What the hell is the concept of this show? Don`t get me wrong, it`s highly entertaining and I love REG, but it makes no sense to me. I am Norwegian, btw.
@flescum The concept is basically there is a 'room' where things can be put and once they are there they cease to be. The contestants come on and try to get rid of the things they hate, the host just talks to them about it and occasionally says 'no'. It is done for entertainment so there's not necessarily any logic to their decisions.
The name comes from 1984 by George Orwell, in which there was a Room 101 where people would go and never come out, there they would be tortured and die.
"Grant is a good presenter on television. He has a manic enthusiasm and a winning capacity to think out loud; no sooner has a thought seen the light of consciousness than it has sprung from his mouth like a naked Nureyev." as stated by AA Gill. His shy slightly camp talent is always brilliant especially with his fake RADA accent. The Afrikaaners do brilliant posh accents - remember P K Van Der Bijl in Rhodesia.
@sadhustar i think in one interview he said that the crew actually put real alcohol to him in some of the scenes, so his performance got even more real.. though it was quite cruel by the crew :D
@UilleannPipesMaddes There was also a scene where his character drank lighter fluid and in order to get a good reaction from him the bottle was secretly filled with vinegar. You can tell he was surprised--he almost starts to laugh--but he somehow got on with the scene!
@UilleannPipesMaddes No, what happened was before they started filming, director Bruce Robinson made him get really drunk one night so he would have the experience to draw on for his performance. This may have been the first time he got properly drunk, but the thing is he's never said exactly what his allergic reaction to alcohol is (apart from being sick obviously)
@townsjim Reg's dad was an alcoholic who tried to shoot him when he poured his wine down the drain as a teenager. He's never been a drinker in part due to this, but says it makes him ill.I tend to think it's a psychosomatic reaction to the stress it caused him as a child in Swaziland.
@sadhustar He had never been drunk before the filming, so Bruce Robinson (the director/writer) forced him to go on a bender and be ridiculously hungover etc. He said it was the worst experience of his life
@sadhustar Director Bruce Robinson made him get drunk once as part of the research for the film. The incident is hilariously described in one of the interviews on the the 20th anniversary edition boxset of W&I.
@Aelliotb I personally like the original version more, even though some might find Nick Hancock a bit obnoxious I think he's funny. He's a bit more savage than Paul Merton, who I really like but find is more suited to being a regular panelist on HIGNFY than a host.

The wine-woman reminded me of someone, her looks, her manners, but I couldn't really tell, of whom. And then it hit me: Hugh Laurie in drag!

"If they want to get people up onto the floor, they put this BASTARD on!" Perfect Withnail moment there.
"Bastards! Just to suck on some miserable, cheap cigar and the bastards won't see me!"
"What happened to my agent? Bastard must have died!"
Love REG forever!

@sadhustar He got messed up in the wrap party for Withnail, I think . . . not a drinker.
Oh, and the lighter fluid he drank was vinegar and no-one told him for that take. I think.
