  • that would be funny to see a drum battle between Chris Pennie and Lars Ulrich

  • @sirile99 Battle? Lars would sit in the corner and beg for mercy while Chris destroys it. lol

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but is he doing all of this with a single kick pedal?

  • @TMMMB1 He uses it briefly at 0:13 I think?

  • Comment removed

  • my nose is broken

  • I know this is wishful thinking, but I'd LOVE to see what Chris & Tosin Abasi could come up with together...

  • @jeremynic0420 That would be amazing, or a drum duet with navene and chris.

  • I never liked Dilinger, but Chris really did do some amazing shit with them. I love Coheed and Cambria, and they are an extremely talented group of people that write a really varied bunch of songs. Chris wasn't good for them though. As much as I love Chris, I'm glad he will be able to do his own thing now that he left Coheed. I will still follow him, but to have good ol' Josh back in Coheed just seems so chill and amazing. Like seeing an old friend.

  • Iistening to Calculating Infinity and Miss Machine just makes me miss Chris Pennie even more. Gil Sharone was decent, and Billy Rymer is okay but nobody will beat Chris.

  • fastest single strokes eva

  • People don't hate Coheed, they just hate how much potential Chris is throwing away by being in Coheed instead of Dilinger

  • @explodingpimp This x100000

  • The ending is so random. lol

    Fuck, he's so fucking insane..

  • Chris Pennie is a beast in coheed because he makes them a good mix of crazy technical while still being able to showcase Claudio's voice. Don't get me wrong I love me some crazy time signatures and all that protest, BTBAM, Dillinger sort of way, but good clean vocals kind of get lost in all of it. Protest the Hero does a pretty good job of keep them though.

  • WASH THE TURTLE :D

  • I wanna see him in DEP someday again so bad. This is just my wish.

  • Absolute amazing technique. The snare/hihat parts around 0:20-0:30 or so is great, played so effortlessly with precision.

  • he's doing this all in a polo...win

  • This looks sped up...

  • @noconflictbanana Yeah, he's awesome, isn't he.

  • @noconflictbanana It's not...

  • @ConsumingFire39

Maybe thats cuz he is too much of a beast

  • Fuck, I wish he was still with Dillinger. He was so much better with them... I am not dissing Coheed, but he was a lot better with Dillinger.

  • @ironcross7793 Uh, he's still as good. It's a completely different genre, so he's playing something completely different. It's just a shame, really, that the work he's done with Coheed, thus far, doesn't showcase nor do his immense skill and ability any favors. That said, I enjoy Coheed and Cambria. And their guitarist was arrested for armed robbery. In a pharmacy. That is hilarious.

  • @lolnumbers Coheed's (Chris Pennie's) Guns of Summer is one of the most difficult songs to play in existence and definitely fully showcases his skills. Also, it was the bassist Mic Todd, not guitarist that was arrested. Still sucks as Todd is an incredible bassist.

  • @ConsumingFire39 couldn't disagree more there, just listened to that song and while the drumwork is awesome it absolutely does not fully showcase his skills. Didn't hear a single change of time signature in the whole track.

  • @tregarron1 I should not have said fully, but it does showcase a lot of them and he will probably have some more influence on that next album. He does a lot more with the songs live. Especially with the older ones.

  • @ConsumingFire39 I still don't agree, at all. Then again, I've never really liked what he's done with Coheed thus far, so I'm more than likely biased. It's droll, is what it is. I want Chris Pennie to do Chris Pennie shit, not pretty-good-Pennie shit.

  • @lolnumbers That groove in Guns of Summer is pretty sick and I don't know why anyone would think otherwise.

And no song is going to completely a showcase a drummer's abilities, that's not what songs or songwriting is for.

  • orgasm faces. ftw.:D

  • chris is like a jedi master of drumming. he doesnt even break a sweat, just chills out and chews gum while playing intricate syncopated 7/16 patterns at like 180bpm or something. its ridiculous.

  • this kind of musicianship makes me hate myself.... but I love it so much. BTW, just saw DEP and was the best show I've ever seen. Fucking insane.

  • what kind of ride cymbal is he using here?

  • this guy is ridiculouss

  • Comment removed

  • This made me tired watching it.

  • i really want to know what kind of ride he uses in this video..can anyone please tell me?

