bob and "your DJ Michael A",Mike Ahearn and of course "Look out street" Jack Spektor. What times! I detested Tony Benn when the Pirates were shut down and I still do, the rotten old git.
I still have a mint condition copy of this in my singles collection, recorded it to a NAB cart for air use, hence its mint status, a classic instrumental and one of my favourites. Nice share, thanks :-)
Yes where did it all go...the Pirates of the 1964 to 1967 period..can you believe it is over 40 years since this happened. It seems like yesterday that I was listening to Caroline London England City and all the other free radio stations. If you didn't live through that period, you will never understand what it meant to us teenagers then...
@colin803 Hi Colin. Just noticed your comment on this 'ere video of mine. I'll tell you where some of the pirate radio jocks have been recently. My other main hobby, besides collecting sixties music and sticking videos up here on YT, is metal detecting. Earlier this year I had a great day out detecting with Ron O'Quinn, former boss jock on Swinging Radio England, and Steve England, former Radio Caroline jock. Great day of digging and hearing stories of the fabulous pirate days.
@john111257 Did a joint pop music chart with Carl Kingston for Radio Caroline and then we both worked for the Voice Of Peace 1540khz......great days and great music!
I remember this from Radio Caroline North too. I only found out what it was called a couple of years ago. Still sounds as good as I remember it! Thanks for putting it on.
Absolutely right. Radio Carolines, North and South used this a lot. It was the nightshow start up with the closedown often being the Hank Levine version but no consistency as I recall, but it was over 40 years ago. Radio Luxembourg also used it a lot in the early 70's. I have the Alan Haven and Hank Levine 45's here somewhere in the boxes.
Brilliant! The resident DJ used to play this when I was at college in Birmingham, 66 to 68! For some reason he could never work out, he said it seemed to get the girls turned on . . .
Thanks for posting. Brings back memories of Tiffanys disco on Oxford Road, Manchester 1970s. DJ always played it as we left the club. Haunting sound ad great music.
was this written especially for the great british b horror film"the night caller" in 1965? or did they just use it?
great, groovey and gave this enjoyable horror a very stylish opening,,,it haunted my minds imagination for years as a child growing up(in a good way) when i first saw it, and loved the theme as an adult.
I think the word is pedantic.. therefore maybe pedanticism but forgiven in any case. The Lowrey did however also have built in Lesley type speaker but as you say external speakers were used....-bw
I would have expanded to explain this but just pointing out it was a Lowrey and not a Hammond... it's the player that makes the sound not so much the instrument, Alan. you could play a Bontempi from Woolworths and make it sound great. I did gigs in the US in early 70's supporting Billy Preston, he used the same Hammond B3 and Lesley as I did and I used his settings but could I sound like Billy? no way!. BTW. Degsydolittle is my alter ego I'm as Blue as Blue Weaver can be.
Degsy, I am ploughing through a mountain of tape from the 50's 60's and 70's and have found about twelve unreleased Haven tracks recorded for the BBC and believe me, they're stunning. I'll give you a nod when I post them on youtube.
DegsyDoLittle, Forgive my perdanticism (if there's such a word) but it wasa Lowrey Heritage with two external leslie 145's with the slow motors unplugged. Great sound innit?
BTW, we have crossed paths before and I know you'll be interested that six of the forementioned tracks are played on your beloved Viscount X150 with ARP 2600! Get those platforms on man, start the transit!
I had been searching for this likewise for ages - Found a copy a couple of weeks ago from the vinyl album from which it is lifted - Titled "IMAGES" (Plural). It only cost me £3.00p ! and my copy is in Stereo !!! Win Win all round.
This is so mementous for me, loved it, could never find it and yes, Brian Matthews played it for someone the other week. So happy to hear it again. ITunes dont have it.
It looks like Radio Caroline and the other '60's pirates will soon be in the news again.
In April 2009 there is a film called "The boat that rocked" being released.
It's set on a North Sea Pirate station in 1966, and will hopefully introduce a whole new generation to those great stations which were listened to by millions at the time.
Wow! how evocative this tune is. Alan Haven is a maestro, I still have four of his albums. 'Image' shares certain similarities with The Avengers theme tune. Great photo montage too. Jolly Well done sir.
Hi Alan, if you ever listen to this posting of your classic 'Image'. I remember you when you were the pianist at the Bolton Palais in the late 50's early 60's and my dad was the manager - All The Best - Bill(Junior!)
By the way - I live in Prestwich now - you know where that is don't you!
Thanks for the info re Blackburn, but I was aware that he was on Caroline South. It was just intended as a general Caroline montage and not totally specific to Caroline North. Nice to have the feedback though. Thanks also for the info re the stereo version.
Love this - very evocative and atmospheric. It was also used as the theme tune to the 60s UK sci-fi movie The Night Caller, but in a re-recorded version.
It's true about The Night Caller but the US release unfortunately used an inferior song and DVD releases often tend to use that version. UK TV screenings use the "Image" version.
I bought this record in a box of 7"ers from the car-boot about a year ago (the box was a fiver), it was only when this single sold on ebay for about £20 that I checked it out for the first time here on youtube, and I've wished I'd kept it ever since. Top tune.

Would I be right in thinking that Tony Blackburn is sitting on the bonnet of a Rover Marauder?
This was a sports car based on the P4 Rover chassis of the 1950's. Only 12 were made.
