They couldn't have woken up in this position without being strapped on the bars they are holding(which they are not). So they either were forced to climb up there to avoid some other impending death trap or they were strapped before the scene is shown and they undid the strap somehow and then tried to knock each other off the bars. I don't know, mess up on the screenplay's part or script or whatever, it's really unexplainable.