  • He has my ride!!! <3

  • Pennie is a genius. I can't listen to Dillenger anymore now that he's gone.

  • @sw0rd0fadvers1ty You're so right, Dimitri and Chris were Dillinger.

  • @MPrint666 I think Ben is Dillinger. And people always say that they're going mainstream and shit. Well Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants is pretty much a mainstream song but it has an insane riff and Greg's screams are there too. I think they're doing a great job showing the close-minded people this kind of music.

  • @MPrint666 Ben Weinman is, and has always been, the soul of Dillinger. Some people just can't accept that a decent artist has absolutely no interest in playing the same kind of music throughout their entire career.

  • @MPrint666 I listened to calculating infinity way before I heard any of the GP+ stuff, and preferred the latter. Can't say that I've heard a Dillinger album I didn't like.

  • I believe Pennie might be the most technically skilled drummer to ever live.

  • @Shabutie24 TRUTH.

  • @Shabutie24 Don't get me wrong i love Chris, but i gotta give that to Thomas Haake

  • @TheBigAP13 They're totally tied. Nobody can honestly say that either guy is "more technical" than the other. Equal god-status.

  • Chris Pennie > God

  • The guy could run laps around the drummer for Converge.

  • 1:01 is such a sick piece!

  • Why did he join Coheed, when dillinger is the SHIT?

  • @mynameismariusk Because Coheed needed a drummer just as good as Josh....so they got this machine.

  • reason why dillinger escape plan is the shit

  • Having Ben Weinman and Chris Pennie in the same band just wasn't fair to all other musicians in the world. They had to be split up for the sake of humanity.

  • There was no remorse \m/

  • he's doin some serious work, but is it just me or does this kit sound shitty as hell?

  • @jiminy54 probably just the camera mic

  • hes a frikkin machine :O !!

  • Adam Gray who?? lol

  • SICK

  • and he was eating chewing gum...

  • That right leg is a fucking machine gun.

  • @mjrupps Gotta love it towards the end, when he singles faster than some people can double. Sometimes I want to go to school for music when I see players like him.

  • @DrDazzleFTW He actually makes me wanna give drums up entirely after listening to songs like Jim Fear & Come To Daddy. Which part towards the end in particular?

  • he's a machine

  • I own the drumkit he's playing on now. Pretty sweeet.

  • he makes it look so easy.

  • jeeeeesssussssssss FUUUU-

  • Fuck

    Me

    In the

    Face

  • Chris is awesome. but I think Billy Rymer is really good for Dillinger. better in some ways.

  • @HeatDeafMeltedGrill True. It might an 'ego' thing. Who knows.

  • I can't decide who's better. This guy or Travis Orbin. If you don't know who Travis Orbin is, look him up.

  • @TheArtofLivingg Travis is the man! This guy is great too. Definitely too different to compare, I think.

  • I like that unlike most heavy metal/ death metal / thrash metal / (wat ever other metals there are) drummers Chris actually has TECHNIQUE a drummer with no tech wud have been exhausted or in a helluvalotta pain doin this.

  • @keepdrummin7 He's not a metal drummer, he's a drummer. He has no specific genre that he plays to because he is gifted in all areas.

  • Pennie was really built for Dillinger as after seeing him with Coheed, it loosk really easy for him; then again everything he does looks easy. If he prefers Coheed though then so be it : /

  • Kicking ass and chewing bubblegum

  • with Chris Pennie playing drums, it's ok to unconsciously have your mouth gaping with awe

  • How on earth do you go from this to coheed?

  • @DrumBum1244 hes probably making way more money in Coheed than if he stayed in DEP

  • @jessemidel ya he prob is. but his playin was better in DEP

  • I've always been jealous of 1:04. I've ALWAYS wanted to learn that beat.

  • douche

  • I dont get why some people hate/dislike coheed so much. Im not being all fan boy like some people can act, but in my opinion they are one of the best musicians out there. And if because of Claudio Sanchez's voice, I respect that you dont like it. But also respect that to sing at that range while playing the style of guitar that he plays takes a lot skill. Show respect for a great musicians as much as most fans respect your opinion on his singing. Peace, Love and all that Jazz :D

  • @JuanpiTheGunslinger for me its cause look at this video look at the talent Chris has. i dont hear it in C&C. i respect them cause it music but idc for them

  • @JuanpiTheGunslinger Exactly.

