THE GREATEST ROCK JAZZ - FUSION L.P. EVER MADE and probably Tommy Bolin's BEST WORK on this LP. Thanks for putting it up on you tube. Sincerely, much gratitude
Cobham was a revolution in those times,i remember a week passed in London in the vynil shops to hear : The NICE(Keith Emerson!!) and the Mahavishnu Birds of fire!!!
What's comparable now: Jamie Cullum,Danilo Perez,Eliane Elias etc...
Aside from all the little things we like to dote on as far as this tune is concerned, I think everyone here does agree that this rocks like few other things do..
I've been listening to music all my life. Particularly jazz and rock. Everyone on this recording is just awesome. The thing that I notice most is this is a Billy Cobham song and this song is awesome. Billy Cobham shows himself right off.
@eugenioescobar Thanks for the name brother..Man have you looked at some of these response to my comment? I think you understood why I made it but none of these guys does. One guy goes so far as to point out when Bolin's solo is, all two minutes of it and my point was that Jan hammer is doing all the rest. People rant and rave about Bolins contribution, but almost never Hammer. And I forgot to say that's Hammer at the beginning too going toe to toe with Cobham. LELAND SKLAR
DoctorEeam : 3:20 that's Jan hammer playing his keyboard like a guitar better than most guitar players will ever hope to be able to play guitar....
I am sorry, but nobody can compare a guitar with a Keyboard and nobody can compare a Keyboard to a Guitar either. Music is no Battleshipe, Music is "Passion"
@DeadBodySoul well see? That's your mistake.i was not comparing to a guitar, i was saying that he plays his keyboard like a guitar.. Jan hammer is KNOWN FOR THAT. Just ask any of the people who have played with him.
I have the utmost respect for Jan Hammer, but I've got my doubts about us folk that jam on this tune confusing Tommy w/ Jan. Minor involvement at most? I beg to disagreee. That groove is a mile wide and I'd give far more credit to Tommy than Jan.
When I first heard this a cousin of mine told me that If I wanted to hear something really cool to go buy it. I went to Uncle John's Records in Sioux City and got it. It totally blew my mind back then and the sound of it with Tommy is absolutely timeless. What a treasure to have left upon this earth in our time.
I also wanted to say we have two members of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra on this album. This is just more evidence of their greatness. I just heard a remake of this tune that Billy did in 2010. You do not miss Bolins' contribution, but Jan Hammer's remains present weather he's there or not, and he was not there. You rock for posting this in it entirety brother!!!
You know what? Its only just now dawning on me after all these years people think that Jan hammer is Tommy Bolin. @ 3:20 that's Jan hammer playing his keyboard like a guitar better than most guitar players will ever hope to be able to play guitar. @ 6:28 that's Hammer again. I'm only saying this because its common to hear the Bolin rave. But the reality is that his contribution is a minor one at the most. Its Billy, Jan, and cant recall the bass players name who make this a thing of greatness.
@DoctorEeam , I'm agree with you, he is Jan Hammer, but in the middle is Tommy Bolin who plays the guitar. By the way, the bass player is Leland Sklar.
@eugenioescobar I remember hearing that Sklar was playing bass for James Taylor at the time. This music fuses rock and jazz like no other, just due to the personnel's styles. Classic. Then on Crosswinds, Cobham brought in John Abercrombie who could sound more like Mclaughlin. Then Cobham hooked up with John Scofield and Mike Stern! Cobham led the fusion revolution like no other. Fusion veering away from jazz and Miles Davis and crashing into Funk and Rock led by Cobham!
@DoctorEeam It seems pretty easy, to me at least, to know who's playing what. The first solo is Bolin's, which although it doesn't have the technique of Jan Hammer's, has got a nice rock feel to it. Hammer's of course is more of a "wow" second solo on the track, (I don't think there was anyone who could bend notes better on a keyboard then him). It's been years since I've heard this and I forgot the trippy intro with the moonscape ambient sounds...great stuff.
@sticktrik Músicos / Personnel: Billy Cobham - Batería, Percusión Tommy Bolin - Guitarra líder Jan Hammer - Piano eléctrico/acústico, Sintetizador Moog Lee Sklar - Bajo eléctrico Joe Farrell - Flauta, Saxófono soprano/alto Jimmy Owens - Fliscorno, Trompeta John Tropea - Guitarra rítmica Ron Carter - Bajo acústico Ray Barretto - Congas .
@DoctorEeam Tommy Bolin start to kicks his soloing at 4:20 and he keeps firing it to 6:25. Then comes Jan Hammer in with his amazing moog-key-stuff. This record Spectrum is one of the most classical fusion-stylish that ever been made and done. And BTW, Leland Sklar IS the bassplayer...
@DoctorEeam You're super right about Hammer sounding like a guitar. But Bolin's solo's first starting @ 4:22 and IMHO it's one of the best fusion guitar solos by guitarist from the world of Rock, who, as I heard once couldn't even read music and the session took longer because Bolin had to be shown what when to play, verbally. A good side by side comparison would be Jeff Beck's fusion material.
I'll take Bolin's work on this CD over Beck anyday. Then Hammer goes off@6:28 like you noted!

This is for me one of the Greatest pieces of Jazz/Rock or Jazz/Fusion as we now know it.
It's Explosive and has been since the year it appeared.. and it doesn't 'age'.
I wouldn't say Tommy Bolin's contribution is minimal as someone said. All the musicians were on song' and sharp!
This was an EPIC LP. And the recording was always excellent -in 1973 and almost 40 years later! Thanks //

I think Jan's mini-moog work on this album and then on Oh Yeah pretty much set the standard. He was the greatest synth soloist ever in my book.

Tommy Bolin's solo is the best solo ever along with Jimi Hendrix's Machine Gun.
R.I.P both
