when you listen to power electronics harsh noise etc for the first time your brain should instantly reject what you're hearing. it's been conditioned since before you were borne to search for patterns and harmony and rhythm and to find comfort in those things. after a surprisingly short time you will find yourself able to break out of these constraints and every little sound you hear for the rest of your life in all your environments will sound like a new song and a new expression of existence
Whitehouse was boring and unoriginal when I first heard them 30+ years ago, and their work has not improved with age. It's still crap and easily dismissed.
@manwithcam Reseda in the mid-80s was a cultural mecca for the valley, thank goodness. Got introduced to great punk bands and avant-garde bands thanks to Rich of BeBop and the Country Club
It is extremely hard to believe this is Reseda!!! As it is now a shithole. The Country Club btw, is now a church!!! I cannot wait to get the hell out of here......
@16NostalgicdreamS It was run down in the 80s, too. Grew up in Northridge in the 80s....finally escaped the clutches of SFV banality in 2004....I'll never live in a conventional suburb again...fuck that.
@vaguelyhumanoid Oh, when I got into Whitehouse they were already under Susan Lawly. Well, «under» is not the correct word, as they *are* SL. Or is, now.
@lutherblissett3 Maybe that's the point of noise music, to be as loud and offensive as possible and to really deliver the true power of sound. To enjoy it you really do have to drop all normality. Music for the free minded. I can't listen to it all the time but when I do it's a amazing experience.
To me, even the harshest noise has to make some sense... Regarding Whitehouse's extreme noise/sex/fart terror, the irony is, they're still too human to express the pain and obscenity by throwing it all into the listeners' faces... To some degree I can say I 'respect' their crass attitude, but sound as they produce it, well everyone tries that thing every once and awhile. Just grab a mic, turn up the amplifiers and ask yourself: what's the point? ... and someone might even say it is 'art'.
this cannoe be music, seriously common, its sheer screaching and ear ripping sounds made for torture or sumthing. There's never 1 dubious note or anything, its atrocious. Meaby the oh so savy classy bohemians find music it in cuz after listening to it you wouldnt ever be able to hear real music again. there's soo much wrong about this "band genre" i cant even begin to start. Im suprised people clapped at the end and rather didnt applaud by using broken foghorns or sumthing.
One day - in the future - a retrospective will identify the importance of Whitehouse as an artistic and social movement ...
Even if you do not like it at least give them credit for sticking at it for so many years (What? you did not know they had been active for nearly 30 years? Well you have no right to comment then)
I'm sure theres musical genius going over my head... and I'm open minded at all this sort of thing... but I honestly just hear feedback and see some tit striking poses and screaming.
I was actually at this show, it was at a place called BeBop Records, and I was 17. My friend Brad Laner (then of Debt of Nature, later of Medicine and Electric Company) had turned me on to them. This vid reflects a bit of the aural pain, and I really appreciated the dynamic simplicity of the visual presentation. Overall it was pretty astonishing.
I like how they always have to hunch over the synths like they're actually doing something...putting a brick down on the keys would give you the same effect.
Needs more cowbell.
