  • nothing compared to the original.

  • the first pophouse song. it was a great success.

  • i much prefer joe smooths promised land!

  • Yazz !!!

  • freak scene!

  • Damn, but I really miss that foxy little Kiwi,Harriet Wheeler...

  • wow! what a blast from the past. I loved the ITV chart show. no crappy presenter chatting shit throughtout the show ... just great music supported by a simple computer graphics system!! those were the days

  • I was 15 whan this was all about & no one told me what a Indie chart was until I found out it ment Independant. Sorry But I hadnt a clue. Loved S'Express!!

  • Have you got a copy of the first Indie chart on The Chart Show that was aired on ITV on 21st January 1989 which had New Order and The House of Love being played or not. I remember there was one on 22nd October 1988 with Wedding Present's 'So Are You Reasonable Now' being played and that was aired on ITV.

  • I used to have it somewhere (although on the version I had, they only played The House of Love). Unfortunately, it seems to be lost.

  • I've seen it recently and uploaded the video what I saw of it and yes the House of Love was only played and New Order was at number 1 !!!

  • The Sundays were fucking brilliant.

  • has anyone got the first Indie Chart of the ITV?

  • I used to have it, but it's gone walkabout. I've turned this place upside down looking for it, and I'm sure it must have gone missing in the last house move.

I can tell you for a fact that the only song they played in it was The House of Love's "Destroy The Heart" which was going back up the chart again, and that New Order's "Fine Time" was at number one.

  • That would be the second time they got played, as they were played with Bomb The Bass: 'Don't make me wait' on the Indie Chart of 19th August 1989. I'm surprised that with Erasure at #1 for several weeks in The Top Ten in January 1989, TCS didn't have them firmly pinned to the top of the Indie Chart. Did TCS, TOTP or anyone else ever show anything else from the 'Crackers International EP' apart from 'Stop!'? New Order: 'Technique' was the first New Order album I ever heard.

  • wot a great world we lived in

    1989

    tj

  • That S'Xpress video is superb. You have Mark Moore looking camper than a commandant, Erik before he went on to form Eric & The Good Good Feeling, and none other than Germany's Billie Ray Martin! love the cow at the end as well.

  • pretty good version of the Joe Smooth club classic...any have a copy of the ( as i recall) unreleased "house" album Weller and co were supposed to have released to support this single , but was shelved by the record company signalling the end of the style council?

  • i must admit, mr. wellers most touched me with "our favourite shop", cafe bleu was brilliant as well - why this one?

  • Good to see Weller and Mikey T 'blacking up' for that little civil rights number. Pretty dated now!!!! Anyone remember the 'Mick Talbot Fanclub' regular pisstake featue in the back pages of melody maker?

  • Stupenda....

  • He really had fun in the 90's

  • ITV3 should repeat this

  • BIG Thanks for posting one of the BEST club songs from the 90's. I remember being in the Philly scene then and running to the dancefloor when the DJ threw this one on!

AWESOME POST. . .KEEP 'EM COMING! THANKS!

  • This is the first ever Indie Chart on the ITV Chart Show (21st January 1989)

  • Oops i am wrong. This isn't the first Indie Chart on the ITV Chart Show. This Indie Chart is actually from February 1989.

  • As a thank you to 23Daves for all his work I'm slowly working my way through his clips year-by-year to correctly date them. I thhought this was the first Indie Chart of the ITV Chart Show era, but S-Express's 'Hey music lover' was released in February 1989. Therefore this Indie Chart is 11th February 1989.

  • Have you got a copy of the first Indie chart on The Chart Show that was aired on ITV on 21st January 1989?

  • I'm afraid I don't have the first indie chart on ITV. I think I remembered that they played House of Love. Also I think Erasure was number 1, although they played something different. I guess they might have played new order

  • I have seen the first indie chart (21/01/89) on the ITV Chart Show at the BFI (British Film Institute) 3 days ago. I've uploaded the video what I saw at the BFI !!!!

  • 23Daves... I tip my hat to you for even posting this version. So much controversy... so much hate at the time of it's release that the message was completely lost.

  • grandioso paul weller ...

  • That guy from Loop has fantastic cheekbones... (Real profound comment from me, huh)

I can't remember being a fan of any of Yazz's other songs but I do really like "Fine Time". And I like the pop-up boxes - okay, maybe nostalgia plays a big part in this...

Hmm, I wonder how that Style Council song did in the charts? I must check my British Book of Hit Singles...

  • made about 20 to 23 put a fiver on it rosaquartz. do you take that bet rosaquartz?

  • I love it, thanks for this great great song!!!!!!!

  • listen .... la versione dei Re Jazz .. è meravigliosa .. ma su youtube non si trova .

  • S-EXPRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • style council do joe smooth pure class bring back house music

  • Weller ha ha!!

  • Turntable Orchestra - the small bit heard - what a dreadful mess.

  • Eh? What do you mean? That was a good song - especially the Spanglish telephone conversation halfway through it...

  • Yay! Freak Scene!

  • HA HA HA!!! It's the Paul Weller euro house years! When he's peddling his "Modfather" image, he forgets that the Style Council suddenly went all Giorgio Moroder!

  • Oh, and it's interesting to note that there are two completely different songs in this chart called Fine Time - wonder how many other instances there were of this in any of the charts?

    Chris

  • The amiga info boxes are what made the show.

  • The seemingly incongruous presence of Yazz, Erasure etc in the indie chart was due to the Chart Show sticking with the technical definition of indie (independent label), not NME definition (skinny boys with guitars). So you had mainstream pop acts and dance outfits next to obscure acts only John Peel would have heard of - a truly eclectic chart. And you have to wonder why they didn't get rid of the rewinding sooner, ditto the intrusive Amiga info boxes (not ditched till 1996!).

    Chris

  • The Chart Show originally included all the PWL acts in their Indie Chart, so you had Kylie and Jason amongst the 'typical' indie music! But I remember they quietly dropped the PWL acts after a time from the Indie Charts.

  • Must've taken a bit of effort to rewind and fast-foward like that.

  • Chart Show 1989 - Brilliant! All that rewinding they used to do. Indie Chart with Yazz - Sounds weird. Remember Fine Time by New Order - LOved that song. Hated The Sundays song though.
