Several times during our two day courses, somebody shows up and asks to drive with the Miatas...often in a very different performance class of car. As a favor, we accommodate them. We've had Ferrari s chased around by some very small Datsuns !.the Ferrari owner just wanted some track time.A little ego play for the Datsun Guys. Drive one..
problem with miatas is that while there are more powerful cars there, they cant take turns like a miata can , while they are slowing down the guy in the miata is giving it gas, sure on a long straight HP wins but these little cars are not to be messed with, my 91 is not that fast but im able to take curves at speeds more expensive and faster car could only dream of doing.

I've got a '92, and of the 30-odd cars I've owned, it's my favorite. While I'd really like at least 75 more HP, this car handles incredibly, the brakes have better feel & modulation than any american car, and the light weight means it's not only capable & fun, it gets great gas mileage as well, and is incredibly reliable. It also looks good; I think if they had named it something better than "Miata" it wouldn't be looked down upon so much. "Miata" is not a manly name. :)

It's a stock 4 cylinder Miata engine. It is a spec race class that dos not allow for any modifications to the engine. It does have race suspension though.
@BrandonHower you shouldnt be a fool. The only thing thats done to these miatas as far as the engine is straight piped and in some cases a makeshift intake. Its a spec miata class just like what was said above. Look it up of google, pretty easy. Do some research nxt time

I own a Pro7 RX-7 and run it in Group 4 with NASA. I belive this to be the pedesesor to the Miata... point being they ARE a blast to drive at speed. @BaddieAss The average spec-Miata racer makes a six-figure salary (SCCA member statistics). A season of racing is shockingly expensive, regardless of the machine.
It's definitely tight quarters, and contact does happen quite often (I'm actually surprised there wasn't any during this battle, especially when you watch the tail end of the RX7 wagging as it's going through those corners!).
They are actually mostly very good drivers at this level of racing, even though it's amateurs just out having fun. You get to know all the other drivers, so you tend to get along pretty well.
J, the video shows cars on a race track, not on the street. You have chosen to make a statement that really applys to street driven cars, a race car only has to do a few things well to win go fast, turn well and brake without fail. You are the one that chose to use the "F bomb" for what reason I don't know. If this was a street video then I would say you have a point. Happy motoring!

It looks like the drivers of the "cheapo cars" are way better drivers than of the Ferrari. @ 0:13 to 0:33 you can see the skills of the drivers. In a race, you need to be comfortable with the fact that at any moment, you could be rubber-side up.

ephidapoon is actually 100% correct, if you think SCCA and NASA racers aren't competitive, you need to come out for a weekend.. it doesn't get much more competitive (it's a far cry from a weekend track day). And you do have to race with complete confidence, and with the understanding that at times your car is going to get damaged. If you don't, you need to me happy with being a mid-pack dirver.
Not sure what he was running, should be pretty stock though. This is sanctioned SCCA racing so has pretty strict rules. Note the tail of the RX7 sliding a bit through turn 2, that's the way those cars race, the tail end is always wagging.
Is that Carol Hollfelder in the Ferrari? I know she used to race a Ferrari. She uses hand controls. Ferrari's are hard enough to shift without the hand controls. I almost nailed her in Turn 9 at Willow Springs in my ITC Rabbit.
Looks like quite a twisty course, probably why the MX5's had such an advantage. Pity help yez on the next decent straight where the Camaro and Ferrari could cut loose!

I own a Pro7 RX-7 and run it in Group 4 with NASA. I belive this to be the pedesesor to the Miata... point being they ARE a blast to drive at speed. The Miata has mega horspower compared to the 96 h.p. of the 12B rotary engine. Can you say "momentum cars"? That's what these are and they are a blast. Oh yah, mine is for sale. $2000. It's definitely tight quarters, and contact does happen quite often (I'm actually surprised there wasn't any during this battle, especially when you watch the tail end of the RX7 wagging as it's going through those corners!).
They are actually mostly very good drivers at this level of racing, even though it's amateurs just out having fun. You get to know all the other drivers, so you tend to get along pretty well.

J, the video shows cars on a race track, not on the street. You have chosen to make a statement that really applys to street driven cars, a race car only has to do a few things well to win go fast, turn well and brake without fail. You are the one that chose to use the "F bomb" for what reason I don't know. If this was a street video then I would say you have a point. Happy motoring!

There is no way I would risk banging up my ferrari at an amateur race with alot of cheapo cars on the side. There is also no way of telling the skill of the driver. So I tihink youll find any direct comparison would be... wrong.

It looks like the drivers of the "cheapo cars" are way better drivers than of the Ferrari. @ 0:13 to 0:33 you can see the skills of the drivers. Any rookie would have panicked and crashed the lot of them. Also anyone that races wheel 2 wheel accepts that there will be "banging" of cars from time to time and can afford to repair the damage. If you have ever driven on a race track you would know that.

J, the facts are the Miata is a better handling car in race tune. If it were a case of "brave" in a cheaper car the guy in a Camaro should have passed all of them, we all know what they are worth. The video shows the drivers skill and confidence when racing next to each other. Racing wheel to wheel is not about how fast you can go in a straight line. J, have you ever been on a race track?

To be competitive you need to let go of the fear of damaging your car. You can take my word for it, or ask anyone that owns a racecar or is on a team. Racing is rough and tumble, kid. Your car does get beat up. Therefore, if you can't race with confidence, you won't be competitive, and you shouldn't be racing to begin with! In a race, you need to be comfortable with the fact that at any moment, you could be rubber-side up.

Its called mixed class racing, where you have multiple classes of cars racing at the same time, competitively. Yup, spec miatas pass v8's (like that 348) all the time. Its probably an SCCA or NASA event.

J! It is you that is so misinformed, if you would have read the author's comments its a race! The SCCA and NASA have races almost every week end, this is not a track day. Track day drivers don't as aggressive as shown in the video. Your much vaunted Ferrari is not the fasted around a curve. I am still waiting for your answer if your have ever driven on a real race track, have you, do you own a Ferrari? Stop bench racing and go out and driver a real car on a real track and tell me how it feels.

ephidapoon is actually 100% correct, if you think SCCA and NASA racers aren't competitive, you need to come out for a weekend.. it doesn't get much more competitive (it's a far cry from a weekend track day). And you do have to race with complete confidence, and with the understanding that at times your car is going to get damaged. If you don't, you need to me happy with being a mid-pack dirver.

Not sure what he was running, should be pretty stock though. This is sanctioned SCCA racing so has pretty strict rules. Note the tail of the RX7 sliding a bit through turn 2, that's the way those cars race, the tail end is always wagging.

Is that Carol Hollfelder in the Ferrari? I know she used to race a Ferrari. She uses hand controls. Ferrari's are hard enough to shift without the hand controls. I almost nailed her in Turn 9 at Willow Springs in my ITC Rabbit.

It was a little while ago, but I think this was NASA racing in Northern California, PTE class. I race both NASA and SCCA so this was either the NASA PTE or SCCA ITA class.
