  • u rock! awesome beginner lessons

  • what ride ???

  • i thought it was "Shoot the cow"

  • very helpfull...thanks

  • this guy actually helped not like those expert village butt wipe videos

  • Great playing.

  • Great Advice on just playing the ride, for me that really helped me, still working on it though, but really then I noticed I can really break down the 1/4 notes you said was the beat, pretty cool thankyou

  • Very helpful! I've been drumming for 9 years and I'm just now learning jazz. What else should I work on to start out playing jazz?

  • No! no no no... I'm sorry but no.

  • Tim, you have some great videos up. A lot of the other "Jazz" instruction vids I see on You Tube are a joke. Lots of bad information for anyone trying to get into Jazz drumming. You are the real deal! Keep spreading the TRUTH!!

  • Thanks man! Really helpful!

  • I sampled your ride, Hope it's okay?:)

    Nice video, tnx!

  • I made a mistake in the text I just wrote. I said ( "NOT" the 3rd note of the triplet.") Deleat the word ''not". I meant, yes, the 3d note of the triplet before the quarter note. How do YOU do this note??? Thank You

  • Played many years. I have had technique trouble with how to do the skip note. (ie. the third not of the triplet.) Iv'e experimente for a year. How do you make this happen without dragging the following quarter note off meator??? Could you give a VERY VERY detailed close up/angles and despriction of all the movement of your fingers hand and and wrist. PLEASE show this in moderate to very very quick tempos. I realize it may vary with the person, but how do YOU do it ???Thank You!!!!!!

  • instead of saying spang spangalang, try tom go to bed go to bed go to bed

  • rofl at the example :P

  • Thanx so much Tim, like your playing so much too :)

  • can you spell the names of the artists you said for me

  • Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, Philly Jo Jones

  • nice simple vid.. what's the outro tune? I'm always looking for great jazz tunes and I like the sound of that guitar...

  • i like your hat!!

  • such a smooth sound.. thanks for playing this. Im gonna set out to buy me one =P

  • i enjoyed the video. i was impressed by the warm sound of the ride. what brand and model is the ride?

  • Gorgeous sound.

  • nice ride!!! can i have more information about the ride??

  • i have no idea anything about this guy (except he played a sick beat at the beginning!), but just looking at and hearing the ride, i would say it is a 'natural sabian vault artisan light right'

please correct me if im wrong, i dont want to give out bad info.

  • Yep, according to Sabian's website it's an artisian light 22"

  • It is an Artisan light ride 22"

  • It's lovely

  • hi there, great drumming btw

i was always told to keep my right hand flat when playing the ride to avoid strains and stuff. it seems to suit your playing holding them the other way, but does it really matter?

  • its ok to use french grip if you're using your fingers.. one u use alot of wrist, german grip is better to prevent strain...

  • i agree... awesome ride.. there are rivets in it right?

  • Thanks! There were two rivets in it when I shot the video, but I have since reduced it to one.

  • Cymbals and drums please !!

  • @tim481 when you are in a room to yourself playing a sizzler type cymbal,a lot of rivets can be a bit much!

so true WTG man! i like it.

  • Great sounding ride there

  • why do U accent the 2 and 4? If you listen to the Kind of Blue disc Cobb is not accenting his 2 and 4. is accented by the hi hat... Let's talk about that please

  • Well, 2 and 4 on the hi hat is part of the jazz swing pattern. You can vary it up though. 2 and 4 with your left foot makes it easier to hear the pulse. BTW, if you listen closely, you can hear Cobb play on 2 and 4 on that album; it's just subtle.

  • R u using a sizzler or rivets because i hear a buzz/sizzle

  • for super fast double time bebop do u bounce the stick or play with fingers? like tempos 170bpm up. dave weckl can play doubletime bebop for like an hour without getting tired. is he bouncing the stick on the ride?

  • Third stone from the sun...!!!!

  • Obviously a lot depends on what you're playing at the time , but as general rule , I don't agree with emphasizing 2 & 4 on the ride ; all four quarter notes drive the music forward , so why mess with things ?

  • Nice ride!

  • Excellent stuff. Tim your'e doing a great job... more please !

    Cheers

  • what kind of ride cymbal is that?

  • any zildjian k or k custom dry or dry complex ride will give you a similar sound

  • 10 seconds in, I LOVE THE HAT! Spang a lang, lol, I use 10 to 2.

  • Bravo!

  • spang a lang... lol

  • wicked man

  • WHAT A GROOVY DRUMMER.

  • Has anybody heard of Jim Blackley, his book "Essence of Jazz Drumming" is a real eye opener for developing jazz time and the correct articulation to develop a swinging time feel. Like in this great video, he covers the most basic time playing exercises, right through to playing complex 3 and 5 beat figures superimposed in 4/4. Check it out!!!

  • Good intro video Tim. Looking forward to seeing your other vids - big jazz buff and beginning drummer

  • mmm thanks, can you make a video on advanced jazz. Cover the ghost notes you play on the snare, they really make the jazz style groove,

  • a true gentleman, thankyou for this

  • Your suggestion to play the ride alone is right on. I did the same thing and found great results. I believe it is because when you use the hi-hat it beoomes a sotrt of crutch to anchor down the time. The time should come from the ride so I think this isolates that.

  • Put on a jazz tune, and only play the ride, or set your click to 60, and count THAT as 2 and 4...play jazz time to that.

  • It's okay to be bald.

  • @telemark326 He's not bald, dude. Tim is my drummer and I can attest. Nice, BTW...

  • and you use the arm the wrist or the finger for the 1, 2, 3, 4 .. or you accentuate the 2 and the 4 with something special ?

by the way thanks to answer me youre really gentle ...and thats hard to me to explain this ... i try lol

    thanxs dude bye

    and "vive tony" ^^

  • euhhh ... for me its not right ./. it happens, but its not a fact that a jazzman can play everything styles of music ... for me groove and jazz are a little bit different ...

however, tim, i dont really understood your tip for my "check technique" ...

I use a snapping motion in the right hand with little to no arm movement. (while playing time) ...

can you translate for a french guy like me ? ^^

i understood the snapping motion (i think thats the"and "of the1,2and,3,4and

  • if you play jazz you play everything...

  • very true. most other styles will come easier. jazz is a very difficult style

  • its logically ...

and sory for the 2 messages ...^^

bye and great job again !

  • hi tim !

fist of all, thanx for the details! i like your sound very well ..

then, i would like to know how you worked on your drive .. how you maked it swing like that, coz im trying hard to do that! but its a great tip to accentuate the 2 and 4, even though

  • Thanks for the kind words! There are a number of ways to work on your time feel. Here are a few I suggest:

First, play along and listen to as much Tony Williams as you can. No one drives a band like him.

Second, try practicing with a metronome on beats 2 and 4 while playing ever so slightly ahead of the beat and right on it.

Finally, check your technique. I use a snapping motion in the right hand with little to no arm movement. (while playing time)

    Hope this helps,

    -Tim

  • what cymabal is it ?

    coz im in love ...

    great drive

  • Thanks! It is a 22" Sabian Artisan Light Ride. I have drilled it out for two rivets. I use the Bosphorus brass rivets as I think they give a lighter sizzle than the standard metal ones. My other ride is a 20" Sabian Artisan Light ride no rivets and, 13" HHX Manhattan Jazz hats. Hope this helps!

    Tim

  • really great video ... exactly all the tips i needed. suggesting who to listen was also really useful..10x!

  • i love your ride!
