Dave i have really enjoyed your video's and appreciate your sharing your out door skills with us . i have alot of indoor skills ive been a remodeling carpenter for 16 years and set alot of stone and tile. if you need some advice on home repairs or improvements i would be happy to share.
Haha Dave, call me ill give you some tips if you want, i've done it a few times, back when me and my dad did construction. But you did a great job for not having done it before
Dosent matter how you get the grout in there but you may want to wait 3-5 days and put a sealer on there. It will help the grout stay cleaner longer. Great job.
liquid nail not a good idea where high heat is present also the grout should be a little thicker and a grout float should be used to get gout in to grout lines
Dave when grouting your tile you could just pour the grout out of your cup or jar. its not in the directions on the grout bag/bucket but you mix the material with a touch more water then you would think, then it will pour out like cold pancake syrup. Great job!!
Some folk have all the fun!! It looks great. I am sure the tile radiates and hold heat as well. We are getting all that rain you had, should be with us all week. Enjoy your videos and for sharing with us. - Andy
old school wood stove and the new wall look great im gonna guess the wall was a better heat reflector? home decor is a weak point of mine so i could be way off
We couldn't believe how well that stove reflected heat last night.. we only had small coals in the stove at 11 PM.. Maybe a total of a large pan full. It was so hot in the room house that it was crazy. Outside it was raining.. and right at 38 degrees. We should have done this 2 years ago!
This may not have anything to do with Bushcraft specifically, but as you said, it has to do with self reliance.
There is a large number of bushcrafters that are so seriously into it because it is just that, learning how to be self reliant. So that if society crumbled, or whatever, you would be able to scratch out a good living for yourself and not have to reinvent the wheel...so to speak
Since we don't do much of this we probably wouldn't put the finances into the tool... How we did it seemed to work well, although it might have taken a wee bit longer.. but what else are you going to do on a wet Monday afternoon? :)
Thanks again for all of the kind comments! We appreciate you all..
You can get a basic grout float for about $10 at home depot, lowes etc, so if you were doing a larger job like say a tub surround or backsplash it really does not add that much as a percentage of the materials cost of the job. For jobs like those with narrow grout lines it really is a lot more practical than the putty knife method, and gives a well packed (free of voids) and nicely tooled joint. Anyways good job and weel done for taking on a new challenge
Dave great video. So many people are going to be installing wood stoves or wood pellet stoves this time of year and I think it is nice to have someone show some thing that will help them and make the install safer.
I really like your woodstove. It looks nice. I have a small homemade wood stove that gets hot quick and does great for sitting in the basement and heating the upstairs as well. Great job on the work. It is great to accomplish something without relying or spending big bucks to have someone else do it.
Yup, had to move my stove this summer, and extend the tile floor area... to meet the whim of some insurance idiot thousands of miles away. (2 inches too close to wall)
The next time try using a rubber floating trowel. Just dump the grout on the tile and spread in all the joints with the trowel. When you are done use a sponge to wipe up the excess. Have a bucket of water handy to rinse your sponge. after wiping up the excess, let it haze over and buff it with a clean cloth.
I guess I am lost on how grout and tile has anything to do with Bush craft, But..... To each, his own. I hope, next time, the video will be about Bush craft of some sort
I understand Jack.. he is good folk. We have become "known" if you would for our Bushcraft videos.. But there is also the self reliance aspect to living in the bush..
One of the things I personally learned doing this was thinking outside the box. How to do it with what I had available. That helps my Bushcraft as well.
Applying grout to floor tiles is usealy done with a grout float (float with rubber sponge pad); basicaly you spread it all over the surface while pushing the grout into the joints holding the float at a slight angle, then scrape the excess grout off with the side edge of the float. After about 15-20mins u need to use a damp sponge that is frequently rinced to remove the remaining grout off the tiles and after this clear the haze with a paper towel.. Good job anyway
This is the first time that we have ever done it.. and it was actually kind of fun. Tam did a terrific job with the grout.. and I think that was the hard part.
The video doesn't do it justice.. It is gorgeous (If I might say so myself) We plan to put some trim up later.. and some gold splashboard where the chimney goes out through the wall.

ok
i think that anything in like relates to bushcraft
when i work on a car i try and look at tools diffrentley then the avrage joe, and if im doing a job like this one i do as well
like daves sling bow how he looked at it in a diffrent way and said HEY i can shoot arrows with that thing
besides a job like this helps your building skills, witch relates to shelter building
