  • This song is so hauntingly beautiful. I love it. <3

  • I love this song. The first time I listened to it, tears fell. I couldn't handle the amount of misery and love that were packed into one single beautiful piece of music.

  • This is definitely my favorite track on the album. I love when Colin sings, "But I pulled you, and I called you here. Didn't I?"

  • I didn't like this album, but I didn't hate it either. But I've really grown to love it.

  • When you find a man who would do this for you.....he is the one....

  • @trishseal lol... good luck.

  • @YesYouAreIgnorant

    But....I did! :) lol

  • This album is so painfully beautiful...

I can not listen to this song without fighting back tears, as I listen to William and Margaret drown, together, decidedly happy, their journey together ending.

  • Wow...beautiful.

  • Now, that i heared the whole album, i want to write an opera

  • This is one album that has to be listened to in whole to be fully appreciated. It was meant to be listened to that way. The whole album is magnificent in the way they carry musical themes throughout the whole album. Just wonderful.

  • he loves margaret

  • So yeah. This song pretty much always brings tears to my eyes.

  • Oh god, why do I do this to myself!? I always cry at this part, I just stop whatever I'm doing and start to cry...GAH.

  • Didn't I?

  • This song makes me cry every time. So incredibly written and there's so much emotion behind the lyrics. The Decemberists are truly talented to the core.

  • Simply Beautiful. It's hard to find songs with lyrics as amazing as this, the ability to tell such an emotional story through their music.

  • The switch to third person.. super subtle and super sad.

It’s not really random at all though.

  • Wait, what the hell is this? I come here to hear the most beautiful song I know, and all I see is two fools arguing about the definition of a simile? How is that relevant at all? It isn't. People need to calm down.

  • I had just gotten this CD. I knew nothing of the story, and I'd never looked up the lyrics. It played as I slept. When this song came on, it invaded my dreams, and they became the saddest dreams I'd ever had. I awoke with tears streaming from my eyes. That right there...is powerful music. Now I choke up every time the album reaches this point. Now that I know the story behind everything, I think the saddest thing is that this is the happiest ending William and Margaret could ever have together.

  • Is it just me, or is the brief and sudden swich to third person at 4:35 a bit odd.

  • @MrSilvUr maybe but that part honestly makes me cry..:(

  • A lot of people give this album a hard time, and while I can see how listening to individual tracks ruins it a bit, listening to it from beginning to end is an emotional roller coaster, far greater than a movie, far greater than any book, and this ending is absolutely tear jerking and every time I listen to it I feel finished.

Finished in the way that the story is over and it's perfect. Unlike movies where it ends and you feel it's still ongoing. It's just...finished and perfect.

  • Now that The King is Dead is out, I noticed: this last song on Hazards of Love sounds a lot (style/ vocals/ instrument wise) like the stuff on the new album. Almost like they were giving a taste of what was to come? Just something to think about.

  • @LTeal13 Funny you should say that. Colin Meloy actually eludes to that in an interview with Corey duBrowa

  • favorite

  • i am in love with the decemberists! i have this cd on my mp3 player and this is my fave somg on the whole cd! i know all the words to every song on this cd I dont care if these songs are about children being the hazards of love i love this album and will always love it i listen to the whole CD at least twice a day!

  • The greatest concept album written since Pink Floyd The Wall

  • @richymoore

    FUCK NO.

Nothing will ever come close, including this.

  • @Enemyofreali7y The Wall is hardly thier best.

  • @yonolanyo

Second best. Wish You were Here.

  • @Enemyofreali7y Agreed i love the 5 song hour and a half albums ie Wish You Were Here and Animals great for long drives

  • @richymoore what about Zen Arcade?

  • This is such a beautiful song, and when I scrolled down to look at comments similar to this...all I saw was fighting. Winning an arguement over youtube is like being the hottest star trek fan....You still have nothing going for you.

