I was in your concert on Thursday, 2.2 in Helsinki. The concert was great, and it was amazing to hear that less often played concerto! And Chopin nocturne was absolutely awesome. The only thing that was left me to carve, because I didn't come to talk to u and ask for autograph on the bus on the way to the airport. I was in the bus :). First I didn't believe that you would be there, and when u were taking ur colorful suitcase, i realized it is really Valentina! Thanks alot from coming to Finland
@Gladixful I was at the concert too - though on Wednesday 1.2. The concerto was very beautiful indeed! Hopefully Valentina shall visit Finland again. :-)
@mikerosepro but why quibble over details when it's the overall arc of the utterance and its effective rendering that matters most? what's a few missed steps on the ascent to olympus? attribute it to a sticky keyboard and half a pint.
Your insensitivity means you failed to notice that my quibble should have been a sharply-pointed objection to your original hopelessly-hypocritical remark. If you insist on selfishly quaffing ale before opening your mind instead of spilling the lot over the keyboard.... at least have the decency if you're sober to beg forgiveness from the artist you're gratuitously rude to .
Valentina's incomparable playing takes endless hours of hard work: you appreciate neither
@mikerosepro believe you me, yout feeble attempt at being subtly sarcastic with your original "quibble" was not lost on me. there was nothing hypocritical about my original comment. it was an opinion and to "beg forgiveness" would be hypocritical. I don't deny the endless hours of hard work she has had to expend, but her playing is NOT incomparable. My opinion of her playing is bolstered by the fact that she frequently "favorites" her own performances, which I find rather distasteful.
@utubuser10 You know Valentina probably does not run this youtube channel herself and the fact that a video she made was favorited does not provide a valid basis in which to say her playing lacks depth and profoundness.
@MsFloopdedoop the primary "basis" for my opinion of her playing is -- her playing. as i said before, it's only bolstered by her penchant for listing her own videos as her favorites. none of the many other creative artists i follow on yt ever favorite their own work. it's a little gauche, in my opinion.
@VictorDanDan We all have inflated esteems of what we ourselves can do but to be 'honest' and proffer that opinion to the rest of the world is indicative of one who is somewhat challenged in sophistication and decorum -- a simpleton.
Ah-h-h.... so your "self-serving and opportunistic" was an understandable case of not realizing that the YT "favorite" facility simply records creative Youtubers' personal interests, incl least-favorite vids

