it was Prince, but i guess since meli'sa did such a good job, a lot of ppl aren't sure, plus i think her version is a bit more radio friendly lol... I've heard her version on the radio more often than Prince... probably because of obvious reasons.

Prince wrote & recorded it..in the early 80's..this is a great cover..it was said that he recorded this song in the studio(I guess Paisley Park) dimly lit with candles....

@deere772d PRINCE wrote and sang it for his Controversy album in '81 or '82 (i forget when it was released). But his version has a faster tempo and piano. Plus the way he sang it was really sexual with moans, grunts, and yells at the end. I don't remember it getting any radio play when I was younger. But then this version came out in like '85 or '86 and it was more soulful like a ballad so it got a lot of radio play and people kind of forgot that it was Prince's song. YouTube his version.

This is one of the very few (if not only) remakes that I feel totally shits on the original. Prince's version is o.k., but this version is flawless, raw, and untouchable. No one can sing this song like Meli'sa, not even the creator.