  • @TheEradicator13 & @DuffleMuffins

My god people both of you just stop. There is no need to be insulting. You've been fighting for 4 pages (maybe more I stopped looking) And don't try to Grammar Nazi me . I know mine is bad , but I'm not going to fight over it. This is ridiculous. I hope both of you are under the age of 17.

  • @lunathelunatic Hey I'm not the grammar nazi I was joking with him then he started grammar naziying me wrongly. I hate grammar nazis especially when their not even right about the stuff their saying.

  • Simile: The cats fur resembled a wet mop after it came in from the rain.

Not simile: When the sun came out it was like the sky was on fire.

  • @TheEradicator13 errrr ... other way round

  • @tintin9jack No one is using a simile without a "like", "as" or "than" the other is an example of using like as a conjunction. Their correct as they are labeled.

  • i'm sure Colin Meloy would LOVE this retarded banter XD

  • Amazing song. Lyrical genius :)

I am proud to be a 16 year old who hates all the stuff people my age like, like Justin Bieber (eugh) and Miley Cyrus (even more eugh) and be completely in love with the Decemberists, Damien Rice and the Beatles.

    DECEMBERISTS FTW!

  • @harrispud Everyone knows Justin Beiber is the kurt cobain of our generation stop trying to fight the power of his music.

  • @harrispud i was first introduced to The Decemberists when i was 15, watching the "Sixteen Military Wives" video. i was in love ever since...

  • Out of the frying pan and into the fire :/

  • These Hazards Of Love....Never More Will Trouble Us.

  • i could listen to this for ever and ever.

  • My boyfriend burned me this CD because he knew I really wanted it. I've listened to it so many times I've lost count, but the music is so beautiful, and the lyrics so ingenious I could never get tired of it.

  • @Treldman Don't use that word. It's offensive

  • @DuffleMuffins As are many others. And yet we still use them in this world.

  • @Treldman No, red neck bigots like YOU use them.

  • @DuffleMuffins stop being a little fag, dude.

  • @FuttBucker667 Homophobes... You have no excuse to hate someone unconditionaly.

  • @FuttBucker667 there is nothing wrong with gays. There IS something wrong with hating someone because of their sexual preference.

  • @DuffleMuffins i'm not a homophobe. show me someone who doesn't use the word faggot and i'll show you a liar. it's just a word, it's impact is only limited to how you choose to feel about it.

  • @FuttBucker667 Oh, I don't know, ME. I find it offensive that you would use the word "gay" or "fag" to mean something wrong, disgusting, or disturbing. What if I used the word "god" as an insult? How would that make anyone who followed a monotheistic religion feel?

  • @DuffleMuffins youre a liar.

you can be a little bitch and let small words ruin your whole day or you could grow a pair. i dont feel at all sorry for people who get all in a huff over someone saying the word "fag." no one cares about your delicate sensibilities, now get over it.

  • @FuttBucker667 I'm not a liar. How the hell would you know? Also, I never said it "ruined my whole day," and I'm definitely not freaking out unlike you. If you're so mature, then why do you even care about "my delicate sensibilities?" Why are you wasting your time insulting people on youtube? I'm sure you have better things to be doing!

  • @DuffleMuffins it's 3:00 am right now and i have to stay up all night so no, i don't having anything better to do. if i did i wouldn't be on the internet, would i? and when was my argument based on being mature? i said don't be a little faggy, dick lovin queen and to start treating words for what they are: just words. don't go around telling people not to say certain words because theyre offensive.

  • @FuttBucker667 You're the liar. You can't be homophobic, and claim otherwise. That would be like my saying, "Fuck god, fuck Jesus," and claiming to be christian.

  • @DuffleMuffins so i guess all those blacks who call themselves niggers and all the gays who call themselves fags are all self hating then, eh? good logic, sir

  • @FuttBucker667 LOL, I was hoping you wouldn't think of that! I guess that at this point, I'm just arguing for the sake of arguing itslef. I concede my point, you are not a homophobe :)

  • @DuffleMuffins or maybe your in love with jesus a little too much?