  • @JuanpiTheGunslinger

People badmouth Coheed, not because they think they are bad, but because they are not that good. They are an above average band, but they have never struck me as anything more than that.

  • @LikeAGlassAsterisk They have a wide spectrum of music and are one of the best live bands in the world.

They do not write anything they will not be able to play note-perfect live, but a lot of bands do try that.

  • @JuanpiTheGunslinger part of being a musicain is not to just go out and play some far out technical thing to have everyone gasp at your technical ability. The goal is to play music that ppl enjoy, not to have ppl gasp at your ability. I like/respect Chris Pennie as a drummer, but every band he has been in is absolutely unlistenable to me.

  • @rwoods2k The goal is to play music you enjoy. What is the point in pleasing everyone else if you're not happy yourself?

  • look up Guns Of Summer by Coheed and Cambria Chris lost his FUCKING mind in that song!!!!!!

  • Damn I wish I could play that beat in the intro. I can't even comprehend what he's doing!!!! XD

  • God damn!!!!!!!!!

  • gil was awesome. im not really sure what to think of billy. dont get me wrong, he's good but im not sure yet. chris was hella bad ass tho. still is.

  • @thedangermonty , Billy is good, I saw them at Warped. He's REALLY solid, he played everything correctly and added a few flares. Don't worry. :V

  • @ClipTheAmputechture

i saw them at warped too. such a good show

  • Mathcore is right!! Goodness!! Those are some sick sick time signatures for sure. He's so awesome!! I love him with Coheed as well.

  • the precision and feeling (groove) of chris pennie is amazing!! Guys can you go to my drum videos and give me some advice? Im just starting and i dont know how to improve other than practice :(

  • Okay I figured it out, after the pick-up it's:

    4/4, 6/4, 5/8, 4/4

  • Comment removed

  • Does anyone know the time signature of the beginning section and what rhythms he's playing on his left and right hands?

  • @Enigma02011 the beginning is in 4/4, it's just really syncopated

  • Nah man it's 4/4, 6/4, 5/8, 4/4.

  • I don't know what those numbers mean but I can still memorize this.

Do I get a gold star? lol

  • Well you don't need to know the time signatures to play it. I was just curious to know what they were.

  • Those are time signatures. I don't understand them but i memorized this to. We are winners. High Five :D

  • Comment removed

  • His comprehension of timing is just amazing

  • Brilliant!

  • @Shyardik so with you on that one :) but... can anyone tell me why the cymbal has holes in them and ive seen them before i just dont know why?

  • @defdet03 It basically gives the cymbal a bit of a dryer sound. Less wash, quicker decay, and slightly quieter, and more trashy, but it keeps the qualities of the finish e.g bright and cutting. I THINK.

  • @Mp5Drummer yeah that sounds like it :) thanks!

  • this guy makes me wish i learnt how to play drums. why he went to coheed and cambria i do not know.

  • @Shyardik He went to Coheed because him and Ben Weinman from Dillinger absolutely hated each other. They could never get on for some reason, Coheed was like a "way out" for him, still being able to drum professionally.

  • ....and now i know, lol. that's kind of unfortunate. didn't know him and ben couldn't get along.

  • Yeah and that's too damn bad because of all the shit Dillinger has gone through Chris still produced the best drums.

  • their new drummer is ok! From what we've seen on their latest single, "Farewell, Mona Lisa". Though it's nothing in comparison to what Chris does.

  • Oh Billy seems like a welcome addition. But nobody tops Chris in my eyes. He soared above the opposition. Gil did not get my adoration at all. Something about him I did not like.

  • I like Gil Sharone, I loved Ire Works, and I think it really showed some of his potential. But I agree, nothing tops Chris. Which I'm happy with, he went to my other all-time favourite band, Coheed and Cambria =D

  • I don't knowwhat it was about Gil.. I just wasn't feeling that he was feeling it.. you know? Haha. He just didn't feel right. But after spinning Option Paralysis a dozen times thus far I'd have to say Billy is a welcome companion on their chaotic ride.

  • @AgowTisro - too bad blowheed eats balls

  • @holyday888 Too bad no one cares.

