Scottie was sleeping. Jamal was not yet considered a top player. The very next game they played Scottie was much more aggressive holding Jamal to poor %s while scoring over 30 in a triple double if memory serves. Still, remembering this game is what caused Pat Riley to trade for him during Don Nelson's fire sale. So the game made Mash a lot of money!
Just like players have off nights on offense sometimes great defenders have off nights on defense and this was one of them for Pippen. A lot players have bad nights on defense their whole careers and Mashburn is one of them players.
@CliveGains80s That's a good comparison. He went to my high school in the Bronx. He won a championship in his senior year with a bunch of role players. There were a few games above 500 but he basically carried them on his back as a Point/Power Forward. He was overweight then. That was before Pitino got a hold of him and increased his conditioning and he he shed about 40 lbs. He was the tallest and widest player but he'd handle the ball and call the plays. I never thought he'd reinvent his body.
The Mavs were so talented, they had Kidd, Jackson and Mashburn, makes me wonder why they kept missing the playoffs all the time? Selfish play? what exactly went wrong?
@TheBerginton Based on the fact that they needed overtime to win when two players combined for 88 points, Id guess they're problems were a mix of no depth, bad defence and bad teamwork
@stykkisholm This. The first season (94/95) with the Three J's they were 24th of 27 in points allowed, the next one 29th of 29. The fact that Mashburn almost missed out the whole 95/96 season and that Jackson and Kidd had differences didn't help either.
@TheBerginton They were only together two years. The three didn't seem to mesh well together. The Hornets are another team that could've been good if Larry Johnson didn't have the career-altering back injury and they had kept Alonzo.
Been looking for this game. I've wanted to see how Mash' school's the best defender ever. Pip had no chance in the post. I bet however he learned from this experience and became even a better post defender. But watching Jamal, Jackson and Jason together was a thing of beauty.
@destr0n Pippen did learn quick because the next game at Dallas (which was a week later) he made Mashburn's life a living hell and shut him down. You could tell Pippen took it personal. He had a mean streak in that game from the start. I've been begging AJ (the guy who runs Scottie33Pippen) to upload that game but for some reason he hasn't yet. It's one of Scottie's best games from '94-95. I know he has that game because he's used clips of it in Ultimate Defender Part II and Power and Grace.

Mashburn was so great to watch in college and I just wish he could have had more of a chance to shine in the NBA. One of the greatest of all-time.

I remember watching an espn clip where a sports analyst said Jamal Mashburn loved playing against scottie pippen and now I know why.

@BrutallyH0nest Didn't Pippen score like 37 pts at the end of 3 quarters then sat out? It was a blowout I believe.
destr0n 1 year ago
@destr0n Bulls 111-85 Mavs. Scottie has 36 in 29 minutes, so I guess you're right. Mashburn was held to 16 points (FG 5/15).

@BrutallyH0nest I know exactly what youre talking about. Matter of fact every time he played Mashburn he wasnt letting him breathe