  • @TheEradicator13 I'm athiest...

  • @DuffleMuffins Awesome athiesm is the way to roll. internet high five!! I'm just suggesting that from you saying "That would be like my saying, "Fuck god, fuck Jesus," " that the person you are refering to actually wants to fuck jesus.

  • @TheEradicator13 Nah, its just that because most of the world is christian, I can safely assume that this would be the most effective simile.

  • @DuffleMuffins I know im saying that if someone says fuck jesus maybe he doesnt mean he hates jesus but just loves him in an extra special way ie) wants to stick his dick in him

  • @TheEradicator13 I'm straight...

  • @DuffleMuffins Your also an idiot.

  • @TheEradicator13 Blow me.

  • @DuffleMuffins I thought you were straight. Also this is the internet bud I'm not writing a paper I'm conversing in a casual manner. Plus I'm not like 13 or some shit wtf are you talking being homeschooled for? PPPS You don't know what a fucking simile is or how to spell so don't be talking about my understanding of the english language.

  • @TheEradicator13 You obviously don't have much understanding of the english language. BTW, a simile is a comparison between two unlike things, using the words "like" or "as." Ex: "The moon is like a ball of cheese."

  • @DuffleMuffins Yea no shit sherlock I know what a simile is. My point is you did not know what a simile is before you looked it up as is shown by your previous posts. Also similes don't require the use of like or as thats the little kiddie definition.

  • @TheEradicator13 Bullshit. BTW (again) I learned it school. Anyone with half a brain would realize that if I didn't know what it was, I wouldn't have used it CORRECTLY in a sentence (Sherlock).

  • @TheEradicator13 So how did use the word "simile" incorrectly? Its your logic that is flawed.

  • @DuffleMuffins First off your definition of a simile is wrong. Second you refer to something you said as a simile it is not. Thirdly where is my logic flawed everything I've said is obvious stuff. Easy way to tell if a comma belongs read the sentence aloud and whenever you see a comma stop count to 1 in you head and then continue if it does not flow the comma probably does not belong. You seem to just scatter commas through your text at random intervals I don't see any pattern to them.

  • @TheEradicator13 First, my definition of a simile is NOT wrong, second, the thing I refered to as a simile IS a simile, and third, It's fucking thanksgiving! Can't we stop arguing over nothing for ONE DAY?

  • @DuffleMuffins wrong, wrong, and stop being an idiot and I'll stop arguing. If you want to disregard with the truth fine your an idiot whatevs. You used like as a conjunction not to form a simile. Similes DO NOT require the use of like, as, or than. Similes are commonly taught as metaphors that use like or as this is wrong. A simile is a comparison between two things saying that they are similar in some way.

  • @TheEradicator13 Obviously thats a watered down definition btw. example: trees and bushes are pretty because they both have green. Is not a simile even though its saying two things are similar

  • @TheEradicator13 A simile is a comparison between two UNLIKE things (not a bush/tree) using the words "like" or "as." An example: "The moon is LIKE a ball of cheese." Because cheese and the moon are two UNLIKE things, and I compared them with the word "like," it is a simile. If I had said, "The moon IS a ball of cheese," then that would be a metaphor.

  • @DuffleMuffins Your definition is wrong you can stop repeating it. If you don't believe me the internet is only a google away. You seem to think you need to teach me English I know a lot more about English than you do you. By your definition this is not a simile "Superman is faster than a speeding bullet."

  • @TheEradicator13 "A simile is a figure of speech that indirectly compares two different things by employing the words "like", "as", or "than"."

I got that from the DICTIONARY app on my computer. I do admit that I missed "than," but I guyess I just forgot that one. An honest mistake.

  • @TheEradicator13 *guess*

  • Also, get a life! When you posted this, you should have been enjoying thanksgiving with friends/family!

  • @DuffleMuffins I like how you called bullshit on an easily verifiable fact, You use commas to frequently and haven't used one correctly yet.