  • @AgowTisro Nice response. I'm sorry you have to listen to Blowheed.

  • @holyday888 Don't be. I'm sorry you felt the need to make a pointless comment.

  • @AgowTisro It's kind of funny that you copy everything that I say.

  • @holyday888 Don't flatter yourself, mockery isn't my greatest feat.

  • @AgowTisro As much of a genius as you are, you aren't worth my time. Go bang claudio sanchez. Good day.

  • @holyday888 Eppure ancora lasciare un commento?

  • absolutely bitchin'

  • Dude the beggining is not that hard. What is hard is the linear beat with snare and ride. That Pattern is so odd!

  • The beginning is harder then that ride snare pattern. I could play it just by listening to it.

  • whoa...

  • This is probably one of the most musical drummers that plays in the metal and or /core scene.

  • How could you from writing drums like that to Coheed?

  • i dont like dlillinger but there is no denying this guy is fast

  • iv been trying to learn this intro for like an hour... ugh

  • ive been trying to learn it too. that time signature is so hard.

  • nah actually the intros all in four. a couple of parts in two

  • lol! Most idiots don't even know what time signature means.

  • this is true...

  • This a really true drummer!!!rsrs

  • damn! what kind of sabian crash is that? it sounds freaking terrific.

  • @Lalizalito i think its called an ozone crash i could be wrong but i think thats what it is

  • @Lalizalito The one on his right is an AAX, the one with the holes is an Ozone.

  • thanx dude.

  • dillinger asked a mate of mine to drum for them

he turned them down though cos he couldnt play that all the time

    understandable-he would die

    check him out covering lurch

  • link?

  • whos your friend?

  • @oyeizjaimito jay dickson :) he covers lurch on youtube :)

  • He is not of this earth.

  • the only problem I had with Miss Machine was that the durms seemed a little pushed to the back. They didnt sound this fuckin good, or audible. Still a great last album with Pennie though.

  • See I always loved Miss Machine. It;s so technical yet accessible. I hope they're new album lives up to what I'm expecting. I mean I miss Chris like anyone else, but Billy Rhymer seems to be filling in nicely.

  • Yeah I saw them last week and he lives upto their signature madness nicely. The new album will prove it better though.

  • New album?

    Dillinger?

    or are you meaning coheed..

  • Oh no my friend, I MEAN Dillinger! March 23rd. It's entitled "Option Paralysis". Ready Yourself. They said it's their longest album yet, clocking in at fourty three minutes haha.

  • !!!!!

What!! since when the fck was dillinger writing?

    haha... SWEET!!!

thank you man, made my day.

  • 2:08 oh my god! with one foot!

  • I wonder how he has his hi-hat and slave-pedal set up. His hats are so close to the snare that it seems it could only be a remote hat setup. Anybody know?

  • so funny how he doesn't look like a metal drummer let drum for the dillinger escape

  • What does a metal drummer look like?

  • well i mean he doesn't look like a stereotypically metal head cos like he wears like a polo shirt and also he's balding but no disrespect to him he is an amazing drummer

  • Dillinger Escape Plan doesn't play metal.

  • oh watever it doesn't matter ok

does this make it better? chris pennie doesn't look like ur stereotypical hardcore/mathcore drummer

    there happy know?

  • Yea dude, that's way better, hahaha. Spot on actually.

  • haha k :)

na i see where your coming from.

I guess many people would think the same, but ah well. not a bad thing,.

  • long hair? ahahah no, just kidding.

but what sanddybusum said wasn't wrong at all...

  • One would be lead to ask that after someone makes a dumbass statement like his haha.

  • Comment removed

  • Very slow NOT !

  • I snuck on stage at the warped tour a few years back and got to have a 5min 1on1 with chris...I am blessed. long live the Dillinger Escape Plan!

  • AND HE CAN CHEW GUM AT THE SAME TIME!!!

  • he said, when he do that he can better concentrate himself. sry for my english xD

  • I know several drummers who do it to count, I used to but I stopped chewing gum because I became a vegan and I just kicked the habit for health lol, I haven't found any vegan gum as of yet oh well.

  • @devilononeshoulder lol hes amazing

  • @devilononeshoulder Chewing gum is actually supposed to help.

  • @traveese087 true apparently it helps with concentration

  • @devilononeshoulder its his meternome
