Incorrect. Not written by Peter Paul and Mary. Written as stated by the previous commenter, by Gordon Lightfoot in 1964 and performed by Peter Paul and Mary in 1966.
There is something both enduring and haunting in this song. Gordon Lightfoot did a great job in writing this song but I love Eva Cassidy's take on it. Her picking and vocals just melt together to form this beautiful expression of longing for home.
Next to Gord's, this is the best. It comes to a draw when I try and tally up the number of times I've listened to them both and I only started listening to Eva's version when I discovered it in the early 2000's. Gord's came out on his "Lightfoot" album in the mid sixties.
Actually, I know exactly where this picture was taken. It was at Chesapeake City, Maryland. I lived there and recognize the area behind her in the picture.
Eva was one of the biggest talents the world has lost and sadly before he became famous. I wished I had had the chance to meet her and listen to her lovely voice live. She lived in Maryland which got the perfect surrounding for her sounds!
Originally written by Gordon Lightfoot not Peter Paul & Mary. What more can be said about this song that hasn't already been said? Covered by the likes of Dylan and Presley, it was written in 1964, but Lightfoot drew upon an experience some six years earlier when he was studying music in Los Angeles in 1958 and he found himself at LAX one early morning, more than a little homesick.
@nlg516 Wrong, wrong, wrong. Please check google or the credits on albums and CDs. Peter, Paul & Mary didn't write more then one or two of their own songs. They were created by Albert Grossman to cover the songs of current singer/songwriters. They were a commercial venture he created to present softer versions of other musicians. They were great but they were not the creators of much of their music.
this song reminds me of me travelling in solist and going to the light at the end of the tunnel. a bright happy feeling...i love this song and love eva even more...
I think this hit for Gordon Lightfoot was initially a Peter Paul & mary song, their beautiful harmonies yet another great take on this song, worth listening to. If you like Gordon lightfoot's version, you may also like Ronnie Hawkins, of the Hawks (later, The Band) or even smooth Jerry Reed versions. The Kingston Trio is yet another take on this great tune. They are all great takes on a great song, with slightly different feel, worth exploring :)
@anthonythirteen In all the comments I have ever read about Eva, you nailed it. I've been a professional musician for over 40 years and I've never seen her equal. ANYWHERE, EVER!
"And I'd like to point out that it's easy to overlook, because of her beautiful voice, that Eva Cassidy was one hell of a guitar player." -- I absolutely agree. I just discovered Eva today. It's almost 3 AM and I'm still listening. Her voice and phrasing are magnificent but she's also fantastic on the guitar.
Eva never shied away from doing covers. It isn't surprising to her fans that she frequently out performed the originals. She never came up short. She was truly a performer who could make any song her own.
This is one of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs and I must have played it a thousand times. Eva's take on the song is nothing like the original but still captures the sadness and loneliness of the lyrics. And I'd like to point out that it's easy to overlook, because of her beautiful voice, that Eva Cassidy was one hell of a guitar player.
@javadude54 yeah her guitar playing is extraordinary you hear it playing but it never overshadows her voice it completes her sound in away...just another part of her soul we get to enjoy.
I think Nancy Wilson of Heart (another great guitarists) would appericate her playing
Beautiful accompagnement to go with that beautiful voice .. my goodness, she's good.

It was originally written by Peter, Paul & Mary, not Gordon Lightfoot. This is my favorite rendition, though.

As the story goes, Lightfoot began writing songs on a bet with Bob Dylan. It launched a brilliant career.

Eva Cassidy is, seriously, one of the best musicians in the history of humanity.

Some say she didn't get the breaks in the music business because her mix of songs was too eclectic.
I prefer to think that she was too good for the music business...
