@SouLoveReal She may have been a Republican back then, but she wouldn't be now. Miss Pearl was nobody's fool. She could spot a phoney a mile a way, and a lot of todays so called Republicans are not true American's but sell outs that are willing to sell the country to the highest bidder.
@SouLoveReal Absolutely. That was back when Republicans were concerned with the public good. Back then they knew if the people were doing well the businesses would thrive. 'Trickle Down' theory hadn't done its damage yet! Pearl was a great ambassador to Africa. Her "Bags of Beans' campaign was an intelligent and creative way to help starving people survive. (Kinda off topic but interesting trivia..)
I met Pearl Bailey in 1990 just before she died. She was most interseting and is a classy person! I was lucky enough to get my picture taken with her!
You are indeed lucky!!!! I know that the last time I saw her was on TV. The Pat Sajak Show..., then on CNN on at the White House, it was a shock that she died. But she didn't seem too well on the Sajak Show..... I missed out on seeing her in Maine in 1989, there was a weekend gig with her and Sarah Vaughan (both died in 1990). I am remissed. Why can't these talents still exist today?
D & M looked totally awe-struck. Thanks for the posting. I can hear my dad saying "There, Thats a singer". Had to keep it on my favs list - for my dad, miss you.
My god thank you for posting this!!!!!!!! It's hard finding Pearl. I miss her. I remember one of her last appearances on the Pat Sajack Show. I saw that and thought to myself oops My god she's leaving. All she wanted help her fellow man. The books, a two time graduate of college , her work for the U.N. I'm dumbfounded why it's so hard to find her recordings.
I have to disagree. You have to watch this video very carefully -- it's a nuanced and moving performance in the old style -- like a Judy Garland piece, with intensity and emotion. Watch the respect and awe in Donny's face. He's a professional from an early age, and he recognizes skill when he sees it. She plays the audience like a violin, with pauses and cracks in her voice which speak eloquently of an older woman passing on wisdom to the youngsters. I find this piece very moving.
Wonderful performance and song!

Dang, this actually brought me to tears! Good thing Donny was on that stage instead of me, I would've been a sobbing mess on TV.
