I never liked Dilinger, but Chris really did do some amazing shit with them. I love Coheed and Cambria, and they are an extremely talented group of people that write a really varied bunch of songs. Chris wasn't good for them though. As much as I love Chris, I'm glad he will be able to do his own thing now that he left Coheed. I will still follow him, but to have good ol' Josh back in Coheed just seems so chill and amazing. Like seeing an old friend.
Iistening to Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine just makes me miss Chris Pennie even more. Gil Sharone was decent, and Billy Rymer is okay but nobody will beat Chris.
Chris Pennie is a beast in coheed because he makes them a good mix of crazy technical while still being able to showcase Claudio's voice. Don't get me wrong I love me some crazy time signatures and all that protest, BTBAM, Dillinger sort of way, but good clean vocals kind of get lost in all of it. Protest the Hero does a pretty good job of keep them though.
@ironcross7793 Uh, he's still as good. It's a completely different genre, so he's playing something completely different. It's just a shame, really, that the work he's done with Coheed, thus far, doesn't showcase nor do his immense skill and ability any favors. That said, I enjoy Coheed and Cambria. And their guitarist was arrested for armed robbery. In a pharmacy. That is hilarious.
@lolnumbers Coheed's (Chris Pennie's) Guns of Summer is one of the most difficult songs to play in existence and definitely fully showcases his skills. Also, it was the bassist Mic Todd, not guitarist that was arrested. Still sucks as Todd is an incredible bassist.
@ConsumingFire39 couldn't disagree more there, just listened to that song and while the drumwork is awesome it absolutely does not fully showcase his skills. Didn't hear a single change of time signature in the whole track.
@tregarron1 I should not have said fully, but it does showcase a lot of them and he will probably have some more influence on that next album. He does a lot more with the songs live. Especially with the older ones.
@ConsumingFire39 I still don't agree, at all. Then again, I've never really liked what he's done with Coheed thus far, so I'm more than likely biased. It's droll, is what it is. I want Chris Pennie to do Chris Pennie shit, not pretty-good-Pennie shit.
chris is like a jedi master of drumming. he doesnt even break a sweat, just chills out and chews gum while playing intricate syncopated 7/16 patterns at like 180bpm or something. its ridiculous.
@MPrint666 I think Ben is Dillinger. And people always say that they're going mainstream and shit. Well Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants is pretty much a mainstream song but it has an insane riff and Greg's screams are there too. I think they're doing a great job showing the close-minded people this kind of music.
@MPrint666 Ben Weinman is, and has always been, the soul of Dillinger. Some people just can't accept that a decent artist has absolutely no interest in playing the same kind of music throughout their entire career.
@MPrint666 I listened to calculating infinity way before I heard any of the GP+ stuff, and preferred the latter. Can't say that I've heard a Dillinger album I didn't like.
Having Ben Weinman and Chris Pennie in the same band just wasn't fair to all other musicians in the world. They had to be split up for the sake of humanity.
@mjrupps Gotta love it towards the end, when he singles faster than some people can double. Sometimes I want to go to school for music when I see players like him.
@DrDazzleFTW He actually makes me wanna give drums up entirely after listening to songs like Jim Fear & Come To Daddy. Which part towards the end in particular?
I like that unlike most heavy metal/ death metal / thrash metal / (wat ever other metals there are) drummers Chris actually has TECHNIQUE a drummer with no tech wud have been exhausted or in a helluvalotta pain doin this.
Pennie was really built for Dillinger as after seeing him with Coheed, it loosk really easy for him; then again everything he does looks easy. If he prefers Coheed though then so be it : /
I dont get why some people hate/dislike coheed so much. Im not being all fan boy like some people can act, but in my opinion they are one of the best musicians out there. And if because of Claudio Sanchez's voice, I respect that you dont like it. But also respect that to sing at that range while playing the style of guitar that he plays takes a lot skill. Show respect for a great musicians as much as most fans respect your opinion on his singing. Peace, Love and all that Jazz :D
@JuanpiTheGunslinger for me its cause look at this video look at the talent Chris has. i dont hear it in C&C. i respect them cause it music but idc for them
People badmouth Coheed, not because they think they are bad, but because they are not that good. They are an above average band, but they have never struck me as anything more than that.
@JuanpiTheGunslinger part of being a musicain is not to just go out and play some far out technical thing to have everyone gasp at your technical ability. The goal is to play music that ppl enjoy, not to have ppl gasp at your ability. I like/respect Chris Pennie as a drummer, but every band he has been in is absolutely unlistenable to me.
the precision and feeling (groove) of chris pennie is amazing!! Guys can you go to my drum videos and give me some advice? Im just starting and i dont know how to improve other than practice :(
@defdet03 It basically gives the cymbal a bit of a dryer sound. Less wash, quicker decay, and slightly quieter, and more trashy, but it keeps the qualities of the finish e.g bright and cutting. I THINK.
@Shyardik He went to Coheed because him and Ben Weinman from Dillinger absolutely hated each other. They could never get on for some reason, Coheed was like a "way out" for him, still being able to drum professionally.
Oh Billy seems like a welcome addition. But nobody tops Chris in my eyes. He soared above the opposition. Gil did not get my adoration at all. Something about him I did not like.
I like Gil Sharone, I loved Ire Works, and I think it really showed some of his potential. But I agree, nothing tops Chris. Which I'm happy with, he went to my other all-time favourite band, Coheed and Cambria =D