Valentina is not self-serving or opportunistic. Don't be ridiculous ^_^ There's nothing wrong with enjoying your own playing. In fact, if you didn't like how you sounded playing the piano, and your a professional pianist, there'd be a serious problem, wouldn't there?
In my opinion, her playing IS incomparable. She has a musical quality as a performer that enraptures me. If you prefer others, that's fine, but she is worthy of being considered the best.
@ShayLeSaligo I have seen people comment that Rachmaninoff played his own music 'too fast' ... If you watch closely you will see that Val changes her pace; not only within the piece but between pieces. Is there an exact pace for Allegro, or does the player get to use their own interpretation?
@marisolurrutia : Yes, or one of the best of all time. Perhaps the only thing that separates her from a Rachmaninoff or a Schubert or a Liszt is that she mostly just plays their compositions and does them great honour in the process.
@ValentinaLisitsa While I do agree that analogue has a more better interpretation in the warmth of a sound, especially on the low end, I think it is all lost on vinyl (PVC) -- a cheap plastic. I love that poem and this music is as always out of this wolrd in both interpretation and composition... Valentina I saw your concert in August in Bogotá, Colombia, can't wait!!! I'll be saving money just to go to see you that night!
Wonderful --- but it only makes me long all the more for Valentina to play Oriental Sketch- Rachmaninov - which it remotely resembles. Also - will you ever re-issue your black and pink DVD? I want to buy it.
@ValentinaLisitsa Amazing! Is there any chance you can come and play the Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool while you're in England? There's a choice of 3 Steinway concert grands.
I won't be able to get to London :-( being a broke student and all . . . ( not that I'm suggesting you come for just me ;-) ) Liverpool would love you!
And thank you for all the quality free music you post for us on YouTube!
Hello ! I perfer the version of Yuja Wang, more psychedelic and less romantic, but i swear i'm not the one who "dislike" yours. I love you and you'r marvelous :)
Your interpretation makes me laugh out loud, not because it is funny but because it is so full of artistic spirit that it baffles, intrigues, excites, and fills me with joy all at the same time. That is such a funny combination that I end up just shaking my head and laughing after nearly every clip.
I love your playing. Your playing speed and sharpness in every tone you play ^^ especially Rachmaninoff prelude in g sharp minor op #32 and Beethovens "Moonlight" Sonata op 27 # 2 Mov 3. Do you have any advice for those who plays piano, or a wisdom ? ^^
Hi Valentina, you are my favourite living pianist! Your interpretations are amazing. I hope you will someday come to Atlantic Canada.
On IMSLP there is a version of Erlkonig that was edited by Jan Paderewski and contains ossia passages. Is that the "lite" version that you were looking for? Which version did you play? It sounds incredible!
I was just listening to this from Kissin and some other girl and thinking, I wish Berozovsky or you would play it.
I like you dynamics more than any other version I heard so far.
But I can't make out the part where the boy says "Mien Father, Mien Father", or it sounds like your playing the other half of the melody with your right hand.
So with your version is sound like "Mien Father, Father" instead of "Mien Father, Mien Father" (I know I have my German wrong) it that a liberty you took.
Bravo, une fois de plus. A quand la suite des sonates de Beethoven, jouées et filmées de cette manière? Je reste sur votre dernière interprétation de l'appassionata, une véritable merveille, mais il y en a d'autres... Merci, vous êtes géniale
I always was like "It would be really interesting to hear Valentina interpreting the Erlkönig".
I like your recording very much! I don't understand the poem until yet, some say that it's about a deathly disease of a father's son, some say it's about sexual abuse. How do you understand the poem, Valentina?
Never trust pshychologists about poetry :-) IMHO it is just about wat it is. The child is dying and therefore can see the Erlkönig (Death). Erlkönig wants the boy (to die) and begs, charmes and threatens it to come to him. The father desperately tries to get to safety to save his child (the running horse is everywhere in the piece). In the way Valentina plays you can hear the growing desperation of the father as the music gets more and more urgent until, in the end, all is in vain.
Stunning! great technique. i'd like 2 hear a little more contrast between the 3 voices. here they sound much alike--but maybe it's the mic? I had an interesting experience with this piece. As a singer & pianist, I often accompany myself. I came across this n my Schubert piano anthology. Thought: great & started playing. 1/2 way thru, my hand were about 2 fall off--I thought, what the heck? Had to quit. Then noticed it was the L. transcrptn! Great job Valentina on a devilishly, hard, piece.
Valentina, I'm so thankful for this video! You just made my day!
I like to think of Erlkönig as an opera for one singer. The problem is that most pianists forget the original poem when playing Liszt's transcription, and consider only the virtuosic nature of the piece. You are one of the few pianists that play this incredibly difficult piece with a different sound and a different mood for each one of the four characters (father, son, Erlkönig and narrator).
Valentina Lisitsa Thank You for all of your generosity. I hope you are a YouTube partner because I would like it if I was helping to support your career one view at a time.
I always instantly like the video even when I haven't watched it yet because I know all of Valentina's piano pieces are always at the top notch end in performance.
I was anticipating the arrival of this awesome piece it is truly epic! I love your playing Valentina and you should really play this at your next concert in June. At the end of your playing in my head there were sounds of a massive applause, great job as always Valentina! :D
Beautiful as ever. An exceillant performance! Thank you for sharing this grand performance version of Erlkoing with people. You are a healing angle Valentina. ;)
@ValentinaLisitsa: Next summer I'll be in London for you and I think I should get a ticket while there are still available. Can you please give us a link to a trusted ticket-selling website?
OK, I'm going to get hate mail for this. I loved it and you played it brilliantly. But now I can't get these recurring visions of Charlie Chaplin and the Keystone Cops out of my head :-)
OMG i love this piece, im currently learning it :D sooooo hard but such a nice piece to play, i also love the original operatic version composed to the poem, i love the countertenor David Dq Lee singing this piece. would you recommend it as a piece for me to play during my grade 8 exam????????
@allthenamesrtook Absolutely ! You know the secret about this piece? It is much easier to play on stage than at home :-) When adrenaline kicks in those repeated octaves just fly >>>>
@ValentinaLisitsa AHA you make it sound so easy aha, thanks for the advice, i love listening to you play, its so faithful to the score but always has your own touch and i cant help but smile when u play. :) hoping to be as good as you one day :p
@ValentinaLisitsa: I was wondering... After the Liszt Project are you considering a Beethoven Project, maybe? I'd do anything to have his sonatas performed by you! :D
@ValentinaLisitsa Play Erlkonig as part of a Schubert/Liszt set (no one can touch you in this repertory) to start recital. Then play Ave Maria as an encore (like a pleasant, but delayed echo) to bring audience full circle back to magical opening moments. They will go crazy after this, so prepare to play many more encores! I will forward you my "wish list" of encores later.
@ValentinaLisitsa Sorry for the delay. I was traveling. I thought about your question a lot. The Royal Albert has its acoustic problems -- but nothing you and the Bosy can't conquer! Der Erlkonig, Ballade 2 ( I heard you play live), and even though I'm sure you are tired of it, no one alive plays Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata as passionately and assuredly as you. You play it as if he were next to you. Can't wait to hear you.
Thxs for the English trans - again! Interesting energy in a piece with such a maudlin and pessimistic theme - kind of where Schumann ended up, methinks.... Oh, genius playing though! I think it needs the pace you have here, for what it's worth....
Bravo, brilliant performance as usual Valentina!!! I am very much wondering how hard was it for you to play this, especially (and almost exclusively) because of the repeated notes on the right hand all throughout the piece. I've tried to play it in the past and I found it makes me anxious because I cannot manage to play them at the right (fast) tempo. As for the rest of the piece, it's doable in comparison, I think.
Watching your hands on the video, hearing the sound but missing the vibe. Definitely need the LP version. Your playing is too fast and accurate for the sampling rate chosen for the digital version. Just like some pianos you play can't keep up with your fingers.
@ValentinaLisitsa I can't wait! Actually the lights which are a bit dim create a misterious mood which is perfect for the Erlking! (And it's always good to do it for sound, because a good pianist can fill the darkness with the light of music ;))
@FLOUHTV2 Wait until I get real sound - not from monitor but from the recording ! Sorry that video didn't turn to be as "glamorous" as always - we had two overhead lamps blown while recording . You can see that the best spotlight was IN FRONT of piano. Of course, no question of moving piano into the spotlight. We do it for sound first and foremost .
I know im gonna play just like her.. I'd best start practicing