  • @TheEradicator13 I, have, used, commas, correctly, frequently.

    :P

  • @TheEradicator13 Says the one who's spelling and grammar is atrocious. What, were you homeschooled by lobotomised gorillas?

  • Looooove The Decemberists forever, but this album was utter crap.

  • I hear a little bit of Pink Floyd in them.

  • @TheKenTerry I was thinking the same exact thing!

  • This is the song I'm dancing to at my wedding. However sad it may be, it makes up for it in beauty and the undertone of undying love. Gorgeous.

  • lovelovelovelovelovelove this song and this album!

  • Such a beatiful song.. I don't know if its happy or sad. They die, but they are together for eternity without the trouble of the hazards of love. The image of him asking the marry while they drown together is so wonderful.

  • I wish the story didn't have to end like this. So sad.

  • the best way to download this mp3 from youtube is to google mp3iiiiify.

  • what an awesome tune.....

  • Such a sad song :(

  • I can't believe I just cried while listening to this. I guess I'm a sucker for stories with "the existential 'no,'" where people choose to die in order to assert ownership of themselves. The book Persian Letters and the film The Passion of Joan of Arc (which is on youtube!) are two great examples of that.

  • a couple of songs kinda sound like bon jovie to me...

  • lovely band lovely song all so awesome

  • thank you so much for posting the whole thing.. simply an awesome album

  • My favourite bands are meshuggah, cynic and nine inch nails but this is still one of my fav songs atm. Btw Cynic's album 'traced in air' is surprisingly similar to 'Hazards of Love'. Well similar but still melodic Death Metal/jazz fusion... A comparison for only the bravest Musicnauts to pursue/comprehend...

  • @BroadwayRonMexico this music the hipster garabe i ever

  • @BroadwayRonMexico hipster garbage is the typical response of a dingbat listening to something they dont understand. Im all for not feeding the hipsters. But this stuff is brilliant. herp derp

  • unbelievable album, I swear they sound like zeppelin on certain songs, like the beginning of won't want for love

their song writing is a breathe of fresh air, it's inspired and extremely intelligent, I love their music, it's encroyable (incredible haha)

  • Indeed.

  • favorite song off the new album hands down. i really recommend buying this album and listening to it from start to finish instead of dling individual tracks because it's really meant to be enjoyed like a musical

  • agree :)

  • Agree with the musical thing. Its actually a cool story if u listen carefully to the lyrics. The story told reminds me of 'A midsummer nights dream'..

  • How??/ no one dies in AMND

  • Agreed! The hazards of love is definitely not a comedy.

  • @butitjustis so true

  • @butitjustis absolutely, the first time i listened all the way through i fell in love. this is a great album to have on ur ipod or mp3. and go out about ur day with this as a soundtrack. it makes everything seem better.

  • This song really does bring tears to my eyes. Heh

    Great musicians.

  • i love this so much!

  • i am so loving this song. but its soo sad!

  • This song is very beautiful.

  • This song makes me cry for some reason, It's magical.

  • Truly one of my new favorite bands, The Decemberists captured my attention while listening to WYEP in Pittsburgh. I found their music tranquilizing and it goes well with a Vicodin and headphones. I seen their show last month and was blown away, a must see band if your fortunate enough to have them come to your town. COME BACK TO PITTSBURGH SOON!

  • This song makes me get tears in my eyes. I weeped a bit when I saw them live.

  • I can't stop listening to this album. I've gone three weeks now listening to at least one of the songs every day.

  • Good song

  • I love this song. Kinda wish it didn't have the country twang/steel guitar sound to it, but the lyrics are so pretty.

  • I like the peddle steel tbh

  • Me too, can't judge its use by the way others use it.

  • I like the twang actually. There is so much variety in the songs on this album, but they transition so beautifully.

  • this song always makes me cry at the end :') i love it!!!! with all my heart!!

