this is simply amazing, as a jazz person myself... i must say this is perfect. Well done to the guys that composed this wonderful composure of epicness :)
While I get that there is technical facility going on here in spades, a great deal of the time I feel if it were 10bpm slower it would glue together, There are simply times when the ensemble/uni playing is ragged and frenetic for its own sake. It is good but it does not groove as hard as is should. That said the bass is atomic clock steady
@MicheleAndriulli No I can't agree, Cherokee is a test of speed. It's basically a tune that tests whether you can think and create amazing things at high speeds.
Simply amazing. How is it even possible to play such a well build and melodic solo at 300+bpm. The soprano player also completely blew me away. Thank you for sharing these videos.
Bireli is so brilliant here, but we should give a huge credit to the blistering, rock solid framework laid down by Diego and Hono, as well as the compliment of Franck Wolf's playing, for allowing him to shine so brightly.
As an oddball, jazz guitar influenced amateur jazz clarinetist, I have listened to everyone from Wes to Django to Christian to Johnny Smith (remember him?) to Kessel to Martino to Jimmy/Doug Raney to George Benson. In the context, then, of my musical experience, Bireli is an extragalactic freak of nature - like watching someone bench-press 6,000 lbs. He is the guy I would want to turn into in my "walk into a local guitar shop, start noodling and have everyone crap their pants" fantasy.
One more thing: Apart from broad stylistic differences, Bireli strikes me as the Oscar Peterson of the guitar. Its the combination of super-monster chops and an ability to rapidly weave diverse idioms in an out of a solo to staggering effect. This plus the drive, passion and sheer musicality creates the "on the edge of your seat" experience that both these artists exploit to fantastic effect. I saw Bireli live 10 years ago. Right up there for me with having seen Sonny Stitt & Dexter Gordon live.
Biréli's playing on this tune is the complete anthesis of his "wacky for the sake of being wacky" playing on the Autumn Leaves video in the suggestions box to the right. It's what I really love about him is his ability to have immaculate taste when he plays, even when he's suddenly throwing a Cuban rhythm in there at :44 - :51, it's done tastefully and with immaculate style.
the lick at 3.27, did bireli invent that lick? I´ve heard lots of players that sound "bireliesque" that uses it. I´ve never heard anyone before him using it... anyone who knows?^^
Actually it seems to be a widely used gypsy jazz lick or at least used by guitarists who play gypsy jazz and both straightahead.. which is very surprising because of the moderness of the licks nature.
Most badass Langrene solo in there. And yea, shit, SentDeLaRaie, although I agree with the first part of that comment...that has got to be one of the more retarded comments.