I wish I lived in England so I could see you at the Royal Albert! I think a 20 hour flight would be a bit excessive :)

@ValentinaLisitsa: Next summer I'll be in London for you and I think I should get a ticket while there are still available. Can you please give us a link to a trusted ticket-selling website?

@MihaiTheFirst just Google Royal Albert Hall. Select June 19 on the events calendar. Select Buy Now. You can even select your own seat. Very cool.

OK, I'm going to get hate mail for this. I loved it and you played it brilliantly. But now I can't get these recurring visions of Charlie Chaplin and the Keystone Cops out of my head :-)

how the heck do you memorize a piece like this!??!?!?! Or any of the incredibly long pieces you play.

Such a sad story, but beautiful music written for it. And beautifully performed! <3

OMG i love this piece, im currently learning it :D sooooo hard but such a nice piece to play, i also love the original operatic version composed to the poem, i love the countertenor David Dq Lee singing this piece. would you recommend it as a piece for me to play during my grade 8 exam????????
allthenamesrtook 1 month ago

MihaiTheFirst 1 month ago
@ValentinaLisitsa Play Erlkonig as part of a Schubert/Liszt set (no one can touch you in this repertory) to start recital. Then play Ave Maria as an encore (like a pleasant, but delayed echo) to bring audience full circle back to magical opening moments. They will go crazy after this, so prepare to play many more encores! I will forward you my "wish list" of encores later.

@ValentinaLisitsa With all the pieces you want to do at the royal albert hall.. it will be an all night concert :D
Still it is the very best hall in the UK ~~ once your done there, maybe you`ll tour the UK :D
UKchurchSDAmusic 1 month ago

I think it needs the pace you have here, for what it's worth....
strav12 1 month ago
Very nice Valentina! I'd love to see you play Beethoven's "Tempest".
physicalgenius 1 month ago
Bravo, brilliant performance as usual Valentina!!! I am very much wondering how hard was it for you to play this, especially (and almost exclusively) because of the repeated notes on the right hand all throughout the piece. I've tried to play it in the past and I found it makes me anxious because I cannot manage to play them at the right (fast) tempo. As for the rest of the piece, it's doable in comparison, I think.
romymistique 1 month ago
Watching your hands on the video, hearing the sound but missing the vibe. Definitely need the LP version. Your playing is too fast and accurate for the sampling rate chosen for the digital version. Just like some pianos you play can't keep up with your fingers.

@ValentinaLisitsa I can't wait! Actually the lights which are a bit dim create a misterious mood which is perfect for the Erlking! (And it's always good to do it for sound, because a good pianist can fill the darkness with the light of music ;))

@ValentinaLisitsa Your best recording of the Erlkönig!:)
FLOUHTV2 1 month ago
@FLOUHTV2 Wait until I get real sound - not from monitor but from the recording ! Sorry that video didn't turn to be as "glamorous" as always - we had two overhead lamps blown while recording . You can see that the best spotlight was IN FRONT of piano. Of course, no question of moving piano into the spotlight. We do it for sound first and foremost .