  • Seeing them in three days. I cannot WAIT! :D

  • everytime i hear this song after ive listened to the whole album (or should i say story) i cant help but crying. beautiful lyrics. its so very sad how they had to fight to be together and they finally are and then they die... its just not FAIR!!!!

  • I like to look at it as the story comes full circle. How? Margarette was pregnant with William's child and she too drowned with him in the Annan water.

But remember how William came to be? He was found by the Queen in the Annan water. ;)

  • They're coming here Friday and i couldn't be more thrilled that this tour will be my first experience seeing them live. What an entrance!

  • they are awesome! i just saw em a week (or two) ago in toronto. They played like 2 sets! its real grand to see the whole ensemble on stage with a zillion instruments. You'll have tons of fun

  • thanks for putting this album up. :) You should add the lyrics in the description or something.

  • I second the motion.

  • what a fantastic album, it just makes you wonder how much more amazing music could be if everyone worked as hard as these guys, and had the imaginative flair that Colin Meloy has.

  • my love now her love ..walked away to soon and his words promises no longer belong to me but reside within her heart

  • Im gunna level, I was crying while reading the lyrics. I wish I had a deeper philosophical statement to make but as soon as it said "But these hazards of love Never more will trouble us" I couldn't help but crying

  • Because the last Decemberist concert I went to was so bad I didn't get tickets to this years tour; now I'm really regretting it. My daughter saw them at Bonaroo and described it as the best concert she's ever seen period. Others I've talked to have said the same. This might go down as one of tours you talk of years from now- with regret or happy wonder depend on your circumstances.

  • This entire album (story) music is absolutely enthralling. They are unique in a world that too often is filled with crappy music.

  • I really hope they win indie album of the year. This is the most creative band I have heard since I could remember, even their early music is. They come up with story lines and the words they use to express them is like nothing I ever heard...beautiful

  • I think of Big Love whenever i listen to this song . . . i don't know why but I feel like they just fit together

  • This song is so beautiful. I tear up every time I listen to it. Colin has a way of channeling the character SO well, it's incredible.

  • One of the best love songs of all time. imo.

  • I want them to spend some time in the Hiawatha national forest in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and see what happens. Seriously.

  • this song is so beautiful, but has a sad ending. such a perfect mixture of drama and peace, if that makes sense.

  • I am not ashamed to admit that I almost cried when I first heard this song.

Although I probably should be ashamed.

  • Such an incredible song. I saw them live a few weeks ago and I think this was my favorite song of the night.

  • This is the best song....ever. Period, end of discussion.

  • agreed

  • i hate how they have to die in the end. good album. there amazoing....and im seeing them on wesday LOL xD [:

  • when you think about it, their dying was really the only way to end it

  • "These hazards of love, no more will trouble us." such a beautiful way to end it.

  • it's so strange, the end is both happy and sad

  • decemberists songs that reference boats or drowning or some combination of the two: you'll not feel the drowning summersong sons and daughters mariner's revenge song lost at sea eli, the barrow boy we both go down together the tain (part V) apology song (the bike drowns, kind of) oceanside billy liar any others? (and btw I love this band and album, im not bashing)
  • Read in an interview with Colin -- apparently moving to Portland brought out the salty sea chantey writer in him...

  • on the bus mall

    'our shoes were our showboats'

  • what a great story.

  • great closing song for great album

  • wow what a great band! And this song is one of the nicest sonds on the entire internet

  • reminds me a little of Pink Floyd...Maybe "Wish you were here" or something

  • naw.

  • Funny you should say that ... I was just strumming HoL4 and slipped right into Wish You Were Here. Different timing but similar progression, and the lyrics can work with each other on some level.

  • Best song on here

  • agreed. i could listen to it on repeat forever.

  • i love this song so much. there is so much emotion in the whole story and when it ggot to the marrige part of the song i literally blubbed! i love the whole album, its thier bets one yet

  • Song of the year . without a doubt.

  • im not sure about that.... there are some songs and albums yet to come out that i think might top this. but this is a bad ass song
