Not sure if I agree. The vantage point is VERY close to each other, but if you look at the two, there is a difference. Also there have been commercially release versions of this race (eg. "Fire and Rain" and it's not from that either.
@pajasa62 You're right, the vantage points are very close to each other but definately not the same shot. Makes me wonder what kind of camara this person was using. That's some good video for 1973.
I was thinking about that myself...It almost seems too clear to be an 8mm camera (not that I'm an expert)
As Walther's car is coming to a rest, you see that little opening area at the track closest to the camera...each year, early on race day morning I walk out there to get alongside Gasoline Alley to see the drivers and the cars. It seems like each part of the Speedway has so much history associated with it.
What an awesome perspective! Just a shame about the lack of sound. That crowd where lucky a spark didn't get hold of that fuel that was being spat out like grass sprinkler! Would have been toasty time! If there ever was a race that was cursed I'm sure that would be the winner. The odd thing is this was the only guy that survived!
This is simply incredible. Not only does this, like minirod2007's footage of Geoffrey Bodine's Daytona Truck Series crash show us what really happened, but this video dates back to 1973! Thanks for sharing this awesome find!
wow, you don't realize just how close he was to getting killed until you see how many cars drove under his while it was spinning. very lucky he survived
This is not amateur. This video is from the original ABC broadcast of the race.

what camera did he used? that looks more than outstanding for a 1973 film, even if doesn't have sound it just looks incredible.

0:20 there's a creek running right under the track! And no wall in front of it!

Awesome find! This is without doubt one of the worst crashes ever. I ranked it as the 15th worst, just behind Ryan Briscoe's crash at Chicagoland
