i think trapping works against pushes or some1 trying to grab u, not really against a trained puncher tho. i can see it being useful in the clinch. but hey, im no expert.
But what happens if the opponent isn't playing 'pattycake' with you? What if he has no desire to slap hands, but simply wants to knock yo ass out? This 'trapping' stuff only works with someone willing to play it with you.
@talon115 The main purpose is to get the timing and distance when someone is punching...Trap and counter at the same time which catches them off guard and balance...Same premise as pad work but using the human body.If someone comes to straight knock someone out than he will be easier to counter because their movements will be projected in their posture...The Way of the Intercepting Fist
@talon115 ...also Sifu Lee Che Kong (Ip Man's student) says "...when you go out in the street, who is going to do Wing Chung with you? ... you need to learn to break down a technique to use against any technique".
@talon115 well the first principle is to knock the other fuker out first this is just to say" if he puts hsi hands up in ur way the ur lead power is being bridge or just a slight touched tah were u move the oppenents hands out of way so tah tu lead power can continute thru" in this case ur oppnents lead is parrying to the outside and or inside just rolling it allows u to continute with as much force as before and not need to draw back the and to wind up
Vunak or some of his top guys are probably the best examples. It why Vunak plays the drums while people train. Some of the Kali styles (not all) use it too.
1.Bruce did not do a lot of good films. He only did 4films and only the two last ones was good the other two was shit.
2.Bruce Lee did not create one-inch punch or the principal of Intercepting! Those techniques existed in Wing Chun long before Bruce even was born!
3.Bruce lee didnt understand any of the old martial arts ways. He totally misunderstood Kata and could not separate training for fighting from actually fighting!
Let me tell you something about Bruce Lee: 1.Bruce did just one film: Enter The Dragon. And with ONE film change forever face of the martial arts movies.
2. Wing Chun Bruce did not create one-inch punch or the principal of Intercepting! Those techniques existed in Shaolin long before Wing Chun even was born!
3.The followers of Bruce Lee totally misunderstood Kata! Im one of them and I can say this after I loose many years with this kind of training.
To see broken rhythm in a real fight, look into boxers and fencers who are the people who Bruce learned this concept from. In my opinion not many people in the MA world use it which is why Bruce didn't learn it from martial artist.
I wish a jkd teacher would break down "broken rythem" and show how it can be used in other arts. That has been a jkd subject I have not explained with movement when they talk about it its always about Bruce! Was this a skill only Bruce perfected or can us mere mortals learn it?
"The movements of attacking and defending work almost in rhythm w/ each other...If the rhythm [of a fight] has been well established, there is a tendency to continue in the sequence of the movement...The man who can break this rhythm by a light hesitation or an unexpected movement can now score an attack or counterattack w/ only moderate speed; his opponent is motorset to continue w/ the previous rhythm & before he can adjust himself to the change, he has been hit."
thanks you and I have the book but this really needs to be seen for me to totally understand. Has there been any recorded "real fights" that show someone using this philosophy . For Example the only time I have seen a modified version of the straight blast in combat has been in the UFC and I really don't think they thought it out like that...It was done by Anderson Silva vs Chris Leben and Vitor Belfort vs Wandala Silva....but I have never seen broken rhythm
Neither have I, come to think of it. I mean, according to its definition any feint before an attack-anything that throws an opponent off balance before a strike (even the speed of the strike itself)-would be broken rhythm. So maybe we've seen it in that light. But you're right, I'd like to see an instructor show it. We'll just have to keep looking, I guess.

@talon115 Its important to not confuse "techniques" from trapping, with "drills" from trapping.

@talon115 At which point the "clinch" is indispensable.
